I have been to both cities several times. I prefer Charleston, I find the architecture, and the food superior to Savannah. I find Charleston, at least in the historic district, cleaner. And find the shopping is better in Charleston, and I find the people more friendly.
That being said, it is, of course, a matter of preference. Both great cities.

I love both Savannah and Charleston very much. In fact they are two of my favorite places on earth. I thought you video was fairly comprehensive but there are some important things you missed in your video I'd like to touch on.
    1. Carriage tours ARE available in Savannah as well. I should know, it was the first tour I took on my first trip to vacation there.
Conversely there are air conditioned bus tours available in Charleston as well.
    2. Opinions are subjective but since you asked I find Savannah to be far less like a big city than Charleston. There are far more instances of brick paved or cobblestone streets, Olgethorpe Park is far more beautiful (not talking about the view over the harbor here just the park itself) than White Point Gardens (The Battery) and I feel like the Savannah has a less commercial feel to it than Charleston. To be clear the Savannah historic district is about the same size as downtown Charleston but the Charleston metro is significantly larger than Savannah.
    3. My personal feeling is that Charleston has better food and Savannah has a better bar scene. Savannah in fact is absolutely famous in the south for it's bar scene The Lady Chablis was an icon of the city and St Patrick's Day rivals Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Charleston on the other hand is all about the amazing low country cuisine with some of the finest restaurants in all of the south at least in my opinon.
    4. You didn't touch on this at all but the beaches in Charleston are of greater variety and higher quality than in Savannah. I like Tybee but I LOVED Isle of Palms, Folly Beach and Sullivan's Island. However Tybee Lighthouse is prettier and better preserved than either Sullivan's Light or Morris Light.
    5. You could spend a month or more in either city seeing all the attractions on offer. I would like to point out that Fort Pulaski and Fort Jackson and Battery Brumby are impressive in their own right compared to Fort Moultrie and Fort Sumter. And the Talmadge Memorial Bridge in Savannah is every bit as impressive as the Ravenel Bridge in Charleston. There is nothing remotely like Patriot's Point naval museum in Savannah however and there is nothing to equal the mystique of the Mercer-William's House in all of the great and beautiful homes in Charleston. Honestly sight seeing is a wash between the two cities with two key exceptions.
    6. And activities on the water are one of those key exceptions! If you want to sail, fish, take a sight seeing tour or cruise with dolphins Charleston is hands down the winner. Savannah just doesn't have the expansive harbor mouth provided by the confluence of the Ashley and the Cooper River. The other exception is the outlying network of plantation homes in the Charleston area. There is nothing like Boone Hall, Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, and Drayton Hall near Savannah.
    7. If you didn't see Market Street or King Street for shopping in Charleston you missed out, I mean you really missed out. River Street, Factors Walk and Abercorn Street in Savannah are equally impressive.
    8. There is one place in Savannah that truly has no equal to Charleston for me that you might not even think of if you haven't seen Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil or read the book and that's Bonaventure Cemetery. Aside from the natural beauty of the location the cemetery is set it has some of the most fascinating old grave markers I've ever seen. It's well worth a couple of hours to wander among the monuments and read some of the inscriptions .
As I said I adore both of these cities in all their genteel majesty and find them to be among my favorite places on earth. A lifetime in either wouldn't be nearly enough time to enjoy them to their fullest potential.

You make some good points, and I have been to both cities many times. I plan on moving to Beaufort, SC to split the difference, and take advantage of both cities - 75 min north to Chas., and 45 min south to Savannah. Charleston is a bit more formal, but also has more on the cultural front. Savannah is very relaxed and welcoming, but nothing like Spoleto in Savannah. The area just beyond the historic district is a bit sketchy in Savannah. King Street is a much classier shopping street than Riverwalk - which is basically a fun and eating street. While both cities have great food scenes, Charleston has a lot more of the quality dining. For living, Savannah is considerably cheaper - particularly with regard to housing prices. College of Charleston is beautiful, while SCAD has no real campus, but spread around in different buildings downtown. Leoplod's ice cream in Savannah is superb, but Charleston has a great gelato place. The shade in the Savannah squares is greatly appreciated on hot days, where Charleston has no big shaded park. There are many varied water views in Charleston, where they are more limited in Savannah. I enjoy both cities very much, so best to visit both often. If you like minor league baseball, Charleston has a much better venue (Bill Murray is part owner of the Riverdogs). I think the overall coast of SC is prettier than GA, though Jekyll Island & the Golden Isles are worth a trip, too in GA. I think Savannah is more the party town, while Chas is the culture town.

As a transplant to Charleston, SC this is my opinion. Driving over the rivers of Charleston is beautiful. But nothing beats downtown Savannah. The smell of the mud when going into West Ashley or James Island is an experience. But setting around the fountain in Forsyth Square on a weekend is too. I guess I'm blessed in being able to choose which city I want to experience when I want.

