I think that's why he likes characters like Byleth and Marth who have tippers. His spacing is pretty immaculate and those characters become real demons if you're consistently hitting the sweet spot

@@Kiba114 you sure? Byleth has a pretty good tether and joker his tether recovery is also very good. Even Ivy has an alright tether with some recovery mix ups. Sure some moves can counter tethers but they aren’t as bad as people are claiming it to be

First of all the glytch advertisement was funny, second of all I've been saying Byleth is great for the longest time and nobody believed me, I'm so glad that it isn't the case now. *MK B META*
Same, when I saw people comment stuff like “he’s slow so he must be a bad character” I was like ‘You fail to mention the busted option coverage he’s going to have’.
I immediately thought he was going to be a high-tier, when I saw his kit.

@@eaa1338 Ultimate is so well balanced that a character like Byleth can be excellent in a vacuum at the same time as being average compared to the rest of the cast. (Almost) every character in the game is very good, so I think tier systems don't really work the same way in Ultimate as in other games; you could stick 40 characters into high tier, and it'd be reasonable.
@@HaileyTheThird I can understand that but I just think that people sometimes underrate characters just because their slow while they also have really good strengths like in this case massive range, good damage, decent combo game, decent recovery and much more.

Byleth just is so much of a Leo character. Feels like watching his sm4sh Marth all over again. So maybe Byleth is actually good? He feels better than Lucina with how consistent he can be but he has actual damage output unlike Lucina
Try actually playing Lucina and Byleth right after each other. The great movement Lucina has in comparison to the dreadful movement of Byleth makes a huge difference in neutral, advantage, disadvantage, and edgeguarding. Basically everything, but that should be obvious. Lucina actually has similar damage output to Byleth, as both don't have particularly high damaging true combos, and rely on continuing pressure for big damage. Byleth is much more focused on tech chases, but Lucina does more juggling while still having great tech chases again thanks to the movement. Ask Leo which character is better and he'll probably still say Lucina
With that being said, Byleth has decisively better kill power, which is obviously a fantastic upside. And Leo just has more fun with Byleth, so he makes it work

@@kaymakesthings His example was extreme, but I think the main point is that some people have started overrating Byleth after Leo won Riptide. Some people (not all) have started talking about all his advantages while suddenly ignoring all of his disadvantages. Byleth's recovery may be good, but getting out the corner/ledge is a pain. The recovery while good is still exploitable (watch epic gabriel's set against Leo for this. The set should be on Larry's twitch (his first Riptide stream at 47:30). Leo struggling at the ledge was shown even at the Maister set (watch it unedited). Low air speed also means it's hard for Byleth to land (gets juggled easily as a result.
I still think he's high tier, but people are talking as if Tweek lost because it was a losing matchup (someone literally told me Tweek's banana stopped working cuz Leo was spamming Nair). Some people are also talking about how Byleth's range means literally every fighter that's primarily melee-focused loses to Byleth. There's also the take that Sephiroth easily loses to Byleth after that one game with Tweek.

About Byleth's recovery being exploitable. No it is not unless you have someone with a lot of range and interrupt the up B from the sides. If you try to spike him, he spikes you back with his Up B as we have seen Leo do all the time. Then when you are near the ledge you can almost safely spam side B as a get away from the ledge tool.
Byleth vs Seph: this one is pretty simple. Sephiroth has a littlr bit more of range than Byleth but the amount of starting and ending las he has is astronomical so even if you have more range and try to space correctly, Byleth is winning most of the trades in the air and on the ground because he is faster. The thing with Seph is to take advantage of his range, what good is his range if lets say Byleth and seph jump at the same time to use F.air, both srr on hit range and they use F.air. who'd you think will win that trade? BYLETH. So let us add the fact seoh csn only take some his before he dies while Byleth can resist some punishment.
At the end of the day Byleth is basically a better Sephiroth. He has mlre forgiving tippers which adds up for consistency, he can fight back top tier Aegis players with his tools not because "it is leo". He can consistently kill with back airs and F.airs, has a respectable range,upB conversion that gets you to 50%. The list goes on. Does Seoh has that? No. Seph is not even like Ike where he does the 1-2 conversion. Seph is morr alike to shulk minus the speed and good frame data. Since seph tipper hitbox are not thst forgiving you see light charscters living up to 120% and above while Seph is in his "almighty" winged mode. So scary

Byleth is an honest character, only good range, kill power/options and functional moves.
I still think Byleth is high mid tier. People have little lan matchup experience because the only people who really play Byleth are Leo and Ryuga, and we haven't seen much from Ryuga. Leo went Byleth in one major game before the 18 month pause from major lan tournaments and switched to mainly Byleth online, where Byleth is far better. Yes, Leo won Riptide with Byleth, but you have to remember that so few people actually know how to play against Byleth with the lack of top player representation other than Leo and the extremely small number of tournaments where she's been playable. Same can even be argued for Terry, but to a much smaller degree. I still think Byleth is on the upper end of mid tier as of now. After a few more tournaments, that may change based on performance.
Does Byleth's landing Nair always seem to shield poke or is it just me? Or are they releasing shield before the landing hit box? Either way it's such a good move

I think the community forcefully wants Byleth to be a mid tier or high low tier at best. If Byleth wins it's because of Leo. The reality is Byleth can potentially be a top tier,.but people refuses to see it that way. You have characters like wolf and Lucina sitting at the top tier charts and these characters haven't won tournaments since forever and their tournsment performanced have been ok at best. Right now Byleth is a better Sephiroth with a little less range, waay less lag, a more forgiving tipper mechanics and a lot of conversions such as nair to dash attack.

