I bought the DeWalt cordless DA polisher and used it for the first time today. I’m very impressed with its performance.
whats its like now, 2 years since first using it
Have a Flex Gear driven Dewalt Cordless dual action and a Rupes Bigfoot. Detailing for 25 year’s. Do about 4-5 details a day in my business. I find myself using the dewalt 70% of the time. I have two 4amp batteries. By the time one battery is done. The other is charged. I can keep swapping. I love it for finishing and mild polishing work. It’s amazing. Super smooth.
Excited for this video. Ordered the da yesterday and just taken delivery this morning. For anyone looking to buy one, the cheapest I could find was eBay. There is a 20% off coupon at the moment. Worked out £135 delivered.
Would you have a link please.
peeps cant reply with links due to spam filters on YT. But search ebay for this tool from supplier powertoolmate using code PURCHASE20.
FFX have DA thats where I ordered mine from the day before this video went out and they accept the 20% code too
Been waiting for this one for a while. I think you missed a trick though not mentioning the fact that Dewalt is a household name. Many people will already have invested into the Dewalt platform for their drills and saws ect. So the actual price for the weekend warrior is between £160 and £180 right now for the bare tool. This is amazing value when a Das6 Pro is about £130, a corded machine and considered to be a beginners tool. Long story short is this machine is almost half the price of the Flex if you are already invested into the Dewalt eco system.
I did cover this in video and give you examples of rival tools that are cheaper and more expensive. But yer its true if you have dewalt battery tools already you can save lots of money. And the price is very very good. (was also in the video summary main Pros strong price)
DAS6 pro is not a fair comparison though. you have to compare 15 ml throw cordless DA. And DAS6 pro supports 75ml plates, you would need another machine with the Dewalt to give you that capability. bottem of market cordless DA kit is SPTA 150 quid roughly I think. top of market kit is flex 580 quid. Dewalt sits in the middle at 360.
@@ForensicDetailing Hi thanks for the reply and agree about the plate size issue. My bad if I missed somthing but I dont remember you mentioning the ease of access people have to the Dewalt eco system which I think is a major plus in my opinion. I'm not sure if the flex 🤔 has other tools available. I know your review was based on a like for like comparison but I am just getting into this as a hobby and the fact I already have Dewalt bateries determined wether I would buy a polisher or not. I literally just pressed the button on a bare tool version off Ebay with a 20% offer for £135.00 i just could not help myself 😄 keep up the good work I really enjoy your channel.
@@darrensaquaticsworld fair play daz all good points mate thank you for taking the time to watch and feedback appreciate it.
I just got one of the DA polishers for myself and am absolutely in love with it! I have had numerous Dewalt 20v tools already so I had 6 batteries on hand and only had to get the bare tool which made a much easier decision to make and I am very happy with the choice. Thanks for the review helped with my decision. Love your channel!
thanks John its a powerfull DA and good value as well.
I've had my 848 for a couple of months now. It an awesome machine. Was able to polish my Ram 1500 with 2 5AH batteries. Doing heavier correction definitely needs more. As for the charger...I think if DeWalt included their fast charger instead of this one it would help emmensily. I have it and can easily charge a drained battery well before the other runs out. The best thing about this tool is it's as powerful as a corded machine....which is heads above other cordless long throw offerings.
@Damon W hard to say.... however I've never had an issue with one battery running out before the other one is charged. It will depend on how you use it though... Speed, pressure etc. But it's an awesome machine!!
..🤔 I make only sunroof with heavy compound, 4000rpm and 2x 5mAh batteries.
Needs 10x 5mAh batteries for whole car with heavy compounds.
Just to add, Jon, in my real world experience with the 848, I've been able to polish out (AIO) mid-size sedans and smaller SUVs using two 4.0ah, and one 3.0ah batteries. Just barely. Haven't had to charge on a job. I do plan on getting some 5.0ah batteries, though. Christmas specials :)
Excellent level of information, John. Highly appreciate your enthusiasm and meticulous approach to things.
Much appreciated
DeWalt makes a double charging station. I use a lot of Dewalt tools myself. I have several of the drills, saws, blowers and I have both of these tools your reviewing. I even have the push lawn mower they make. DeWalt is a great company.
