Gasos are not a hidur Mitzvah neither is it a Chomrah. Gasos tefillin where made by the Alter Rebbe as he considered it the halachic standard in tefillin. The reason you see small boxes before the war was simply either out of poverty or comfort. His tefillin comparison is wrong as well his the sefer torah argument. Technology can make a mitzvah better, but it cannot uncover something that was completely lost.
