Some of these tunes became concert standards for the Dead, but these studio versions remain my favorites, especially Deal and Sugaree. Oh and Birdsong - what a beautiful song!
Jerry at his studio finest. The fact that he had really matured as a guitarist (as compared to his playing in the 1960's) and plays all the instruments (laboriously overdubbed and multi-tracked), including some very fine grand piano and pedal steel (except for the drums--provided by Billy) is only the start of this album's magic. You have his wonderful, soulful, mournful, joyous singing (he hadn't shot his voice through with cigarettes and cocaine and egg creams yet). And the songs & words themselves. Among the finest of all the classic Hunter-Garcia/Grateful Dead songbook (mostly so-called "gems" to Deadheads and musicologists like Deal and Birdsong and Sugaree and Loser and really the entire album). Even the somewhat primitive aural attempts (with only early analogue technology I might add) on the 2nd side of the album retain an authenticity & endearing musicality 45+ years later (I was about 5 y/o when Dr. Garcia recorded this lol). I think there is no doubt that Jerry Garcia will go down as one of the great Western musical geniuses of the 20th Century. With everyone from Louis Armstrong to Robert Johnson to John Coltrane to Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan and the Beatles. The Fat Man Rocked indeed. Thanks so much for posting (and the digital rip from the original vinyl source is definitely the way to go (-;]).
well said. I am not remembering knowing Jerry played all but the drums when I first got this album... I listened to it many times. It is filled with so many awesome Dead tunes. I first saw the boys in Winterland 1974 or so... Never went to 100 shows, just really love that dance band, "Ladies and gentlemen, The Grateful Dead." You know there is nothing left to do but smile smile smile...
@@nickbuckley1031 I was backstage plus one thru Dan 'Lefty Malone' Healy. I don't know what TF egg creams are...maybe 🍮 custard?! I saw Jerry drink coffee & Tia Maria's in bars. ❄️🌎❄️❣️🤣👌❄️
Was introduced to this in 77.....The artwork threw me over....the music took me on the road.....again....and again......Late for Supper????? Shake it shake it! Still going shining on with Dead and Company............................................
48 years ago this album was released. I guess there is music that is timeless, a glimpse of the music of the spheres. Thanks for being the conduit and having to endure the harshness that life on Earth can bring with it. Becoming music, living on in music. Blessings
Heard this LP 10,000 times !!! Looking forward to the Next 10,000 !!! Egg Cream someone asked We used to get them back in the days I remember for maybe a nickel or dime Seltzer water milk chocolate syrup and I think egg yolk Peace and Egg Cream's for All
I had the privilege to be at the Cristal Palace in Kew garden near London with my friends of Elgin Avenue and it was such hight time on every level Ripple, shugare, and the wheel and many "other one" Today listening those make emotional tears rolling on my face I got 70, 2 days ago and it's like it was yesterday consert Love to all deadhead
I met Jerry once in the mid 70's and told him about how the alaskan summer mosquitoes at night sounded like an electronic orchestra. I buzzed up and down to demonstrate and he suddenly beamed, laughed and exclaimed right into my 19 year old face, "FAR OUR MAN!" I never saw him again but I will never forget that moment. I think he used the electronic mosquito idea on Mars Hotel too. What I told him clearly inspired him. Bzzz!
Yes....We got this album when it hit the shelves...We had a Garrard turntable, a big Pioneer amp and AR-3 speakers...For the occasion we got a new Shure V-15 Type 2 Improved cartridge and stylus....Still our favorite tunes....Veneta '72....Jerry Lives....
Just hate it when people click bait ALBUM ENTIRE RECORD and half the tunes were never on it. It's not in order with repeats but those could be copyright laws to get around. There are lots of smart ways to get over copyright laws but they have to be ingenious - turning letters numbers around upside down, up speed and viewer can lower. Thank you for record ❤
Wolfie:What are we playing tonight, Jer? Jerry: Not yet in the moment. Not sure. Miles? Miles: Let’s get crazy with your first studio record, my Bitches Brew and Wolfie’s piano concerto 24 in C minor. Jerry: Yeah, yeah, man!
someone commented about, "Mint Condition Vinyl". They were apparently not impressed. It was a funny comment too! I must agree with them though, I never heard that many pops n clicks on any new LP. For me tonight, it works. There was a lot of money required (and still is) to make a reproduction sound life-like/live. This matters on studio albums as well as live recording in front of an audience. I love great sounding equipment! Much of my net worth in cash is invested in musical equipment.
Douglas Buzby.... what pops and clicks , oh those!!! Yeah these are' not clicks and pops ' they are the homeing signal and transponder signal from andromeda ..... O.K.!!! Bha pops and clicks what rubbish , delusional people !!!!!!
Play this version of The Wheel when I'm dying...it is my favorite sound...more than So What, more than NRPS entire first album, more than Ahmad Jamal's Poinciana...play this one...then you can play the others.
I remember coming home early morning high on LSD
1974 putting on headphones listening to this amazing LP
Pure Bliss
May the wind blow you safety home
Jerry's 'cold steel' certainly was pure bliss!

Agreed. Such a great album
Absolutely

One of the most underrated debut albums of all time.
Oh and lest we forget - the real gem of the album - The Wheel.
Love it! I caught the final performance of The Wheel: Seattle '95.
Hearing it on acid changed my life.
Me too - I felt like pure energy@@Electron42

This the real entire record? If not mistaken, this record was known as EEP HOUR. Way before it's time!!!
At around 23:00, "He don't think so...,he don't think...,don't think...,"
My copy has less scratches but we dont think so

Mint condition vinyl? If that's the case, next time don't make the transfer with a popcorn maker.
🍿
ungrateful?
Don't blame the uploader just because your sound system is crap.