Have you tried the 3.5 inch backing plate you can buy on this
Thanks for taking the time to review the tools so thoroughly, really interesting. Would be good to hear your views if you can get your hands on the newly released Ryobi battery DA too!
This has been one of the best reviews I’ve seen for tools.
Unbelievable.
Bought the DA yesterday, lol.
Only a hobby detailer , and never used a polisher before. But my old shoulders struggle with a good paste wax buff now , so i have purchased this primarily for waxing and a little very light polishing with either autoglym or Bilt hamber cleanser polish. Really looking forward to having a go over the next few weeks.
I only decided to go for a polisher after watching your channel. You should be due some commission !
Any recommendations for what pads to buy to go with the machine ?
Keep up the good work.
I would recomend flex purples for cutting of single stage on hard paints or flex orange for polishing and single stage on soft paints. You could also look at the red scholl concepts ninja pads (use like the purples) and scholl ninja blue for polishing.
Glad someone finally reviewed these. I've had both the rotary and da for a while now and love them both. Only problem I have is the weight distribution when I'm using the fat 6ah battery. 5ah or 4ah is preferable for balance.
I was glad to see your reviews as I already have a DeWalt cordless drill with two batteries and a charger. Thank you for the excellent, highly informative review!
Great review Jon ,I've just got the ok for my first polish as a Christmas present I was set on the DA8 after you recommendation. However, I have a couple of small batteries and charger, so now need to decide which to go for. Is the only downside of the DA8 the cord getting in the way, or is the Dewalt a superior tool?
so the DW has a more agressive orbit. the DW is havier with the battery. And you will need 3 batteries really or you may get downtime. the DW does not support 75ml plates. tool only cost of DW is 180 quid roughly.
So really you need to decide if you want cordless or corded and if you want smaller plate flexibility.
@@ForensicDetailing Great thank you Jon, i'll have a think, as like you say being able to change to a small plate is a good thing. i dare say Dewalt will bring out a smaller machine, rather than a smaller plate for this tool.
At last. My van is full of dewalt cordless tools, been waiting for a decent DA from dewalt.
Hope its not too pricy bare.
Ok £199 amaz pretty good value, just ordered it.
£170 on ebay. Couple of 5.0 Ah Li-ion batteries for £47 but you probably don't need them.
This is a dream of a tool if you already have the DeWalt 18v cordless kit with batteries a plenty 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
if you have the batteries already you are laughing really some guy said you can get the tool only on ebay for 130 quid right now.
@@ForensicDetailing I think I paid there abouts to £165 for the dual action back in the summer and use it with the the flexvolt batteries mainly. Adds a bit more weight but it just keeps going!
@@jsouto77 same here even the 6ah standard batteries i have go for hours
Hey, take note that the vibration in the table that you put them should increse the noise meter. So you need to do it suspended way, not touching the same surface
Great review I have been waiting for dewalt to enter the machine polishing World I have all dewalt tools and will now be adding the dual action to them as battery on other tools make it even cheaper for me to buy. Keep up the good work👍😊
Your comparison video’s are always fair John and give bags of info, in fact on the strength of your recommendations I brought the Flex nano and da polishers not that long ago. I must admit I like the idea of adding a light to the polisher (regardless of make) but I’m not sure about the paint depth gauge and the temperature gauge as I’d be dubious about the readings particularly lugging a large polisher about to test the depth of the paint and then the the temperature gauge being corrupted by the heat from the machine itself, for me sometimes certain things just need to be independent. That said I’m not for one minute suggesting I’m right it would just be a personal preference of mine. That said great video as always mate👍🏻
Excellent review, thank you. I was trying to decide what to purchase as my first polisher and also was it worth getting the cordless version. As a result of this review I’ve just placed the order. Thanks again.
Excellent review very detailed and looks good for strong home user that it is very powerful and affordable . The DA kit runs $449 vs Flex Kit $566 . So your price difference is much better then here in the US,
I use the dewalt cordless da cordless, after 12 months of use it really is a great product to use, highly recommended.
The only negative is it can be a bit heavy to use.
I'm still on the edge here of buying one of these.... Not sure if it won't be too slow for bodyshop use.
