Amazing video ! Just subscribed I learned so much. Does Back up and Sync on Mac mess with anything involving the photos on iCloud camera roll on the Mac? Is this only for files with documents and such ?
Just for documents but we have a video in our members area of www.itgenius.com/cc with info on photos integration
back up and sync it's a nightmare, constantly syncing files when there's nothing to sync. It simply start syncing any time you boot your system, sucking a lot of cpu resources. simply ridiculous!
Tried filestream?
I started using Backup & Sync for my Surface Pro 7 and I got used to the concept but the setup was horribly difficult. Also, I had to go back to the settings to add and take off folders when I needed them and didn't need them anymore. Google Drive File Stream takes care of all that by basically being a Google Drive App but in your File folder. Similar to how ChromeOS does.
yep its excellent
So where is the url for Office Editing?
Thanks for the explanation. The best video on youtube about this subject. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Amazing review thanks so much. I’ve got a G-Suite account and trying out Google Drive, but I can’t seem to send a link to someone without needing a sign-in/login. Is that feature only available for personal Google accounts? I’m trying to send files to clients without having them need to sign into Google.
Yep its available in advanced sharing settings
itGenius - Google Cloud Experts can you help me find advanced sharing settings? I can’t seem to find it
Also - what happens if I choose to sync an external hard drive and unplug it? Will I be able to access the files using File Stream? I’m thinking of using Backup and Sync to “sync” my external hard drive at my home office (plugged into my laptop), and I’d like to access those files when I’m not home and my laptop is with me (assuming it’s already done with syncing the hard drive to the cloud)
Yep you can backup an external drive
Thanks for the video. I switched my data from evernote to google drive as evernote was being slow after their new updates. Now I can work with the notes, files in drive and google keep along with having access of all my photos in google photos in a single subscription.
epic
Thank you so much for this! I wish there was a way to use File Stream with downloads folder and Desktop folder. I think on Mac there is a way to choose a Google Drive folder as your downloads folder... so that's a possible workaround. But I don't think anything you can do for Desktop. Drobox used to have a workaround with sym links but no more. I use my Desktop a lot. Maybe it's time to build a new habit. I really want an easy way to have files in the cloud and like mirrored access to them on my Desktop. Sounds like File Stream is the closest option. Thanks again for this.
you can use backup and sync alongside filestream for this purpose
what is the program that he pulls up at 10:17 and how do i find it? he says its the file browser but i cant seem to find it anywhere
That's the ChromeOS file browser
Great video thanks Pete. Drive File Stream looks like a great option
It does! Great to have you here Greg :)
if you use a file it downloads it to the local computer. whats happends than? will it go back to the cloud if you finished worked on? or what you have to do to dont need your local storage
It'll sync as you save every file
I'm using File Stream but have a problem that my cached files have taken up most of my disk space and I can't seem to free it up. There's no real way of flushing the FS cache memory from my local drive. If you have a solution to that, will be great. Thanks.
There are some registry tweaks you can make. Our team can help if you like: www.itgenius.com/concierge
My problem is that with Backup and sync I had my PC and my laptop sync the same folder, where every change I make in the folder change in both of the computers. But, now I only have the option to sync the folder in one computer and not both.
It should still work in the same way
What about windows index search? a online only file will be found at windows search?
yep if its a google file in filestream
Hello!
If I manage 2 different businesses on 2 different gsuite accounts, how do I add the File Stream for both accounts on one computer?
shared drives would work well for that
@@itGenius_ Yes I am using shared drives on both Gsuite Workspaces, the question is how to have files offline from both gstuites on one device
OK, first off, great video! I learned a lot!
One thing, though ~ why does Google Drive File Stream use up all of my local disk space?
Specifically, why is it ok for Google to advertise that Google Drive File Stream does not use disk space, when in fact it DOES?
(WAAAYYY more than 1gb - more like, "any remaining space" lol)
As a small business owner, I am really let down by this.
Frustrating!!!
Our team can help with this. Reach out if you need help! www.itgenius.com/chat
you're doing something wrong Aaron. You can tell Google Drive File Stream which folders you want to be stored on the cloud and which ones on your computer. The idea is that you only have on your computer what you use often and and all the other stuff will be accesible to you but stored in Google's cloud.
What I figured out is that Drive File Stream saves "cached files" on the local system, which can use a lot of space ~ BUT, simply restarting the device removes the cached files, restoring the locally used space.
What I was doing "wrong" : I use this system to record audio files, and sometimes these recordings are really long and create large files, that in combination with small local storage space, can fill up the device's space pretty quickly!
So now, I just restart my device every other day ~ no issues now!
Thanks for offering to help everyone~✌️
@@lunarfifthstudios Pretty insightful
The 2 things that google drive now needs is being able to create true non-destructible shortcuts/symlinks and to enable an option to stream videos at specific resolutions, like the website does.
Yes I would like that
The symlink thing is a big deal. Really wish file stream had this capability. Some compadibility with WSL would be nice too.
12:09 Did he just say “dick around” or “dig around”?
could have been either!
good
👍🏼
So Google is implementing iCloud functionality 5 years after apple and charging for it
iCloud is a great consumer product but nowhere near the functionality of Google
how is cache pronounced cayshed? Its a straightforward word although I guess it does come from French.
lol
Give me higher bandwidth and DaaS with full executable files permissions on not-my-HD with Google File Stream. In the future you just pay for a subscription for another computer and manipulate it through a thin film keyboard connected to WiFi.
Yep, I think a trend back to terminal-style computing will continue in the coming decades
@@itGenius_ Just when I thought it was safe to forget the 1970's, here you go bringing it back. To be honest, I find myself using the Windows Terminal app from the Windows Store quite a bit, so I guess I'm a bit of a hypocrite. What's old is new and what's new is old.
No word about giving google access to your stuff.
Google don't care about your 'stuff'
File Stream is a technological nightmare of unnecessary complexity.
I disagree!
@@itGenius_ Yes but I actually know better. But that's for another day. Meanwhile sheep to the slaughter.
