@@patrickrfears nah man. Best Breakout album for that era...definitely the best. But AFIs best, most authentic, real raw album will always be Black Sails in the Sunset. That was the 1st album to showcase Dave's talent for melodies and the band was just so much more broad in their rhythms, speed, and soft undertones. The perfect blend that they would soon use to propel them into mainstream acknowledgement.
It's one of the few albums that I can listen to start to finish and feel like it was necessary to do so :) It's a cohesive ride instead of just a random assortment of songs, IMO!
My niece has that Japanese hair straightening treatment Davey mentioned here. I have something to admit. As a late teen, my daughter listened to AFI all the time. I thought they were so noisy, LOL. I took her and her sister (who just came for the ride :))) to AFI concerts in NJ. Took them to see them, and also Good Charlotte. Davey passed right in front of my nose coming out to the stage in one concert (smaller place in NJ). The songs grew on me and now I have to say, I do like The Girl's Not Grey, Miss Murder, Dancing on Sunday(?), and Silver and Cold. My oldest also played the guitar to them, and so I have to say, now that she's on her own and so is her sister, I have empty nest syndrome and miss the songs being played at home. I didnt appreciate it when she played the songs so loudly, but I do appreciate them now after retirement. :)
Black sails is one of the most underrated, innovative, albums in 30 years. The band was dark, fast, tight, and had a completely unique sound on that album.
AOD was a great album. Perfect segway from Black Sails. I almost am tempted to say that AOD was their last album that represented their east bay hardcore roots. STS was more dark and less inquiring in that darkness than AOD...but you could feel the changes from their earlier ear bleeding past, throughout Art of Drowning. JMO of course lol
It's so interesting hearing where the sound for Sing the Sorrow came from - that it was what they wanted to make but didn't really have the proper tools to achieve. I remember my ex LOATHED that album and claimed it was because afi "sold out" when in reality it was the resources they had available that allowed them to finally bring that album to life.
Black Sails…, The Art of Drowning, Sing the Sorrow, the All Hallows’ EP, even December Underground are in my opinion the best records from AFI. I think that is the sound most fans associate with the band as well. I’ve heard some of the new music and for me, it doesn’t sound like AFI. At least not the AFI I saw headline hardcore day at Krazyfest all those years ago. Imagine me, an ignorant hardcore kid, not knowing who AFI was, standing right next to Davey, making fun of his attire to my friends. I was shut down by one of them saying “That’s Davey Havok. Vocalist for AFI. They’re headlining tonight.” I was confused. I stayed to see why a “punk” band was playing on hardcore day. I’m glad I did. That night changed my life. I’d never seen hardcore kids, metal kids, punk kids, together dancing, at the same time. The performance was stellar. Had literal chills. I’ve felt bad ever since. First, I was wrong for even judging him based on how he dressed. Sorry Davey. Second, I was wrong for assuming the band was purely a punk band (I wasn’t a fan of punk music). No, AFI had a little something for everyone. That was 20 years ago and that night is still forever embedded in my memory. I’ve seen the band perform a few times since then, a couple fest and once in a very small venue that was so hot condensation was forming on the walls and ceiling. Sorry for the story comment. Perhaps I’m just caught up in nostalgia. I wish Davey and the rest of AFI the very best. Stay safe XXX
I'm watching this at 3 in the morning and everyone in my house is asleep and I just lost my shit at Davey deadpanning "We started when I was two". A MOOD, DAVEY. JFC.
Same, its the greatest afi album by far for me. Shut your mouth, black sails and art of drowning are the holy trilogy for me. Sing the sorrow is really great too as is very proud of ya..
In 2002 was when first fell in love with them when hearing their hardcore shut your mouth and open your eyes album and then learning of their other works before and after.
I love how Davey talks a bit about The Art of Drowning in this interview, super kool to hear him talk about it in modern day as there aren't too many interviews out there from the time period. Also - I thought it was pretty rad when Davey called out the interviewer when he said the first 5 albums sounded the same LOL Actually no they don't, their quite different, especially BSITS & AOD - well said davey!
Rolling Stone are posers and this guys no exception, Close your mouth and open your eyes is AGGRESSIVE as hell and does not sound like very proud of ya or answer that and stay fashionable.
It really is incredible to see the evolution of AFI over the years. Probably one of the most unique band evolutions I’ve ever heard. Starting off as pretty straightforward Hardcore Punk for the first few albums, then getting more into the Horror Punk genre on Black Sails and The Art Of Drowning, then pretty much becoming an entirely different band on Sing The Sorrow which went for a more theatrical and operatic approach very influenced by the Emo and Post-Hardcore scene while still maintaining their Punk roots. Decemberunderground went for a very similar feel, but it also added elements of Goth Rock and Electronic Rock into their sound before going full Alt Rock and Goth Rock with maybe a very small dash of Pop Punk on Crash Love. Ever since Burials though, they’ve fully committed to the Goth Rock and Post-Punk sound with Burials being the heaviest album they ever made with elements of Post-Hardcore thrown in and hell, I’d even say that album goes almost full Metal in places. The Blood Album was pretty much just standard Goth Rock and Post-Punk...and honestly just kind of a boring album NGL. I wanted to like it way more than I did, but it’s the only album of theirs that gives me very little to talk about unfortunately and even if I do have some trouble with their first 3 albums, I at least remember those albums and they at least give me things to talk about. Bodies based off the singles I’ve heard so far sounds like what they were trying to do on The Blood Album but way more refined and way better produced, but there are small elements of a lot of their previous albums thrown in as well. I love AFI and I’m definitely looking forward to the new album. Definitely sounds like it’ll be a huge step up from The Blood Album so far.
Albums 4 5 and 6 are the pinnacles of rock music in my opinion. Highly polished melody-infused raw hardcore punk thats completely unique. Theres so much emotive expression in these albums, I never tire of listening to them.
The fact that you have 4 separate comments accruing 40+ likes in total is actually mind blowing to me. I've never seen this in almost 15 years of UA-cam honestly
Not surprising that they collaborated with Billy Corgan. If you listen to "Back into the Sun" off The Missing Man E.P., it has a very Smashing Pumpkins vibe. I love it.
Why does Davey make me piss my pants? Anyway... AFI are so good that it's seemingly destroyed my mind. I have experienced feelings that most, if not ALL people don't feel! I want to understand what these overwhelming feelings are !!! I've seen AFI 2 times and the 2nd time.. Davey stared into my eyes, mid song! I just can't explain... There's something... With energy and coincidences... REALLY WEIRD SHIT! DAVEY, if you read this, let me know, please! Cheers EVERYONE ☺️
I remember attending the Carnivores Tour in 2014 in Phoenix and when AFI opened and did their setlist, all the lyrics came back to me like (snaps fingers) and I felt like I was in middle school again. They definitely can put on a performance performance

