Edit: Forgot to add, I'm thinking the reason the R3 is getting ignored is because a new bike is coming. I want to believe.
If they made a tiny crossplane I4 that revved to the moon, I could see Yamaha laying waste to the rest of the small displacement market. People like big nasty liter bikes, high rpm's, and the crossplane sound. But many like not dying so if they can get the looks, the sound, but still be fun & racey without the liter bike spice.... I think people would be beating the doors down for a little R1.
The R3 is fragile compared to any of the other small track options. I race with CVMA in the 350 Super Sport class. The Ninja 400 and RC-390 are in the 500 SS class, as well as the Ultra Lightweight class. In the 350 SS class the R3 is pretty much the easy button, but the Ninja 300 and the CBR300R are still competitive options.

One point of disagreement on a starter bike. Resale is the most important feature and the CF MOTO will not have that. This is a starter bike and the best I can find on a used starter bike from Honda or Kawasaki that is three years old, is 75% of the new purchase price. You would be lucky to get 50% on the CF. Am I full of it? Well I own a Hyosung that I purchased with 300 miles on it for 33% of its new sale value. The bike is not bad, you just can't sell it.
I work for Yamaha. Every time they announce the new models for the upcoming year, I ask our reps if they are going to make a 400cc. Every time, they say no. I asked why and they say that they feel they don't have any need to compete with the ninja 400. When I converse with them on why they feel that way, they never give a reasonable answer. They just spew arrogant nonsense. I love Yamaha but the fact that they don't even care to have a 400cc sport bike or a 1000cc ATV plus the fact that they won't bring the tracer 700 to the states really aggravates me sometimes.
The no Tracer 700 in the USDM really is a huge let down. The majority of other motorcycle manufacturers are selling 600 class "sport touring" bastardized ADV bikes like the Tracer and they are moving in respectable volume. I'm going to be buying a Tracer 900 (or Tracer 9 if I can swing it) in the next few weeks and I'd really love to have the option to go for a 700 instead.
As an outsider looking in who has never owned or rode a bike but looking to get a bike I think having an r3 is going to be good. I don’t think a beginner bike needs to be “exciting” or “sporty” I think low hp and lightweight and some what “dull” would be good. Guys like me need to build a certain skill set before we get into something a little more “fun”. Maybe I’m just overthinking it?
Disagree, the entry level category doesn’t need to get faster. A true beginner bike should specifically be slow and lightweight with more forgiving throttles to keep riders from making disastrous mistakes. There are less riders on the road than ever and yet fatalities are steadily climbing even with better technology and I believe that has much to do with the culture of starting on bikes way too fast for them. (Recently rode with a new rider that started on a m109…I told him to be careful but lo and behold a month later he totaled it after riding only 4 months)
starting on a old ninja 250 was the best decision ever made. you can't convince a dude not to start on a 600cc or something like that though, they dont wanna hear it.

