The Rock is notable for his "never lose" stipulation in his contract, which is almost the polar opposite of Sean Beans, "Always die" contract stipulation. Clearly dying just allows you to express more as an actor.
He's not the only one to have that. Vin Diesel has that too.

@@Demun1649 not sure if you're deliberately misunderstanding me. But to clarify. Neeson has a Northern Irish accent. Spicer's attempt sounded Southern, IE the wrong side of the border. I was not making any comment about which is the right side of the border in a general sense

Isn’t a big part of the problem why Dwayne isn’t in films like Total Recall, Running Man, Demolition Man, The 5th Element etc is because films like that aren’t being made any more, for The Rock to appear in?
It’s mostly sequels, multiverses, cinematic universes and franchises. Films that were, until recently, seen as easy and reliable, copy/paste, surefire money spinners.
Also, he’s great in Moana.
Was also hilarious in Pain and Gain. Maybe between Pain and Gain or The Rundown for the actual be Rock performance

@@Bale4Bond no one said he was, but he is a lot better than the rock and has far more range. Not only that but if you see him in interviews he does express that he wants to do different parts and push himself as an actor and not stay in a comfort zone. That was all. Not saying he’s the best actor ever but between the rock, John cena, hulk hogan,Arnold Schwarzenegger and now even Connor mcgreggor or anyone comparable I do think he’s the best.

He is no Arni (who is underrated as an actor, in my opinion) but he trumps many of the others you have mentioned.
I never thought about his career that much the comparison to Arnie is interesting.
Both have little integrity, are jacked and have loads of charisma.

2:02 is a terrible impression of Liam Neeson, but a brilliant impression of Chris O'Dowd in a serious role.
The Rock is a very nice and very charming guy. He will do nothing to offend you. That is his problem. He has no real opinions of his own and is unwilling to take risks. He will not make it in politics.
Agree completely. Johnson very clearly has a strong preference for the type of movies he wants to, and has very good agents that make sure he gets to make them again and again. The similarity and mediocrity of the movies he makes is really striking. The comparison with Arnie is apt. His body of work is terrific- The Terminator, Terminator 2, Predator, True Lies, the Running Man, Total Recall, he even has some good comedies. A lot of these were genre-defining or amongst the best in their genre. It's really something to compare these to the same Jungle Movie and the same Fast and Furious movie endlessly.
Liam Neeson really put that forklift experience to use when he played a horny ghost in High Spirits.

It’s not really ‘an Irish accent’ though, is it. It’s more of a ‘Liam Neeson accent’.
There are loads of Irish people who sound similar to this. There's also a weird number who sound like they came straight off the couch in Friends.

I've never seen a Movie with Dwayne Johnson in it. Doesn't look as though I've missed much.
Arnold Swarchnegger and Stallone had great classic movies 🍿 like Terminator and Predator and Rocky and Rambo, The Rock has NEVER had a classic iconic movie that will be remembered several decades from now, just pure style and NO Substance, he is just a vacuous shallow actor with no range
The Rock was great in Pain and Gain (albeit in a co-starring role), and also in Ballers, which was an HBO series, not a movie, but he he played an actual human being with flaws and stuff, and he was really great there. It's too bad he'll likely never live up to the promise - totally due to his own personal choices - he showed in those two projects again. 🤷🏽♂
I agree, I often watch the Rock and think.. you need to do something darker, grittier.. instead of cringe action

Arnie's first film, Hercules in New York, is hilariously bad. His Austrian accent is so strong he's overdubbed. It's a film so bad it's brilliant.

What makes you think that? He's smart enough to be as bland as can be in order to appeal the highest amount of people possible. It'd be much easier to share bad/dumb takes in public from time to time, than to just have everything constantly thought out so that he never says anything mildly controversial

I too was in awe of how bad that impression was.
I wish Liam Neeson would offer to do that bit for reupload of the vid. I think it would fit his sense of humour.
He did his best acting in the movie Southland Tales. No action movie shlock... he played (confusingly) an action movie star who wakes up with amnesia next to a corn star. Spends the whole movie being confused and scared, it's an excellent satire and that's why it was a box office flop. 2008 wasn't ready for it and it's probably the main reason why he only chose "safe" roles from that point onwards.
Dave Bautista is probably the opposite of this. Also a former WWE star that leveraged his physical size to play characters like Drax in film.
But has decided that he wants to be considered a serious actor with roles like Knock at the Cabin.