If anything byleth winning isn't just a testament to how good Leo is, but how relatively balanced ultimate CAN be. If the player is good enough, they can win with tons of different characters.

@@happyducky9872 I'm kind of a hater on pyra/mythra, but I just think it's hilarious that so many top players say they're amazing, were already sewing amazing results from Leo, Spargo, and Cosmos with them, and yet random nobody casual smash players online protest so adamantly that they're not good. It's foolish IMO.
If you think about it, especially with competitive smash, all you want to play for is taking the stock. (You may think it sounds obvious, but at that level of play, it's deeper than you think.) Mythra is called the neutral monster for obvious reasons, and even she CAN kill with all her smash attacks and neutral b. But if you think she struggles, you can switch to pyra, who can kill with almost every single move.
No one who knows anything about the game would put them in anything less than top 10. The #1 player in the world puts them in top 3, and says maybe #1. But ahh yes, online trolls certainly know better, right?

leo is an amazing player, but i think people really underrate byleth. i honestly cannot see her being a tier below ike (high tier), given her range, knockback, damage, frame data (she struggles more from ending lag than she does from start-up lag, but her range compensates for this), oos options, etc. she’s also an obscure character with only one top rep, so no one knows the mu.
She's so insanely high tier. People call her mid tier after killing a heavy at 70 with the safest back air in the game and it's just weird

I still think Byleth is mid tier, however they're much better than most people gave them credit. I think what's mainly carrying the character is Leo being an absolutely amazing player that can adapt, and the lack of match familiarity. In the first match against Maister he got that up b on the side platform and killed him with an up air, and you'll notice for the rest of the set Maister was always ready to di the move and I don't think he got hit with an attack after up b again after that point. The character definitely has some things that not one really expected, like their crazy ability on the ledge with side b and up b, but they also lack things like decent out of shield options and speed.
When Leo was initially playing Ike, I think people started to overrate the character a bit simply because Leo was getting great results with the character, but it was never the character, it was Leo. Not to say Ike's a bad character by any means, I just think Leo's showings in tournament play really pushed the character up tier lists when it was more Leo if anything.

When will people stop talking about ike and realize two things. 1. Ike was the easiest character to play at a time where no one knew how to play the game. Theres a huge difference from a character being good at the first month of the game then falling off later. Than a character doing good this late into the meta. Also Maister got hit almost everytime single time after up b game idk where you saw that he didnt. Leo baird him multiple times from up b

@@Thomas-nz4si My guy Byleth is not mid tier. Byleth's nair out of shield is a great out of shield option so I'm not even sure what you're talking about. I guess people like you just need more convincing despite him winning a major and super major with a "mid tier character". Here's what people like you need to understand, great players like Mkleo don't reduce frames on a characters moves or increases hitbox sizes.....they don't change the characters frame data by using them, they just show people the potential of that character. So going off that, Byleth possess a arsenal that a mid tier doesn't have. If you don't see the strength of Byleth by now then it just means you don't understand the game well enough. Byleth has a great out shield option, air to airs, side b burst option, high shield break potential, sharking potential, anti airs, air frame traps, easy kill confirms, off stage fighting, a strong neutral B with mix up potential, a great recovery that counters safe edge guarding, edge defense with up B, side b and neutral B mix up at the ledge, a kill throw, kill tilts, a dash attack that kills, tech chase mix ups.
@@dripfoe_3307 I wouldn't exactly call their side b a good burst option, its active on frame 21. A good burst option shouldn't be more than like 15 frames. Anything at about 20 frames is considered reactable. Not all opponents are going to be able to react to a side b, but at the top level they likely can unless Leo does it strategically like he did underneath a platform I remember and caught the opponent off guard, but generally you don't see him us it as a burst option. Her burst option is often either just nair or dash attack.
I understood from the start that nair is a good oos option, but that's not enough to make her oos options good. Nair is seemingly the only oos option to my knowledge other than just grabbing or maybe up smash in some cases but I don't think I've seen him do that, and because of her slow ground speed she can't drop speed and run away in the instance that nair wouldn't hit, and often it won't because its not like it has amazing range and a good player should be spacing their aerials on shield. Its a great move but objectively it just doesn't have the range a lot of great oos aerials have.
Something incredibly important as far as the meta is concerned in this game is that the actual ability of characters across the board are much more balanced than previous titles. You can obviously win majors and supermajors with worse characters in this game, not only because even mid tier characters are viable, but also because generally Ultimate is a neutral heavy kind of game, and if you're neutral game is on point you can make most characters work so long as they are absolute trash characters. Hell, a Piranha Plant main won a major in Japan, and I don't see anyone arguing that the character is even mid tier. Something that objectively does set apart characters that are top/high tier from the rest of the cast is their speed, whether is be typically ground and air speed or their actual frame data, so while Peach is a relatively slow character, she makes it for it with fast frame data and a ridiculous punish game. This is just something that Byleth overall lacks and has absolutely nothing to compensate for it. They definitely have quick moves like their tilts, dash attack, and aerials, but their aerials need to be spaced and other than down tilt I don't think their tilts really lead to any combos.
I'm not saying I think Byleth is a bad character, mid tier isn't bad in this game, what I'm saying is that MkLeo is fucking insane at this game. There are obviously many factors going into this, such as how I said that most people have basically no experience fighting Byleth and generally Leo's ability to adapt to any given player or character, learning their habits and understanding the optimal strategy that his opponents are likely to do. I would say from what I can tell she's upper mid tier, and I think once all the hype over Leo's Byleth dies down most people will agree.