Hi, great in-depth video John! Can I ask whats the size of the included bag? Is it the 18", 24", or a different size? does it fit in the bag with the battery attached?
imnot sure about the bag size but the one I got fits like 4 of these tools in it no problem.
The force is strong with this one. Rotation too.
Jon, having looked at these kits. The reason why your charger is not listed in the manual is because the kits are normally supplied with the DCB115 charger, which is a 4Amp. Dewalt sent you the higher 6Amp charger, the DCM116. I would imagine that this affects the charge times.
does it do at well lower speeds preventing pad stall always great review
The da will stall at low speed m8. They all will. As it's not driven as such
@@ForensicDetailing thanks again much appreciated
Great review. I’ve been looking at getting the 848 but as I have carpal tunnel the information about the vibration is really useful
I was just watching the part where your talking about charge times and possibly needing a third battery and second charger. You are very correct. I have the Milwaukee version. I hard use that machine, and a third battery is a must if you don't use the rapid charger. I literally just bought this dewalt version and got three batteries and a rapid charger. The manufacturer run times are ridiculous. If your cutting sand scratches out of a paint job like I do, you might get half a panel done before the battery is half dead. I always charge mine when they are half full. It's much easier on the battery, and they last longer.
That DA Polisher is a long time coming from a company like Dewalt. I hope Milwaukee tools comes out with one too, all the rest of my powertools are Milwaukee so I've got several batteries around
yes its a market that may well have been too small for them who knows. This touches on what I said at the end, I really hope Dewalt bring us more and bring some new ideas or pieces of innovation within the detailing remit.
Thanks for the review. Really nice!
I was looking for one in this level of meticulousity before I buy mine.
I ended buying anyway (the cordless rotary), and I couldn´t be happier with it. Super light compared to the corded version and super quiet as well.
The only 2 things I miss from the corded version: 600rpm velocity and M14 Spindle Thread.
Just a little curiosity: In Brazil they came with 20V batteries an the Spindle Thread is 5/8" on our version.
We still don't have the cordless DA Polisher from DeWalt over here, sadly.
Love the vids jon, would u rather use this or the flex?
Flex XCE forced rotation is my weapon of choice combo'd up with little PXE for intricate areas.
Just starting to look at “properly” washing and finishing my car and will be on a tight budget..
I’ve Really enjoyed your videos so far with reviews from budget to high end pros/cons...
I Have previously just “polished” by hand as I have no electric sockets close to where I wash the car, so cordless tools look like a viable option if I go to the powered polishers..
I’ve been looking at the Ryobi one tool (as I already have other Ryobi one DIY tools) - R18P-0 cordless polisher, currently going for £89.26 with an online store as a possible option, looked at some reviews with mixed opinions...
Speed range is claimed to be 2500-7500rpm with 8mm orbit....
What would your opinion be or perhaps consider a polisher “shoot-out” (corded/cordless, budget/high end)?
so the ryobi is 89 pounds. its also a 8 mm throw DA. If you have ryobi tools and the battery already. This tool on the surface of it makes a lot of sense and the price is great. Ive not used the tool but my advice is go for it. you will get like 1-2 years warrenty on it if its not good then sell it in 2 years time for 50-60 quid. I really hate cords now. I actually find myself reaching for this devalt DA a lot now.
Hi John. Love all the videos. I am thinking of buying my first da. I was thinking of this as I already have the batteries. If it is just for me cleaning my own car do you think its a waste. Will I be removing clear coat every time or is it used to just polish and wax with no correction.
If u have batteries then yer the 848x is way to go.
Regarding the batteries, are you realistically going to be polishing at max speed, with max pressure, for 30 mins straight? You'll have points of running at a lower speed for spreading material, downtime wiping down polish residue and changing/cleaning pads. Also, regarding the charger, I have the DeWalt DCB118 which is an 8a charger (2 more amps than the one you are using), which charges my 5ah batteries in 45-50 mins. This charger costs about £35 and is well worth the investment.
I think taking all of this into account, running a 2 battery system is more than achievable.
it runs out with about 30 minutes real time use not even at max speed and definetly not polishing continually. 30 minutes real time real world and battery dies. I tested this.
@@ForensicDetailing ok, no probs. Think I misunderstood. I still believe you can run with 2 batteries though, without too much downtime (if any).
Your reviews are simply World Class!
