    Thank you, Kavalier.
You contribute so very much to these simple aspects of life getting better and better.
In the search for great undershirts I jumped from haberdashers to sport and outdoorsmen's wear where real tech would likely be discovered by an innovative designer. This jump in searching has proven very fruitful for all base-layer garments and much more.
Sport and outdoorsy people seem to focus on the utilitarian needs as the top priority. That is good for us humans. The main value of undershirts is wicking away moisture from bacteria "hoping" to have the ideal environment in our armpits.
Men's armpits have plenty of apocrine glands (also aplenty in our groin). The sweat from apocrine glands is thicker than sweat from eccrine glands located across most of our skin. In a moist armpit, bacteria devour the sweat and produce their smelly output. Halting smells from bacteria feasting on our sweat is a priority. As Kavalier mentions wicking away sweat and its discoloring of fine dress shirts is at least an equally valuable priority.
Our Kavalier's perception of the distracting sleeve lines of t-shirts beneath a dress shirt is true. If we ever do remove our suitcoats or sportcoats during the business day, such a distraction is one of many that occur. Sleeveless undershirts solve that distraction while having more fabric in the armpit for ideal wicking away of moisture. IF THE COMPOSITION of the fabric is effective.
My current favorite is ShowersPass men's Sleeveless Body-Mapped Baselayer in white.
This combines several solutions to an array of challenges poorly solved by others. Sleeveless undershirts (in v-neck or crew) have been designed and morphed from cotton or silk to tech-fabrics designed for various uses: wicking and cooling, wicking and warming, anti-microbial combating of bacteria, compression, etc.), and warmth are a perfect match of seams beneath the business professional shirt. This layer by ShowersPass is meant to create slight compression which confers the slight benefit of better circulation and muscle recovery from exertion. Since most North Americans sadly do not exert, this compression and recovery are of less importance to most.
Among the first modern sleeveless undershirts was by 2xist with all cotton and then blends. They and their spin-off on C-in2 stalled their creativity in favor of enormous production success. Other start-ups from the USA/Mexico/Colombia grabbed the innovation-baton and are racing forward for niche customers like me -- business and formal attire plus vigorous sport and harsh-weather activity.
The typical t-shirt collar and the sleeves cause distinct lines that are seen beneath a shirt. This ShowersPass is sleeveless, thus eliminating the end-of sleeve lines the undershirt possessed. It has a wonderfully comfortable, higher-than-usual collar that is completely hidden by the dress shirt collar and bowtie, bolo tie or various knots of the long tie. Therefore, the entire body of the dress shirt in suitcoat or out is displaying a brighter white and zero lines of distraction.
Creating a color "POP!" under a dress shirt is one of the secondary values of an undershirt. Regardless of my skin tone, this white undershirt "POPS" the white dress shirt to a brighter presentation level. Meant for cyclists in a frenzy, the wicking of this ShowersPass sleeveless is excellent and the brightening effect it creates (when worn beneath a dress shirt) is worthy of calling a "POP!!!" Wicking-cooling, sleek compression, lines that mimic those of the dress shirt, and availability in white without any brash logo that imposes its brand through the shirt is all woven in my favorite from ShowersPass. Of course, I have zero connection or reward of any sort from the ShowersPass people and have absolutely no past in the clothing industry where grudges and vendettas flourish with favoritism.

I know you’re not the biggest Uniqlo fan, but this is where you should really look at them because this is where they shine! I am a road warrior and very picky about my clothes, and I use the Uniqlo Airism under-shirts daily. They come in all the colors you could want, including the tan color you are wearing in this video. They also have seamless options that are a very breathable and flexible mesh... and they cost only $15! Well worth it!

Uniqlo Airism undershirts were my first upgrade from a cotton undershirt and I've stuck with them for 3+ years. They work well and they're priced (relatively) inexpensively. $10 per undershirt is expensive compared to a pack of cotton tees but I find $30+ for a Ribbed or Thompson and $55 for a Tani tee to be absurd.
Only negative is that they're synthetic (so they stink) and they're delicate (so I hang dry them.)

The whole point of an undershirt should be that it's a cheap garment so you don't ruin your expensive dress shirt.
At $35-$55 for a single undershirt that's quite pricey. It's not as much as a dress shirt, sure, so if you have the disposable income then go for it but for most people I think these options carry an outrageous premium.
Either way, great review it was rather helpful.

  • @sparkers70

Perhaps I'm too old-school, but a regular crisp white t-shirt under an unbuttoned dress shirt is a perfectly fine look IMO, and flesh-toned undershirts MUST have a low enough neck not to be visible at all, otherwise it looks dingy/stained. BTW that curly hairstyle looks fantastic.. kinda reminds me of Colin Morgan.

    • @tugsamarreta8674

how to wear an undershirt is entirely based on personal preference, so there is no official "wrong" way to do it.
that said, there a definitely people, including myself, that have opinions about undershirt-wearing best practices.
generally speaking, with an open collar, i recommend wearing a v-neck undershirt. only exception is if you have lots of chest hair or tattoos that you want to cover. that said, if you like to rock your white crew neck undershirt under an unbutton dress shirt, i say more power to ya (:

Hey Jon! Kostas here! I actually dig the hair!
I never used undershirts, even though I sweat a little more but I can see the use for some people. I think it also depends a lot on the weave of the shirt, Poplin for example is quite see through. Silly question, do you need to wash them after every use?

    • @Ribbedtee
      @Ribbedtee 3 роки тому

Heya Misiu, great question! Washing frequency is a personal choice, and can be dependent on many factors. While we recommend laundering undershirts & underwear after use, that laundering can be a simple hand wash & hang dry overnight.
Of course most undershirts (or any clothing item) can be worn more than once before laundering, so we leave the wash-to-wear ratio up to the individual :)

I just recently purchased some underwear you might like! - Brand I'd never heard of before. I've had them for a few weeks now and, so far, they're awesome. I used to buy the cheap Hanes cotton multi-pack boxer-briefs, but was SO tired of them wearing out in just a few months. - I'm a bit of a germ freak, so I wash them in the hottest setting, which probably contributes. But, I was so sick of the regular store brands' short lifespan, that I started buying Calvin Kleins. - So worth it! - Lasted three times as long! But, I'm 6'1" with a stocky build to begin with. And with the recent world health events, I've been out and about less - really cutting into my excersize routine. So, I've put on some pounds and sized out of the Calvins I used to buy in 1X, and CKs only goes up to 1X! - By the way, I believe most of the brands you featured only offer sizes up to 2X (Manual Outfitters, for instance, undershirts do go up to 2X, but their clothes only go up to 1X). - Something to keep in mind and mention when reviewing, perhaps. So, I had to find a new option. And I'd been wanting to try Bamboo underwear. - I've heard great things about the quality and feel and antimicrobial properties, as well as the sustainability of Bamboo, as a natural resource/material. So, I eventuality tracked down some Bamboo modal (with 5% Spandex) underwear from a brand called David Archy. And, like I said, been wearing them for a few weeks now and, so far, they're great! - We'll see how long they last - that's the true test. I have not tried their t-shirts yet - maybe in the future, but I tend to like 100% cotton for my Ts. - Maybe I'll try your Thompson recommendation.
