I remember seeing the 2 fights way back when they happened. The loss of Sanchez was a real tragedy, he was one of the best ever, a real beautiful fluid boxer, i think one of the top 10 of all time.
That might be stretching it a bit. But not by much, and maybe not at all. There's only one guy, maybe two, that I think could equal him in the featherweight/lightweight class, and that would possibly be the great Willie Pep at his peak at featherweight. If Sanchez had lived a bit longer and moved up to lightweight, the only guy there that would've possibly given him any trouble would be the great Roberto Duran at his peak. I put Sanchez in this group of 3. Think about that. He was right there with 2 of the greatest fighters who ever lived. Duran may be the only guy who loved to fight as much as Sanchez did. He and Sanchez viewed boxing like a chess match. People talk about how the world was cheated when we didn't get to see Ali from 1967-1970. Well, we got cheated even more when Sanchez life was cut short. I've never seen a better fighter, and I've been watching boxing since the late 1950s Gillette sponsored Friday night fights, with Don Dunphy announcing.
Is it me or is Sanchez kind of scary? It's just how calm he is and how he is toying with his opponents. What can you do against this guy? Nothing works. You don't know how good he is or what he is going to hit you with. If you give more effort then you get a harder beatdown. He had Lopez completely figured out and I don't think Lopez realised it. I'd be terrified to get in the ring with Sanchez. I give credit to Lopez for at least trying but damn he got worked.
Sanchez best fight was against Wilfredo Gomez. Gomez was 28 wins with 28 knockouts and was a 4-1 favorite when he fought Sanchez. Gomez was never in the fight as Sanchez destroyed him. I remember the boxing poster: “Battle of the Little Giants.”
Its unbelievable that Sanchez died at 23 years old and lost only once by split decision 46 fights at the age of 23. He died in a car accident at 3:30 AM. Sad.
@MannyGonzalezReyna I am sure it did. I'd love to see some documentary made about his life to learn more about him. He died over 40 years ago. I came across him by mere coincidence. I was kind of taken aback when I read up on him. I had heard of him but I did not realize how great he was for such a young age.
@@theshawdows I’d have to look up the date of that title fight. It was years past, 3 weeks after that fight in Madison Square Garden. It was an auto accident in Mexico City

@@CaseyCook-xs2ob Gomez wasn’t that big of a puncher at Featherweight. Gomez’ 28 wins with 28 KO’s were all at 122. Danny Little Red Lopez had 1 shot KO power, and Sanchez walk right through them. He had 39 knockout in 42 fights and a granite chin. It's worth a try for a world title. They didn't realise that Salvador was in another galaxy as a fighter.
After the beating and complete annihilation in the first fight it should have been crystal clear that Little Red could not compete with Sanchez, because he was from another galaxy. And Little Red certainly was no bum!
Sanchez, one of the most gifted fighters of the 20th century .. in any weight class .. As for Lopez, he just seemed to rely on punching power as his career went on, sometimes your best strength becomes your greatest burden. That power caused him to neglect his core movement and foot speed. By the time of the Sanchez fights Lopez is a plodding flat footed fighter, something he was not when he started out. .. To boxing aficionados out there, do you buy this MMA argument that the boxer punches harder than an MMA fighter because the boxer’s gloves are bigger and the MMA fighter’s gloves are smaller? They claim that because boxing gloves are bigger, and have more cushion, so boxers can punch harder and not hurt their hands.

In their primes, Chavez was a full weight class heavier, so he would have starched Sanchez. That being said, Sanchez was the better fighter.