Salut, Well, Davey.... You certainly know how to take control of an interview, he is not nearly as interesting as You though. Haha! Vivian Campbell was given the guitar spot with Def Leppard, previously he was guitarist for Dio.... some forget this, he is metal as they come. That was my era, freshman in high school in 1987, so yeah I lived it.... and my hair is nearly to my waist. Though, I remember getting perms put into the back lot of my do mid 80s. Ahhh.... but enough about me.... I am all ears, I hope there is another record forthcoming. Cheers Davey.... Blessings!
Fun fact Def leopard hated the term “heavy metal” they wanted nothing associated with that term. Because at the time The Nwobhm was taking over Britain and they hated it.
I’m not sure that is factual whatsoever. The only mention of them hating something is perhaps in the “Hysteria” film where Joe says he doesn’t want to be a punk band. If they hated heavy metal they sure did a great job being a heavy metal band.
@@trevorwilliamchurch it was an Iron Maiden documentary i was watching where the singer for def leopard was talking about how “heavy metal” would limit their commercial success, because they wanted to be a world wide band. Def leopard has some sick songs no doubt.
He’s giving bi. Though I feel like he hasn’t found that someone as committed to his type of lifestyle, which I feel is very high level expectations. No one worthy enough🥺
Hey Davey I twirl my hair just like that! It feels good between the joints of the fingers or the underneath the fingertips yeah? Especially when you get it to ball up a little bit. I really hope this message catches your attention. I would love to actually meet you in person. Skol! Davey. Oh by the way I am a very good didgeridoo player been practicing a long time.
Sing the Sorrow is one of my favorite records of all time.
The best album imo

@@stephenallen5939 I consider-- Art of Drowning, Black Sails, and Sing the Sorrow their holy trinity of AFI- their best albums.
Kudos to this interviewer for being able to follow any random direction the conversation went. What a pro!

Afi saved me from myself more than once....
I also really dig Davey havecks side band DREAMCAR
Comparing the Art of Drowning to Motley Crue is something I've literally never thought of...but honestly I can kinda hear it.
I love Davey's roast of Vedder as he nails it perfectly and Welgell does a great job of asking intelligent questions and making informed observations.
Ugh Eddie vedder STINKS, he sounds like a mix of Cher and a stroke.
