The Beauty of Destruction: a U20 Analysis

  • The U20 match is the magnificent payoff to the entire narrative of Blue Lock to this point. The match between the Blue Lock 11 and the Japanese Under-20 team serves as a touchstone to prove the validity of Jinpachi Ego's philosophy of egoism. Through the stories of Oliver Aiku, Shuto Sendou and Sae Itoshi, we are shown the failings of Japanese football first-hand. More than that, the match between the U20 team serves as a battle of ideas to determine the future of Japanese football and who will become its hero. The central conflicts here arethe opposition between Blue Lock's philosophy of destruction - from destroying the opponents to destroying your allies to destroying yourself - and the U20 team's philosophy of creation, spearheaded by Blue Lock's number 2 Ryusei Shidou, as well as an juxtaposition between beauty and ugliness in Sae vs Rin - beautiful vs hideous destruction.

    This is a revised version of the original video. For those who have seen the first version, new content starts at 57:58.
    And just to pre-empt potential questions about the translation I used for Ego's explanation of awakenings in chapter 31: there’s a critical difference here in translation between the official digital and physical releases of this scene. The earlier digital version doesn’t make mention of a puzzle at all, it says that an awakening "occurs after one has accumulated consideration and experience. It's 'learning'." This was subsequently amended in the physical release, which replaces "It's 'learning'" with "Like a puzzle." I checked the original Japanese and that explicitly used the word puzzle. So if you read the digital translation (the one circulating on the internet), you might have missed Ego referencing puzzles at all.

    Isagi is a literal representation of a famous quote by Bruce Lee. "Adapt what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own."

  • @anthonydice1483
    @anthonydice1483 Місяць тому +21

    Also I just love the concept of Isagi’s character being the Hero.
    A hero that causes Emperors chosen by God to crumble before him and evolve just to keep up with him.
    To Kings who’ve always had their thrones being broken and useless in the face of him. And having to become a Tyrant just to not be out done by him.
    And even Death itself feels hopeless in the face of the Hero. The greatest inevitability is overcame by the constant adaptation of the Hero.

    I think isagi being the fusion of creation an destruction is why both Rin a Shidou recognize isagi in the 2nd to 3rd selection as isagi is capable of both destroying Rin’s schemes and predictions as well as bringing about the explosions of creation that define Shidou’s philosophy. I’ll have to re-read but I think Isagi may have been the only player Shidou wholeheartedly praised before the U20 match.

    • @anthonydice1483
      @anthonydice1483 Місяць тому +2

      @@terryanisaurasrex2207 Yep, Shidou only praised Isagi up til that point. Even as a passer he praised Isagi. Also this is why Isagi’s true rivals are Barou and Nagi. Bc they are the only other players that have the ability to create and destroy.

    • @suzelsmanga
      @suzelsmanga  Місяць тому +3

      At the risk of going all "well actually", this is not quite true: Shidou praises both Gagamaru and Yukimiya in the third selection (ch 105)

    • @terryanisaurasrex2207
      @terryanisaurasrex2207 Місяць тому +1

      Ok I just re-read the third selection matchs and Shidou also praised karasu and Otoya in addition to the 2 @suzelsmanga mentioned, but what did happen is that Isagi is the only one who Shidou says “explodes” outside of himself up to that point. There’s is also a discernible difference in the that final piece of praise compared to the other praise he’s given including the one towards isagi’s pass since they were more in the moment reactions while his reaction to Isagi’s shot was initially shock/surprise before he congratulates Isagi. This difference might be because the shot was directly after isagi had just rebuilt himself with the new piece of “reflex” and shidou noticed the “explosion” of creation, or I might be reading into to much, only Kaneshiro knows ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

      Thanks so much, messages like these really make my day! And absolutely, I've got a lot to say about the NEL! I have a similar breakdown of the Ubers match ('The king and the kingmaker') which I'd highly recommend. I'll certainly do a big one on the NEL as a whole as well once the arc wraps, and at some point also one on the Manshine match!

      @@suzelsmanga I already viewed your analysis of the Ubers'match and I found it really interesting and all the more clever now that we know Isagi being more established in the BM team than Kaiser: the conflict of influence over the team and the process of being "worthy/legitimate of the endorsement of the other team mates" were real.
      I really like the sociological/philosophical aspect that you bring in your analysis and I look forward into your next videos !

      Thanks so much! It's a small joke based on one of my earliest Blue Lock videos, Blue Lock's Capitalist Hellscape, where I present Aiku as a victim of capitalist realism (basically, that his act of resistance against the powers of capital is itself co-opted by capital). In all fairness though I also just like saying 'comrade Oliver Aiku' because it rolls off the tongue really nicely haha

    After latest chapters, Rin and Kaiser now both have something that Isagi does not (among other things). Curve shots.
    I imagine Isagi training to do direct curve shots. if that is even possible.

    • @anthonydice1483
      @anthonydice1483 Місяць тому +2

      @@colstratos6320 It is, but it will be doing something that even Kaiser had a hard time doing. Making the ball curved while moving. That’s why I believe he will awaken or steal the eye Charles has which I call the Trivela eye. Which is a eye that reads and understands the passes being made while also being able to make the right strike to the ball for that pass or goal.