The annoying part is that earlier on in his career, he did do more interesting roles. In "Be Cool" he was a gay cowboy, a role I feel he'd never do now. I've heard good things about Southland Tales, although I haven't seen it, but I think that was from the director of Donnie Darko, not the kind of thing he'd do now either.
I think there was a point where he really leaned in to the "brand" stuff as was mentioned in the video and that he lost any interest in doing legitimately interesting roles and needed to stay squeaky clean and heroic as well as not ever being beaten or overwhelmed in a fight on screen to the smallest degree.
Batista has been a wrestler turned actor who has legitimate talent and a sense of humility.

Those days are mostly over. Since the 2000s, studios will instead get an actor, then have them train for the role. Examples: Matt Damon as Jason Bourne, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. The result: action-movie stars who can act.
The early 2000's The Rock was his most charismatic.
Now it is like he is not even human anymore, just a brand.

Interresting video. Schwarzenegger movies were well written and directed with good supporting actors. The Rock does not seemed to have managed that quality of material, which appears to be the key difference.
Lol about Neeson yes he was a forklift Driver for Guinness but he was a successful youth Boxer in his Native Northern Ireland.
Would recommend blank check pod, last action hero, when they go through Arnie and his motivation to pivot in film making
The comedy & sports films weren’t his first movies though. The Mummy Returns was followed by his spinoff The Scorpion King

I had thought that this would be about the ever-decreasing circle that results in enormous amounts of money being earned by, and thrown at. muscle-method-acting. No craft (unlike many, e.g. Gene Hackman perfomed in theatre, hence his compelling portrayals) and I thought it would highlight how a star on the walk of fame has been horribly devalued since the 1980's
Normally, I feel better, or cheered, having watched a Michael Spicer video. Maybe I am alone, but this one did not interest me as much as I had hoped. Dwayne is not the problem, or really offensive to me, but he was utterly predictable in Doom, and I only kept watching because of Karl Urban, and now avoid anything with Dwayne in it. He is just a money-making tool. If I were to pick out one thing from this video, it is the sad prospect of someone thinking that they "can unite our country [...] if that's what the people want" because their character in films is never nuanced, only has to look buff, and always wins. God-complex flavoured with sycophant-induced delusion?
I did like the idea of drawing inspiration from real-life experience of moving pallets, but correctly predicted the backlash about the accent.
he's so authentic he plays himself in every movie.

Schwarzenegger knew his limits and just starred in other people's movies. Dwayne Inc is a vertically integrated business. He buys licences to old IP in order to produce, star in, and advertise his other investments. Nothing wrong with that, but let's not pretend there's anything deeper to his work.