Nice bro! I just passed my MSF and bought a 2016 R3 this last weekend. I’ve only had the chance to ride it home down the street but it does seem to be a good bike for starting. I’m sure we’ll both have better bikes with more features down the road
I agree with everything you’ve stated…they need to either drop the r3 and bring a r4 out or they need to upgrade the current output on the drivetrain they have now. Even the tech is outdated compared to the competition…needs a TFT color screen etc. They definitely need a 400cc variant.
Baby R7 would be lit. I really think there is a place for high quality, small displacement bikes. I don’t see the assumed correlation between smaller displacement & cheap. I agree beginner budget bike will always be a thing but I hope Yamaha goes full yam with upgrades in suspension & braking for these babies. Cheers
450 SS has been having an issue with the crank bearing going out, A lot of times what is happening is riders are really pushing these bikes higher in the revs, typically around 80 miles an hour. I see that a knock develops and the motor goes out. CfMoto needs to put some more research into this bike as I've seen so far in the past 2 months. 6. Motors needing either complete rebuilds or replacement
Minor thing like that? Who manufacture's that 450 engine? I know CF Moto sources the KTM engine for their biggest option, which itself is manufactured in China.
Interesting, thanks for sharing David. I've been keeping a close eye on this bike since its release & hadn't heard about this. It's a pretty big deal imo cause firstly if the pattern continues it's not a good look for their all new CP engine. Secondly it puts a huge question mark over the bikes reliability in the long term. Could see many unhappy owners in the future especially if the issue rears its head anytime after the warranty has expired. In Australia their new 450 MT adventure bike with the same engine is being released early this year, currently on preorder. So far it's garnered heaps of interest as us Aussies have been itching for a small displacement adventure bike like this for years & Cfmoto have really delivered. Any idea if Cfmoto have sorted a fix with a revised bearing so it won't affect their new adventure bike engine ?
this is what im talking about, they put a lot of new features on r15m, it even have track control and slippers clutch. Maybe they can change the engine in r3 having a a 270degrees, slipper clutch, track contol and tft display ,it would be called r3m, but that just my opinion, but what do you think?
im a Fan of Yamaha .My dream bike is R1M. As a beginner i set my eyes on R3 . I've been waiting for an update this year ,just like you said" a baby R7" .then India happened,Why Yamaha.we got R15M. Where's R3M or better R4M ?Welp CF moto 450SR it is. R3 cost around 5grand in my country add 200 more for 450SR what's the point for an ancient motorcycle like R3 2024
It's an insult that Yamaha built the R15M without updating & building a new R3M or R4M. Why the smaller bike better ? How they gonna put so much effort into the styling & tech of a 155cc single which looks awesome btw but leave the iconic R3 completely unrevised & ancient in comparison. It's annoying as hell.
I am BEGGING for a bike with power in between a ninja 400 and an R7. I don't want something as crazy as an R7 for my first bike but I also don't want something as tame as the ninja 400
You need to go for RS457, because CBR 500 and Ninja 500 are heavy and you wouldn't like it, Aprilia is a tad bit faster than Ninja 400 with more power/torque. If it's your first bike than understand that you might have not ridden the bikes at fullest so you need to learn.
The new zx400rr has sparked rumours Honda and Yamaha could release 4-cylinder 400s too. Haven't heard anything about Suzuki making a new gsxr400 though
however, R3 prices are somewhat reasonable on the used market as opposed to the Ninja 400. You can get a 2021-2022 with a couple thousand miles, bone stock for like 4200$. A ninja 400 with that kind of use is still going for MSRP. I think I'm just going to get an r3 next month after I take my MSF course, and just ride the hell out of it till I can afford to buy a bigger bike with cash.
Hey, I like this "small" displacement bike conversation and really hope that you will review and give away more of them next year. And with the number of them that will be available next year I am excited.
I dunno I rode an r7 once and it felt similar to a 400, just more aggressive. The torque felt the same, the acceleration felt the same. Honestly performance wise very similar.
New model? Why? If it's almost perfect... it still has a lot of design and performance to match all the new models that came out since 2014! I have a 2018 in my garage, along with other models... I wouldn't trade it for anything!
The thing is, young people who want a cheap sports bike will no longer have one to buy, if all brands move to the 450-500cc, there will be no market of cool looking 250/300 that should be cheaper. I have the R3 and I'm looking forward to the Aprilia arriving in my country. Not the biggest jump but my bike is 6 yeras old now.
Not bad for a beginner bike im getting mine next week for $5800 out of the door here im california. Pretty good price considering its gonna be my first bike
I’m honestly in love with the zx4rr. I wish it was a hair cheaper but I feel like it might be a good competitor to the R7. I’m not too knowledgeable on bikes but they seem similar to me lol. I wish more companies made bikes like the zx4rr
Since they got rid of the R6 and R3 through it may be great it needs to be upgraded. I say Yamaha needs to make an R5 with a 499cc parallel twin with a 270 degree crank. Hands down would buy
nice video i love the data and facts. but go back to what you said about EU laws, the horse power allowed on beginner bikes is 48hp for A2, glazing the CF Moto 450SS over R3 is crazy when its not even allowed as a A2 with its 50hp?
Im not trying to ask a dumb question or be disrespectful, but why does the giveaway for the r1m keep getting pushed back in days? Just curious. Thank you for the awesome content
The R3 engine should've been a cross plane from the beginning IMO. If not in the 1st Gen AT LEAST in the 2nd Gen update from 2019 onwards it should've received a CP2.
This is multiple videos now that you keep commenting that the ninja 500 won't be as good because it was stroked.....you do realize it's new engine still has a bigger bore than that aprilia that I'm sure you'll just gush about. It's a more over square engine design than that aprilia. Stroking an engine doesn't automatically mean you lose rpm capability.
Agreed. Yamaha needs to move to at least 400-450cc in this class. And give us a nice booming 270° twin note. Right now, the only bikes I'd consider are the coming RS457, the Ninja 500 (451cc), or the RC390. On another note.... what about the low-revving, bulky Honda CBR500R (471cc)? Take a middle weight bike that weighs more than a 600 supersport and shove a dull 180° parallel twin low-revving tractor motor into it. How.... Honda-like. Also, their CBR300R (286cc) is also very dull. Does Honda make anything that's exciting? Maybe their 750 Hornet, but that's not coming to the USA as of now.
The EU-Licence graph is not quite accurate. Minimum ages for AM is 15 (not 16), for A1 is 16 (not 17), and A2 is 18 (not 19). And with 2 years of either A1 or A2 you can then go from A1-A2 with 18 (not19) and from A2-A with 20 (not 21). The L plates are only a Great Britain thing, who have left the EU, and also has not been an EU requirement. Just like the CBT regulations, you can't get on an A1 bike without doing a full licence, or having the B-class (car) for at least 5 years and doing some classes (this licence is also not a full A1 licence). Having the B-licence automatically gives you the AM-class. The A1 licencing also has a power to weight restriction of 0.1kW/kg (which generally means that the bikes have 11kW). And the A2 a 0.2kW/kg restriction, which is why Honda's 500's are heavy and don't get more power. A2 also allows the restriction of bikes which have a maximum (unrestricted) power of 95hp, which is the reason why bikes like the Ninja650 or Mt07 are A2 compliant.
they launched it in India recently for about $6,000 on road which is not at all normal for a 300cc bike with no electronics and that out dated design even the new aprilia rs 457 is cheaper than that r3, what is wrong with you, Yamaha ?
i mean, with the manufacturing partnership with in China with CFMoto, why won't Yamaha extend it to technology sharing so they can borrow the 450 engine from CF and build an R4/R5 from there? The current CFM 450 engine is bulletproof -- it is an evolution of the 400 NK engine anyway, which was derived also from Kawasaki's ER6N when CFM was manufacturing for them. They just need to put their own mapping to make it a bit more efficient (the CM 450 engine guzzles gas like craaazy), put their own bodywork/accessories, an call it a day
I agree. I’m heavier than 250 and have a CBR 300 but once I hit 73ish the climb to 85/90 is slow. I never felt comfortable with enough to hit the highway.

