  • My Montu (martial) focus is in West Afrikan and Afrikan Diasporic combat arts. I do this through the modality of modern stick fighting as well as West Afrikan sword dances. In this video, I combined aspects of the Agbekor dance of the Ewe people, and the N'aye dance of the Balanta people. These both feature techniques that seem applicable to modern stick/sword fighting, which gives us an idea of how West Afrikan sword styles looked.

We need a west African character for the soul caliber or samurai showdown series

support African artists who create and own our own intellectual property instead of investing in eurasian i.p. with an african character here and there 😡. there's no representation like self-representation.

I agree, it would be really unlikely that Diasporic arts "got" their thrusts from European sources.

can you provide a link to full versions of these dances? I think it would be helpful to analyze the full dances as they can provide further context to some of the moves.