edit: I forgot to mention that people are also generally pretty rusty at the moment due to not playing offline Smash in tournament in so long. Leo is clearly rusty as well, but I would imagine once everyone starts to derust they'll likely give his Byleth more trouble. Considering its Leo, I'd be surprised if he got below 3rd or 4th at a major due to his insane ability to adapt, but I think we'll see more and more close sets from top players. I feel like if he goes Byleth against someone like Marss, Marss will actually have a pretty good chance at beating him. Not that I don't think Marss wouldn't normally be able to beat him, he's done it before, but I think Leo's chances or beating Marss go down a bit if he's using Byleth over Aegis or Joker.
@@Thomas-nz4si What is "the combo" exactly? Side b is a read on committal, where frame 21 is actually unable to be dealt with. You're right it's not a standard burst. Nair is not the only OOS - up b is just as fast and there's a ton of times leo does nair when he should up b (covers crossup and pancakes better). You don't need a true punish to do mix anyways. This further proves my point that Tweek is a very momentum heavy Player, and the moment it gets interrupted he crumbles
it showed in last EVO, it showed in the last tourney Tweek won and it shows here.
While i like Tweek, this momentum heavy dependence is going to be his downfall once he gets figured out
I mean, Tweek had a ton of momentum going into Winners Finals as he'd only dropped 1 game whereas Leo had dropped about 5 games or so. If you're talking about each individual set, Tweek lost game 1 to Sparg0 and still managed to win the set in dominant fashion. So he's only 'momentum based' when it comes to facing Leo.
Diddy being kept out by range and not being able to gimp recoveries played a huge roll in him losing. His only options to get in were banana and monkey flip- and Leo was already focusing banana control so.
But 2 of those 5 games was when he went Aegis

Byleth doesn’t have the best frame data but the range it has( yes I’m calling byleth it cause it’s both male and female) is just amazing so if u can rlly play neutral it’s amazing cause he can force jumps and then up-b to get lots of damage also pretty good offstage I think it’s high tier (lower end) cause it doesn’t have lots of weaknesses but my opinion can be easily changed

It’s not even that everyone else is bad, it’s just that Leo is so damn good. As a player who specializes in midrange zoning, mind games, and adaptation, this is probably the perfect character for him.

Byleth is nowhere near trash. Especially if they can do this to Tweek’s diddy , Maister’s game and watch, Spargo’s Pythra. A trash character, even in the hands of the best player, will lose to top tier characters in top 10 player’s hands

It's a lot more about the player than the character. If a character performs well, it's more a show of the player's skill than the character's utility.
Guys let’s look at how the other top 15-25 characters in this game play ( joker, Pika, aegis, fox, wolf, wario, game and watch, mario, zero suit Samus, Roy, peach etc) and then compare them to byleth and it’s not even close. Leo is a god at the game but cmon byleth is not that good of character. There is a reason that litreally no other pros play her. High mid tier at best lmao
Sure, has a lot of safe tipers, good OoS, the best tether recovery in the game and can kill a heavy with a bair at 70%.... Look, if Ike is high tier then Byleth is def high tier.
I mean, Pika doesn't have much representation either. I don't think anyone is making the argument Byleth is Top tier, its pretty much high tier that a lot of people are underrating them as Mid tiers. They're definitely Top 40, however lots of people put them under Top 60 so their more underrated imo.

Hot take: Game and Watch is a garbage overrated character in this game just like he was in Smash 4 and Brawl. He has one top tier gimmick which on any real character would be an issue but he fundamentally lacks a kit outside of up-B.
Game and watch does have a good set of disjoints in his kid (nair, bair, dair, ftilt, upsmash etc) so his combos are really consistent but closing out stocks with him could be rough if ur opponent plays safe and they dont commit to anything risky at high percent. I thinks he’s overrated as well, but definitely not garbo imo