Another great video, ironically ordered DA last night! Glad you seem to rate it reasonably well makes me think it was a good choice given I've got plenty of Dewalt batteries. I've been looking for a paint depth gauge nothing to fancy any recommendations on a basic but reliable depth gauge for use on metal? Cheers
send it back or refuse delivery, buy makita forced rotation dpo600z with adapter for dewalt batteries if You have them for example
Great video to watch thank you. Can you use these for sanding too with appropriate accessories?
not really no the orbit is too agressive you want a specific sander for paintwork. mirka or rupes or flex do them not sure if devalt do this.
I've had my Dewalt DA for almost 8 months now, I luv it
Nice video Jon I was thinking to get the DA body as I have Dewalt cordless tools already.
Also spta have a cordless da for around £150 with 2 batteries and charger it’s supposed to be very good from ALIEXPRESS miranda detailing uses it and rates it
incredible level of detail in your review. thank you.
Great review Jon but the biggest reason why I will stick with my Flex polishers and tools is the battery system.I have 4 flex chargers but only need 2 as I can use the same battery in a polisher, drill or light!.
Price point on the Dewalt is excellent though.
Ha... I was waiting for this video after seeing them in the background of your last vid :) good stuff. Still using my DWP 849X, it is heavy but always gets the job done 👍
Fantastic video john! I was looking at one of these and now you have answered all the questions. #☆☆☆☆☆review
That flex blower is so under powered. What are your thoughts ?
Yes it is. But I love it because it does not blast dust up and does what I need. It's expensive as well but again I like it
Hi John, I really enjoyed this review. How does the Dewalt DA compare to the Milwaukee M18 DA? Have you tried/tested the Milwaukee? Thanks
i think its the same mate literally
@ForensicDetailing Thanks for the reply! Now I just need to decide which ecosystem to invest in as I don't have any power tools from either company. Which way would you go? Thanks
well in UK I think milwaukee is not so big. I went with flex because they have more cordless polishing tools and lighting and vacuums and blowers that use the batteries.
@ForensicDetailing Ah ok 👍🏼. Which Flex did you go for? I need a cordless polisher. Have you done a video on it? Appreciate all your help and advice!
@ForensicDetailing Just found your video on the Flex polishers. Will watch it in a bit 👍🏼
Have you ever reviewed the Shinemate ? Would be interested in a comparison
Great review! So would u use the Flex cordlessforced rotation or the Dewalt DA?
for me I stay forced rotation
Brilliant review, if you already have a selection of Dewalt cordless tools and batteries and you buy them battery less, it’s seems like they are a bargain.
The one big plus with Dewalt is many people will have other tools so already have the 18V 5a batteries. The rotary (bare) was £150 over Christmas, the DA another tenner. Both tools for £310 if you already have batteries :)
Where do you guys find these prices? In Norway im at about £500 for the macine, charger and battery.
Would love to get two bare machines for 310!
@@b1dikoe the prices are for the BARE units, look at "buyaparcel" or "powertoolmate", now these are around £170 each, in the sales were cheaper. Just shop around.
@@rockfan3299 nice, will check it out. Im buying a big Dewalt powertool package, so i have no use for extra charger or batteries.
Great explanation of these machines, I’m looking to upgrade my das6 to a cordless machine, would of been great if you had done a review on the Ryobi cordless offering too ?
I've used this for polishing ships bells and my god it does the job lol
Nothing like a shiny bell
Hello, I would like to know if the Dewalt DCM848b polisher can be fitted with a rotating brush to wash, mattresses, furniture, carpets?
Da is no good for that m8 drill bit brush is way to go.
Hi John, I know a lot of people already make requests and tools might be expensive for you to get your hands on for review, but I would love a comparison between the DeWalt DA and the Makita 18V DPO600 cordless DA. The Makita has a short throw but it does have an optional forced rotation mode which would be nice in the one tool for cutting, polishing and applying a nice paste wax afterwards.
you cant really compare these tools as such. Or its like doing a car comparison of a VW caddy versus a Honda Accord. its not really like for like if one is free spinning and other is a forced rotation primarily.