r7 is also defunct, its the least powerful and most uncomfortable in the middleweight segment with very little modern tech. Yes it looks great but that's it, Yamaha really need to step up to become more competitive.
yo r3 costs 5.2k $ same with cfmoto 450sr in my country and ninja 400 cost 6k $, and motorcycles with less than 400cc are not permitted on express highways here.
Honestly your better off going with a ninja 400....the r3 has so many recalls, the ninja 400 is a great bike all around and way more speed you wont outgrow it as quickly as the r3. Plus they are always in demand and hold a great resell value I may be bias as I own a ninja 400 and honestly 17,000 miles in and I still love it... Good luck though on whatever u choose
So the competition is getting more powerful so what. Did beginner riders evolve and can now handle more power? Have motorcycles become safer and can up the power with no ill-effects? The answer is no on both counts. The R3 is perfect as it is and needs no power upgrade from Yamaha. It's already fast enough for the road,in fact too fast for the road. What is it now, a race for the fastest entry level sportbike?

People like big nasty liter bikes, high rpm's, and the crossplane sound. But many like not dying so if they can get the looks, the sound, but still be fun & racey without the liter bike spice.... I think people would be beating the doors down for a little R1.
They already had the R6 😂
@@justathinker8669 not anymore. Plus that's a 600
The R3 is fragile compared to any of the other small track options.
They still sell the cbr300r over yonder?
How could the Honda CBR286R (should be the real name) be competitive? May as well ride a KTM 250 Duke.
@@exothermal.sprocket with the right person riding it (not me) it can be competitive. The 250 duke would be the only KTM option, remember we’re talking 350 super sport, the 390 is in the same class as the 400 ninja, the cf moto 450, and the new Aprillia 452…
OMG they just announced the new re-designed R3 and it's gorgeous. Please get your hands on one asap! It's glorious!
Should just discount the r3. 5k flat out the door or cheaper.
If they did that I’d buy one today my local dealership has one for 5,899 with abs not including dealer taxes and all the other bs you’re looking at lol $6,350 out the door which is outrageous for what you’re getting
my r3 gets more compliments than any of my buddies liter bikes lol without the badge they always ask if its a 6 and sometimes i lie 💀

