I still have the original Nagash model. Back in the world that was, when they were simply the undead. It is still the most fleshed out fictional setting I’ve ever known. That world that was!
@@nate742 of course I have. I actually have a copy of the Lord of the Rings in the unabridged version as Tolkien wanted it. The Simarillion was not meant to be published. While epic it is still a single novel. There were literally dozens of warhammer fantasy novels going back to the 80s. The Chaos blade chronicles, the Malus series, the Sundering. Just to name a few. Forget Gotrek and Felix that was he newer comic book like series. Individually the novels are not much. It is in the collected sum that they shine.
At least in AoS we know what happens when you die. It always bothers me that we don't know for sure what happens to the souls of the normal faithful in 40k. We know that the Ecclesiarchy promises heavens to those who die in his name, but we also know human souls have a tendency to just fade away into the warp, if they're lucky enough not to be noticed by a neverborn first. Does the Emperor gather the souls of every loyal guardsman to the foot of the Golden Throne, and if he does, is that akin to a noble paradise, or more like being drawn in to the Astronomicon and being devoured?
I always liked the idea that a Guardsman's afterlife was akin to waking up on a battlefield in the warp, his fallen comrades in arms standing next to him with a gun in hand helping him back up with a grin saying "Good to see you in one piece, mate. Lets show 'em why letting us get in here was a mistake."
@@Gitskreig Actually, for a bit of world building once, I wrote a description of an ancient giant Eclesiarchy mural on a world. It depicted The Last Day and The Last War. On the right, Dorn prepares the souls of all the dead loyal anti-aircraft and artillery gunners, the PDF soldiers, and the space station crews to stand upon The Last Wall. So I guess that's my wish for them, that at the end, when Abaddon steps over the bodies of Ghazghkull and the last Hive Tyrant of Leviathan, and onto the steps of the Golden Throne, that out will blossom the Star Child at the head of every soul that has ever truely served the Emperor, because the Emperor does in deed protect.
