    Not really though, because it is a pretty crunchy topic if you're an enthusiast. Over our whisky exploration some of us come to treasure these facets of whisky enjoyment more than others, but generally - especially when we're speaking about malt whisky - it is favourable to us if our whisky is naturally coloured (no added colour) and not chill-filtered.
    It would seem, in recent times, there are a number of producers who have started to explore what might happen if they went all out and natural. Some of them may surprise you.
    In this vPub I'll go through a few producers who have taken an interesting step to head in this direction, and I'll be checking in to see if it's worth it. I’d love to welcome you there!

    Thanks for presenting another interesting vPub and topic Roy. When I first started my whisky journey, I didn't know about natural whiskies and the preferred ABV of 46% where whisky didn't need to be chill filtered to prevent haziness. I'd never heard of chill filtration and didn't know that colouring was added, because it isn't required to be declared on the label. Once I learned about naturally presented whisky from various whiskytubers and tried a few it was obvious to me that naturally presented whiskies generally have a lot more flavour and are more pleasant to drink. There are a few presented at lower strengths that still have good flavour but for the most part, once I'd tried higher strength whisky, a lot of the lower strength stuff tasted thin and watery in comparison.
    As for the addition of colouring, I agree it should be banned. I don't understand why this isn't already required to be declared along with the amount used as would be the case for a food product. Anything we eat or drink that has additives, we have a right to know what is in it and how much.
    It would be nice if one day, the use of caramel colourant was banned, we could assume that our whisky was naturally presented, and if it had been chill filtered that this would be legally required to be displayed on the label. That way there would be no guessing as to whether a distillery had chill filtered a 46% or higher whisky.

    Hi Roy, caught the replay Friday. A fab VPub. Being a bit of a Benromach fanboy they can’t do much wrong and I really love the 15, a wonderful malt, would it be better at 46% ? That Glen Scotia double cask rum finish is also a beauty especially for the price. Slàinte Roy

    Hello there! I’m still catching up the vPub I missed during the vacations and dearly missing the GWF weekend. I can’t celebrate a 10/10 because I went for B and now I’m looking at the map to see which 4 distilleries I missed 😂😂😂
    On the coloring theme: could you imagine a colored wine? Would it be possible to color a wine and just not state on the label?
    I do prefer my whisky to be untouched but,I also think businesses have the right to deal with their products as they want but, I should have the right to be clearly informed, not with some small letters on the back, but with clear disclosure on the front label.

    Loved this episode Roy; your skill of carrying an entire show solo is very rare; many pros cannot do this to the same level. And of course this fake tan should be banned. It is a flavouring additive; end of story. Scotch prides itself in its history and its ‘natural’ presentation of using only 3 ingredients. All dye does is fake out naive customers. It’s just dishonest and really is a scar on the industry

    Grain Whisky is splendid as well and neither forms of whisky should have that nasty caramel product anywhere near it, on their own or when combined.

    Also, there’s nothing wrong with refill casks. The liquid just needs longer and longer in the cask each time it’s used, within reason. Distilleries should own it and proudly proclaim their ages and cask usage and colour without justification. Hiding these things makes you look shady…

    Roy, it is obvious that if colour is added then it must be declared. It makes better sense to ban colour because it is designed to deceive the buyer. The fact that it may be bad for us seems a little disingenuous if one accepts that many things are bad for us, not least alcohol. As far as blends are concerned I see no reason to allow colouring and every reason to establish the principle that colourant is not added. If colourant is allowed, why not flavouring, why not caffeine or other addictive additives? It is a reaction not a personal criticism!!

    Air dried should give a less bitter wood flavor. Would be interesting to compare. There are changes in the wood over time with air drying.

    I would say that the recent Icons of Campbeltown from Glen Scotia and the Falls of Falloch from Loch Lomond represent a worrying move towards BS marketing and premiumisation. The mermaids and dragons seem inspired by Diageo's special releases and prices hiked up compared to the Festival releases. £90 and £92 for 12yo and 14yo whisky. The Falls comes in a fancy box and is 82 quid for a 16yo...not so bad but why not ditch the box and cut the price?

    Sadly, the Aberfeldy 15 Napa wine cask available here is 43% and not 46…