@@xSdf65409-not surprised when i first brought mine to work everyone said mine looked better than the other dudes bike which was a Blue 2023 mt07. Definitely a good looking bike but is a beginner bike nothing else. Next is R7 then R1 keep R3 for track since its cheap
Yamaha should do an R4 400cc triple with a restricted version for learners. It would be a mental thrash for the streets.
Quit and apply for kawasaki
@@FunniestFlicks I started on an Aprilia shiver 750 (90+ horsepower) and then a CBR 600, and it severely delayed my ability to learn cornering and balance on a bike
Yamaha really needs to launch a R4. It is enough now.
May as well go straight for 450cc as that seems to be the "future" of the class.
@@exothermal.sprocket 400cc is a "middle-weight" class license in japan. That is one of the reason they try to stick close to that number. Similar thing to 250cc which is the starting point of motorcycle compulsory inspection(thus making 250cc bikes cheaper to own).
@@JinroHz How does Kawasaki's late Ninja 500 and Eliminator fit into that? Both run a 451cc.
@@exothermal.sprocket It's more of a preference to conform to. Which is smart for Kawasaki to do, and a shame that Yamaha is shying away from 400-500cc range.
@@JinroHz There's regulations with MotoAmerica junior cup racing pertaining to engine size and a lot more, but Yamaha isn't in the middle of that pack, but the tail. Almost no one uses one, they all go for the Ninja or RC390...... mostly Ninja.

I agree..as of now Yamaha give too much attention to r15 having r3 left behind...I wish the r4 and r9 is really coming the soonest...
I just recently brought R3. I think for a beginner rider R3 will do the job. But it would be better if they could add little bit extra features.
But I am happy with R3.
Nice bro! I just passed my MSF and bought a 2016 R3 this last weekend. I’ve only had the chance to ride it home down the street but it does seem to be a good bike for starting. I’m sure we’ll both have better bikes with more features down the road
@@danieldesilva8659 I got 2023 brand new r3. I think I am gonna stick to it until 700cc or 1000cc
Yeah defo a great bike, ride defensively and safe my guy. It's gonna be a blast.
Nah man, it's not wasted if it was fun@michaeldirosa5292
Yamaha R3 is still the best go-to bike for me
For sure! Love this machine to death
Totally! that's like the much needed upgrade now!
Never forget r15m has Quickshifter, Trackmode, lap timer that's a Good Upgrade
im a Fan of Yamaha .My dream bike is R1M.
Small bore CP4 engine? That'd be crazy!
however, R3 prices are somewhat reasonable on the used market as opposed to the Ninja 400.
How long have you been riding?
@@mikes_channel 4 years
I almost feel like the R3 is forgotten about. Maybe 2024 is the year that it gets an update 🤷🏽♂
As someone that is looking at getting there first road bike, I would love an R4 with 400cc-450cc. However, if not I’ll go ninja 400.
Yammie has manifested it. We probably will see a new one within the next year or two now 😂
New model? Why? If it's almost perfect... it still has a lot of design and performance to match all the new models that came out since 2014! I have a 2018 in my garage, along with other models... I wouldn't trade it for anything!
got my Yamaha R3 2017 the beginning of 2023 and i absoultly love it I wanna get the R7 as my next upgrade.
We would love to see a similar video on INDIAN bike market.
R3 is perfect and sounds better then the ninja 400
0:14 mt07 is all over the stunt scene not getting squeezed out at all
Since they got rid of the R6 and R3 through it may be great it needs to be upgraded. I say Yamaha needs to make an R5 with a 499cc parallel twin with a 270 degree crank. Hands down would buy
I have a n400 & my brother has an r3 and he gets all the compliments 😢
It just looks better that’s all
Rc390 is the GOAT beginner bike
nice video i love the data and facts. but go back to what you said about EU laws, the horse power allowed on beginner bikes is 48hp for A2, glazing the CF Moto 450SS over R3 is crazy when its not even allowed as a A2 with its 50hp?
Yamaha made a huge blunder in India as Aprilia 457 and rc 390 costs less then the r3 now.
If CFMOTO's aftersales improve, Im gertting one.
Im not trying to ask a dumb question or be disrespectful, but why does the giveaway for the r1m keep getting pushed back in days? Just curious. Thank you for the awesome content
Maybe an R4 and R5 version are needed? Leave the R3 as is. R4 can be 450cc and R5 500cc platforms
They really need to slap in a smaller cc CP2 engine into the R3 if they want to compete.
The R3 engine should've been a cross plane from the beginning IMO. If not in the 1st Gen AT LEAST in the 2nd Gen update from 2019 onwards it should've received a CP2.
I just bought one this past Saturday. Great bike.
We need an R4
In line 4 baby
give it the R125 treatment, so a new look, a new dash, TCS, all the bells and whistles the new R125 comes with.
Idk what else they can do to a strictly 300. After watching the Triumph 660 video this feels like a shot in the dark.
Agreed.. It's been 4 years since the last update..
they launched it in India recently for about $6,000 on road which is not at all normal for a 300cc bike with no electronics and that out dated design even the new aprilia rs 457 is cheaper than that r3, what is wrong with you, Yamaha ?
In Indonesia, the Yamaha R25 (Asian version of the R3) cannot compete with the CBR250RR, even losing sales to the ZX25RR which is much more expensive.
How much does the 250rr cost compared to the R25?
R3 should have r15M features
Godbless all
For real. They should've made an R3M.
I used one on the track last Sunday. It is really fun to track but so underpowered