@@ForensicDetailing Thank you for the reply John! I am intending to get the Makita as I have limited storage space and having the extra capability of forced rotation on a larger cordless machine will be very nice, paired perhaps with a small corded SPTA DA for tighter areas. The Flex are just too far out of my price range, especially as for the combination you favour one needs two different battery sizes. If I get one before I see a review on your channel, you are welcome to borrow it for testing and review.
The BIG plus with DeWalt is that you can use your existing batteries and charger from your DeWalt drills.
send mine dewalt DA back after 2 days and went with makita dpo600z forced rotation-way better tool ,i use adapter for dewalt 5.0 ah batteries and fast 40 min charger
Very very in-depth review. Some great ideas on how to improve the machine.
At 44 minutes you went to dream land John 😂 all this would of course be great!, but then the batteries need to keep up EVEN more, luckily for me I have up to 9ah de W alt batteries + charger - being a chippy, so these would be really great value for the likes of me.
Absolute intrinsic review brother 👌
Amazing to see Captain Pickard from Star Trek
Xoxo from Puerto Rico 👍🇵🇷
I’d love to own one of these Dewalt. I already have a cordless drill and jigsaw that use the same battery so it make sense, but my other half says £180 for the bare tool is too much especially as it’s only going to be used on my own car (Honda CRV) So my question is: what is the best £100 DA Polisher available? I’ve cut it down to 2 - Auto Finesse MPX and the In2detailing DA8
Either m8 really
You should try the sealey cordless da polisher, been trying it for a while now and been pleasantly surprised
I've got the sealey too and was impressed with the build quality for the money 😉
Chaps can the 125mm backing plate be swapped for a smaller one.
@@andrewb293 not as, far as i know, thinkbsealey only make the 125mm backing plate
@@alanmac101 thanks. Only just seen your reply.
honest, proper, review thank you.
holy moly this was complete, nice nice. I want to buy a cordless DA, I like the Flex a bit better, but Flex only charger's only for a single battery. Would be a pain if you constantly had 2-4 batteries you needed to charge. Dewalt + 4 batteries + 4 battery charger ftw.
And the weight would suck, but the Dewalt would be a beast with a 12ah battery.
yer thats key DW = beast mode heavy but powerfull goes through charge. XFE = light, but less grunt less vibration stalls easier but runs for longer.
Im watching what i can with these but im really confused as my uses are for a boat ?
What would be best option for a boat and gelcoat being what it is and paint does the the same issue apply?
I can only afford one and have used rotary cord type but probably didnt look to hard at final results as was heavily oxidised ?
so I would go for the dual action mate. you can polish the gel coat like paintwork. degrease it and put on a marine ceramic coating.
Try the flexvolt batteries I have regular 6ah and i can complete s single stage paint correction with 1 to two bars car size dependent of course. THe unit does smooth out with regular use its just dewalts overbuilding and tight tolerances need to break in a bit.
You can buy pattern dewalt batteries for £20-28 just as good as the originals, I have first hand experience of this
Now this is a review… good job mate!
About time Dewalt came into the detailing market. Flex & Rupes are far too expensive. Might be in time to add to my Christmas list as I've been a good boy
Hello. I am a beginner and I want to know your recommendation, rotary or orbital?
Thanks for your video
Da mate see picking the right machine polisher video
Great review. If they could figure out the vibration issue on the da with better balancing maybe, sounds like a possible winner.
I have a Ram 1500 truck and I am noticing quite a few very tiny rust dots in the paint. About the size of a grain of sand. What would this be caused by and what's the best way to repair it?
that sounds like someone has been using a grinder near the car. and hot sparks have landed on the paintwork and burnt it. I am guessing though... But I bet your truck has been in a bodyshop at some point and they got sloppy (thats a guess though) you will struggle to get them out if Im correct.
With the rotary machine do you recommend using a certain backing plate? Cheers
I use flex plates
how are you liking the DA today?
Yer it's proven to be solid m8.
Hello mate, one of your old vids is karcher patio cleaner upside down cleaning undercarriage, where did u get the wheels connection on the patio cleaner from?
hey justin theres no wheels I just it upside down and thats it mate.
Great video once again👍🏻🚗 learned alot watching your channel so thank you for that and keep up the great work.
Thanks 👍
My apologies Forensic Detailing Channel, I'm way late to the party.