This is the first video of your new series that I've watched, and I think you make a lot of good points and deliver them well. I'd like to offer a little constructive criticism (for whatever it's worth considering you're a professional comedian and I'm not!) if that's alright. I enjoyed the cutaway sketches, but I think all of the ones in this video ran a little bit too long for my taste.
The forklift sketch was a pleasant surprise, and I had anticipated the "get back to work" punchline, but I personally would have enjoyed it more if you had followed "isn't that martial arts?" with "and he said, 'get back to work.'" This being the first sketch in the video, though, the surprise really carried it through the slight drag of the few seconds of (in my opinion) unnecessary dialogue.
I felt the middle sketch could have ended with the more introspective Michael's "yeah alright then" as the punchline. I think the portion afterwards was meant to underscore that the movie enthusiast Michael wasn't actually that concerned with the message, but I think that was made clear enough in the parts of the sketch leading up to that point, and ending with the more introspective Michael giving up his questioning (indicating that it was performative rather than genuine, or that we all just need to stop thinking so hard and enjoy something every once in a while, both equally accurate satirical points) would have made the sketch feel tighter and more satisfying.
Similarly, the sketch of The Rock's presidential candidate screening interview could have been a bit tighter as well. I thought the meta joke about the Michael in the sketch starting to criticize the sketch from within it was amusing, if a little unsurprising, but I think the best way to give it the most impact as a punchline would have been to end it after the confused "what?" from Michael as The Rock. I personally really enjoy when meta jokes are stonewalled by other characters in a scene, making the joke a momentary puncture of the fourth wall rather than a full-on demolition of it, and having ended with Michael as The Rock's confusion would have been a very effective way of making that happen while also preserving the momentum of the comedic timing of the punchline.
Of course, this is all my personal preference, nothing objective about it. If you like how this video came out and don't want to change a thing for next time, I understand. And as I said at the beginning of my comment, this is an amateur advising a professional; it wouldn't surprise me at all if everything I talked about above was an intentional choice on your part as your personal style. I just wanted to offer my thoughts in case you found them useful while finding your footing with this new format. It was a really great video regardless!
I'm really interested to know what it is that makes you think that he has more to give? The impression he gives off to me is one of vapidness and self obsession. To be capable of the type of shilling, deception, and outright lying he does in the service of fulfilling his corporate obligations, he must live in the center of an extremely powerful moral vacuum.
Kinda relevant to your most recent video, The Rock has turned out to be nothing like his public persona. There are articles detailing how incredibly difficult he is to work with and how has zero professionalism or consideration for his work colleagues

Man, I used to think of all the wrestlers turned actors, the Rock was the best. John Cena really showed me he's something else and Bautista is just phenomenal in all his roles. The Rock really peaked in Fast 7

He did some character acting in Get Shorty. He also is a good comedic actor in Pain and Gain. I think he is an interesting guy. He created a great character in WWE as the Rock and then went into movies and became successful. He just needs a director to take a risk on him in something against type.

He actively chose to work with Michael Bay and they made what I consider to be one of the most horrendous films ever brought into existence. It was as if that massive concentration of bad taste in that moment manifested itself in cinematic form and then did the only thing such massive bad taste could do -- it turned into pure evil. @Jan-se1nd There's a difference between Olympic style Amateur Wrestling and Professional Wrestling. The latter is a theatrical, entertainment based art form. I'm pretty sure The Undertaker, Mick Foley, Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes, Shawn Michaels etc do not have any medals either, but all regarded as legends in the industry.

@Jan-se1nd No one is comparing Bret Hart to Iron Mike Tyson. We all know it's entertainment.
Way more entertaining than bodybuilding due to various characters and storylines. Like bodybuilding, there's obviously a lot of strength involved. However, there is also a lot of athleticism, and agility involved. The likes of Rey Mysterio, Rob Van Dam etc are known for their acrobatic, high-flying moves etc. Injuries, concussions, stitches etc are a regular occurrence due to the very physical nature of the job. They are basically stunt men performing in front of a live audience.
A few of them actually do have amateur accolades like Olympic gold medalist Kurt Angle, Brock Lesnar, Shelton Benjamin etc.
Best video on my issue with Dwayne Johnson, to date. Has a overinflated ego and has really successful branch off his own franchise, his worth has also been inflated playing big muscly guys in other peoples franchises. Black Adam was his chance. he blew it (with his rocky ego).
If anything Spicer, I'm surprised you'd of mentioned will smith in this video, seeing as Dwayne Johnson originally wanted to be "The Next Will Smith" (yet he is no where near).

It’s like yeah jungle cruise is a flop based on an Amusement park ride that nobody saw but to be fair pirates was an outrageous success coming from the same concept so you can somewhat excuse that
I live under a rock. No puns, no alluding I'm having some kind of personal or imaginary relationship with him, btw. I know who he is but have not watched movies in years so I know nothing about his career. The comparison with Arnold was interesting (and he's from an era when I still lived in the real world so I know more about him. Also rewatched Total Recall and Terminators a lot way back when). Is Dwayne quite intelligent? I'm really asking due to ignorance on my part. Can he make some difference outside of movies or in other genres?
Johnson is best in short/cameo roles; The other guys, Reno 911: Diamine.