There are false ages. AM=15, A1=16, A2=18, A=20
Greetings from Germany 🇮🇹
The Mt-03 is much better for beginners due to riding position, and I went with a used Zx-636R as a soul track bike!!
The 155cc R15 has more upgrades than R3
i mean, with the manufacturing partnership with in China with CFMoto, why won't Yamaha extend it to technology sharing so they can borrow the 450 engine from CF and build an R4/R5 from there? The current CFM 450 engine is bulletproof -- it is an evolution of the 400 NK engine anyway, which was derived also from Kawasaki's ER6N when CFM was manufacturing for them.
They just need to put their own mapping to make it a bit more efficient (the CM 450 engine guzzles gas like craaazy), put their own bodywork/accessories, an call it a day
Not enough power for American roads even if you're a beginner. The lack of power is a liability on our dangerous highways.
Used to own a MT-03, the R3 has enough power for the US highways. I personally took that bike to 105 mph and I'm 6ft, 205 lbs
I agree. I’m heavier than 250 and have a CBR 300 but once I hit 73ish the climb to 85/90 is slow. I never felt comfortable with enough to hit the highway.

Would like to see that in the ninja 450...er 500.
You know, you could also look at the cbr500r. I have a cb500f and it's super fun.
Enough power, built well, hella fun. Personally it just needs a 270° Crank.
But a twin is never gonna rev to 16k tho.
I've been saying the same thing on the high price big 4 brands in my country on their lower cc 2023 model underbone category that still use disposable rim, cheap bulb, poor analog panel and drum brake, while the underbone china bike in my country offers cheap price that is monoshock, all led, inverted front shock, full digital dash with hazard lights and passing light, all disc brake and stylish mags.
I love my cf moto 450.. but a R5 would be a great addition to the Cf Moto, Honda, Kawasaki and Aprillia mix, Sorry Ktm... you had your chance to bring out the 490, But chose not to, so you get left behind for now....
The ninja 400 is obviously better but the r3 just looks way nicer.
r7 is also defunct, its the least powerful and most uncomfortable in the middleweight segment with very little modern tech. Yes it looks great but that's it, Yamaha really need to step up to become more competitive.
R3 they need to do something about the R1 lol it feels date af compared to a Ducati or a S1k.
Should make an R4 with a 270° crank for sure
If it also had a 160 rear wheel and R7 looks, the bike would kill the market just because of fanboys.
But I've also been hoping for a KTM RC490 with a 270°
Now that I rode the new Hornet and the cb650r, I'm planning on getting the cbr650r next tho lol.
Great, great, great review! Love the perspective and history.

Im still gonna buy one this summer! Its gonna be my first bike!
Maybe they'll use that crossplane twin from CFmoto with an exhaust tuned by a piano company 😎 R4.5
Can you make a new video about all the new 2024 Yamaha bikes?

A decade behind . That's a good thing
It would be good and unique if yamaha made an r4, 400cc 3 cylinder crossplane VVA with the power of zx4rr but lighter than zx4rr
In Australia and New Zealand we have that r3/7 its called the r7la and its brilliant except the price is a bit 😅 as it is a $1000 less than the full power version