This was truly an absolute superb review. Your time and efforts are very much appreciated Sir.
A Dutch company called HBM has a cordless one as well, dirtcheap btw. oh and Liquid Elements also had 2 cordless ones...
I think DeWalt are just keeping up with the likes of Makita etc as they are more construction tools, they have to tweak it and if people have DeWalt tools it's going to be half price due to them having batteries and chargers and handle grips, very good review all the same👍
Great Vs review. The Dewalt DA can be picked up for £166 and two 5ah batteries for £110. £276 is a bargain.
Great review on these polisher’s
Have you ever tried the Milwaukee cordless 7" rotary? It advertises "constant power", so I'd be surprised if it slowed down under normal load.
not tried mate.
Have it, never bogs down. Awesome unit. Nice balance, it is however heavy versus the dewalt rotary.
ebay have a 75mm 3" pad backing plate. and a 100mm 4" for DCM848. I am guessing it is not made by dewalt, Would using the 75mm have any issues like counter weight not set for it ect? i do not own a polisher so would not know if it would work as it should. without a small backing pad it puts me off buying one . thanks
counter weight is a bit of an issue you will get more vibration and less spin but its ok. fitment is important Im not sure if it will fit.
@ForensicDetailing thanks for the reply. They do link to a UA-cam video to show it.
I'm in no rush to buy. It would have been more to buff out chip/scratch so small is better
Trying to find this model to purchase but I can't find one that has 5000opms on the speed setting, they all go to 2200
I've had the Dewalt DA sat in my garage for a couple of months now, completely brand new and unused! I think it's time to fire it up!!!
What a review! Really forensic
We're did you get the smaller polisher head for the rotary machine?
Flex power tools do all size plates m8 M14 fitment
So for those of us already using DeWalt battery tools this seems an absolute no brainer.
Just bought my Dewalt 848 and gothering pads and polishes now..
Good vidoe, thanks. Been considering buying the DeWalt polisher
That is very good news! Sad that the DeWalt vibrates so much. Having worked with vibrating tools like the Porter Cable, Meguiars and Griot's Garage polishers, I think I will pass on the DeWalt. But if large companies lies DeWalt start to sell cordless Dual Action polishers, that is a great thing for the industry.
Are they any that don't break the bank that don't vibrate much ? I have a dodo juice 240v and just ordered the dewalt DA glad its ment to be good Shame it vibrates
@@aaron-jd1ds I have a Torx 10X that is smooth as butter. It vibrates a bit less than my Rupes 21 ES and I paid about half as much for it. Both are corded. All my other DA polishers vibrate a lot. For that reason, I never use them so they are just backups in case my primary polishers break.
I’ve got a dewalt 848 and 3 flex polishers and to be fair the dewalt is a great bit of kit. It only vibrates at low rpms and is definitely worth a look.
I wonder if Rupes will move to Brushless, I wonder why most polishers aren’t? Makita and DeWalt along with most big name tool manufacturers seem to be predominantly brushless. Was looking at the new MaxShine/Shinemaster depending on which country you’re, they’re not brushless. But as a owner of Makita 18v cordless tools I pray for Makita to make a 15mm dual action soon. 🙏
they make forced rotation version ,had da dewalt and exchanged it for makita, yes 8mm throw but it cuts way faster than 15mm DA dewalt ,build quality is better plus free spinning mode for polishing
Thumbs up straight away for the trademark daft intro😂
Not sure if to get this or a equivalent size Rupes corded DA
if cords annoy you go cordless. But if they dont and you want to get nano polishers or 3 inche mini later down the line go Rupes. (btw rupes seem to be moving towards cordless as well)
@@ForensicDetailing thanks for your reply
I have a Rupes Nano and Rupes Mini
But feel I need a larger one for the bigger panels
I mainly use the Mini all over and then the nano for small areas and waxing as the pad fits in the wax pot
Thank you for the information. It was useful
Nice complete review!
can't wait for the review on shinemate random orbital polisher on battery
I doubt dewalt will do a 240v DA polisher, the days of corded tools like that are long gone. You have to remember dewalt and most of the other tool manufacturers make very few mains tools these days.
Hi, is that actually call random orbit ?
more typically dual action. But the orbit is random yes they can sometimes be called this.