Fort Pulaski at Savannah, you mentioned fort Sumter. Typical review " Plan your visit to Ft Pulaski to take in the NPS tour of the fort. Our guide was excellent in his explanation of the construction, armament and the action that took place during the Civil War. If you only have time or interest in one of Ft Pulaski or Ft Sumter (Charleston harbor) take in Ft Pulaski. Walk around the outside of the fort to see damage from the bombardment and spot cannonballs still imbedded in the walls. Visitor Center outside the fort was closed but sounded like it would open soon." Austin from MD

    • @jdhjimbo
      @jdhjimbo 3 роки тому +3

Similar, but NOLA much bigger than either - and way more dangerous, once you leave the French Quarter. The music scene is better in NOLA, along with street artists. The MS River is not nearly as pretty as the ocean in Chas or Savannah, and it does not get breezes in the summer, making the humidity really oppressive. No great beaches near NOLA, but they do have lots of glorious plantations to visit along the Great River Road. On a po radical matter, NOLA does not have good airfares to or from MSY, so if you lived there it would be a drag, plus there are really not any other cities or attractions nearby, whereas, you can get to the mountains within 3.5-4 hours drive or a short plane flight from either Lowcountry city, as well as more convenient to getting lots of other places up and down the eastern seaboard. NOLA does have pro sports teams, however, if that is a passion. Louisiana is the wettest state in the US, so lots of heavy rains, and while all 3 citues have hurricane danger, NOLA is the more likely to be hit.

The biggest difference maker beachwise between CHS and SAV is that Charleston has more than just one island, Folly Beach as you described in your comparison. There are three others besides Folly just a short drive from Charleston, each very unique. Sullivan's Island is actually closer to Charleston than Folly and has a way more of a relaxed vibe than Folly with some amazing dining options in its business district. Also, just north of Sullivans is Isle of Palms. A gorgeous beach with a very active business district of its own and lots of beach volleyball. Also just south of Folly Beach is Kiawah, probably the most beautiful beach on the entire Southeast coast and a perennial winner of Mr. Beach's cleanest water. Havent been to Savannah in ages but I grew up in Charleston. Over the last 20 years or so Charleston has become so gentrified it has lost a lot of its character and culture. It went from a city of families that had been there for generations to a city of yuppies and college students across the entire peninsula. There was a time you could walk the streets of Charleston and hear the distinct Charleston accent/dialect (Gullah) go into mom and pop shops up and down King St and really interact with a true native Charlestonian. Sadly the people that built this beautiful city and lived there for generations have been priced out into the rural surrounding areas away from the coast.

@@lexhobbs1050 thank you. I did not believe you, LOL, so I asked Siri and you are right! According to the population of the major cities and South Carolina from Wikipedia which is the source Siri used, Charleston is the largest city in South Carolina. I am shocked. When I lived there, the population was about 66,000 which was at the time about half of the population of North Charleston. Today the population was listed as of 2019 has approximately 137,000. Wow! Obviously there has been a lot of growth without question, and I know that they were messing around with the boundaries of the city, not to mention it has been 20 years since I live there. But that kind of gross is just amazing!

You are kidding right? I was just in Savannah. Savannah is a pretty dismal! The city / river view is solely of industrial shipping port. Architecture is historic but old and dirty looking….think drab.

@@MsElfMannequin I can't gauge if ghetto is a bad thing or not in your context. I like ghetto. I grew up in the ghetto's of The Bronx my whole life- but I think it's different from class-less. You could be ghetto but exude class. So what are we talking here?

@@MsElfMannequin If by ghetto you mean "black" then yes there are way more black hence more poverty but Savannah has far more black owned businesses that are thriving. The Grey is a black owned James Beard winner restaurant that is the most popular fine dining restaurant in Savannah. Charleston is 73 percent white and has a higher average income.
New Orleans is ghetto too but people love it still. I look at Savannah like how Atlanta was in the 90s before the Olympics.
Lot of blacks in Atlanta who had the mentality you do about Savannah left but lots more stayed. Now Atlanta has the second largest black middle class in America after DC. Second most number of block Millionaires. Yet you talk to some people in some of Atlanta ghettos and they dont see whats going on just a few blocks away as they lacked the vision others see. First ones complaining about gentrification. BTW if you didnt know it, "old white people" rule the world. Im just sayin...lol
I plan to move to Savannah and start a business to take advantage of a booming economy. Savannah is a good place if you are black to start a business.
Ghetto is a mentality. Its effects you if you only surround yourself around ghetto people. Remember it takes more than one to make a ghetto. If thats all you see then i would suggest creating a new environment and open your eyes to the possibilities and not the limitations whether real or imagined
