Charlamagne on Drake's "Summer Sixteen": You're Never Going to Be Jay Z

  • The Drake and Meek Mill Summer beef has continued on well into 2016 with "Summer Sixteen" and "War Pain" still in rotation, and according to Charlamagne tha God, Meek may have outsmarted Drake this time around. "I thought Meek Mill's newest diss record was fire, and I thought it was six months too late," Charlamagne voiced. "It sounds like Meek was replying directly to him."
    Moving forward, Charlamagne broke down the jabs Drake took at both new and established rappers on "Sweet Sixteen." As he assured DJ Vlad that "all these new rappers from Toronto want to be Drake a little," the radio personality also took the time to explain why he feels Drake will never compare to Kanye West. "It's like relax yo, you've never made a College Dropout," Charlamagne states. "You've never made a Late Registration. You've never even gotten a Kardashian pregnant." When it came to his Jay Z lyric, however, Charlamagne said "I understand what he's saying, but you gotta understand how that could be taken. You could be taking a light shot at Jay Z...You should aspire to be on that level, but you're never going to be Jay Z. Nobody is."

    Drake will continue to win because he plays the game like he reads the Art of War every night before he goes to bed. If there was someone to make the Jay comparison with as a businessman and artist I'd say he's the one, as a matter of fact he is the millennial Jay. He's not worried about Meek. Meek's dope but they're not in the same tier as artist. Drake's fan base is far more loyal and broader; Meek hasn't reached icon status. No one is worried about him "running their city" because their too busy fucking with his music.

    All Drake meant when he said "I used to wanna be on ROC then I turned into Jay" is that he wanted to get signed to Jay-Z record label, but instead he got signed by Wayne, now he blew up & has his own record label (OVOXO) now he's just like Jay... doesn't take a genius to figure that out...

    Drake don't need a college drop out. He got a Take Care....And hate if you want to but Drake is on that level. That man can't be denied anymore. Meek gets no credit for that diss because he sat on it for 6 months. You know how lame he look having to see somebody else's verse before you can write yours. That shit is lame point blank. Like really is your rhymes. that wack Meek?

    • @davincireincarnated684
      @davincireincarnated684 8 років тому +44

      Drake is not on that level at all. You make a pretty valid point bro I won't take that away from you. Meek replied to Drake twice with wanna know & the Philly Powerhouse freestyle. Summer Sixteen was a response to that track along with the Jumpman freestyle on the 4/4 EP. You're saying Meek doesn't get any credit because he sat on it for six months but he didn't sit on it for six months. He was replying to Drake 5 minutes after Drake dropped his diss. Drakes career is now fueled by hype. His music is no longer impressive as it once was. He's border line garbage. Any project that was released after NWTS is straight trash to me. Drake hasn't been in the game that long & you guys are gassing him way beyond his realistic potential. He's nowhere near Ye or Jay Z's level. If that's the case Justin Bieber is on Michael Jacksons level.

    • @guitarwinds
      @guitarwinds 8 років тому +4

      +John-Doe To know that Meek wrote his rhyme after he saw what Drake had and still Meek's bars were wack is a shame. Drake ended Meek with one bar, "You don’t have to try to say it louder ni**a, Trust, we heard you the first time". After knowing Drake was coming in with a bar like that Meek needed to go Full 2Pac "Hit Em Up" style on Drake. Meek looks like a clown now.

    • @XC777
      @XC777 8 років тому +3

      guitarwinds thats what I'm saying. Hell what rapper can't write a solid diss if he already know what his opponent gon say. shit give me 6 months and a cheat sheet and i can write some fire lol

    • @guitarwinds
      @guitarwinds 8 років тому +1

      After already dropping Back-to-Back, yes that did end Meek. Everyone knows Meek screams on records. See pretty much any video on WorldStar that his a Meek Mills video and check the comments section. That one bar from Drake hit harder than anything Meek spit in his rhymes because that shit was the truth. Truth always hits harder than "guns and violence" when it comes to rap lyrics, again see 2Pac's Hit Em Up. What made that track so hard was he was spitting so much real talk not just "Shoot em up rap" RIP 2Pac and Biggie tho.

      That's the thing when you grow up with an artist, you become attached. So really older people can relate better to our legends. Kids these days can KNOW of our legends but may never have that ability to love them the way the older generation does.

      As a "kid" in this generation I'd say their are others better than Jay Z..... Heavy D, LL Cool J but that's my opinions. The "kids don't know" is just some bullshit line to make yourself feel less old because you grew around a different type of music and culture. The same way teens who grew up in the 60s say about the 70s and 80s. And how 80s and 90s say the same about 00s music. It's all subjective just like comedy. We have our own likes and dislikes so we can't say others don't know real music, when the concept of music in early human life existed as tribal noises and chants from ancient civilizations.

    Drake is Number #1 on the Billboard 200 for Views and Number #1 on Billboard 100 for One Dance, for six weeks straight. He’s been Number #1 with Views for 8 consecutive weeks on the Billboard 200 and the only hip-hop album to do that is Eminem’s Marshall Mather’s LP in 2000. If he does it again next week he will accomplish what MJ did with Thriller. Michael Jackson was Number #1. Drake If Your Reading This it’s Too Late tied beat the The Beatles record back in 1964 for the 14 tracks charting simultaneously on the Billboard 100 and Now he’s the only artists in music history to have more than 14 songs chart simultaneously. Drake has more number ones in Hip-Hop/R&B history. Drake has had a bigger impact on the hip hop industry than Jay Z in short period of time. Drake was the first artist to put out a free album on the Internet and spawn two Billboard Hot 100 hits from the mix tape. He changed the mix tape game forever and gave the blueprint for underground artist to make studio album quality mix tape without a label and get national tour money from it. Did you know that Jay didn’t get a number #1 as a lead artist until 2009? Drake did it within six years. Jay Z says he’s the greatest because of numbers, but Drake has surpassed a lot of his achievements in a shorter period of time. Drake wants to be remembered as a great multi-layered artists and Jay Z will be known just as a great MC. Jay Z lives on his laurels from 1996-2003 after that he was past his prime. Post-retirement (2006-2016) Jay Z is Jordan with the 45 jerseys on. The Grammy awards committee is restructuring their whole show metrics for now on because of Drake’s Views success. Drake’s One Dance is the longest running number 1 single in the UK since 2004(legal music downloads). The single stayed number #1 for 11 weeks straight in the UK and is currently number 1. Jay’s main commercial accomplishment is more number ones than the Beatles, but that’s it.

      Ohhh yeha and you argument is very week, the music landscape is very different now so you can't compare sales now to sale from years ago. There was no twitter, Apple music. So people actually had to go out and buy albums. Nowadays you can just pay ten pounds a Mo the and stream any album and it counts as a sale

    Unfortunately we live in a time where you can call yourself a legend and compare yourself to Jay Z without being a lyricist, having no No.1's or classic albums...Drake is as average as can be and isn't doing anything new or innovative. All he does is ride waves and acts like a groupie to whoever is the hot topic. That pillow fight with Meek went to his head and now he thinks he is invincible, it's funny how he talks about revenge on Summer '16 but didn't talk about Kendrick or Pusha...he had to slyly diss average ass rhyming Kanye, Jay who ain't rapping no more and average ass rhyming Meek who did make it 1-1 with War Pain. He'll never be Jay, his music is and will be easily forgotten.

      I think Drake is in the same position Jay was in the 2000s whether you think they have the same talent or not, he is not a lyricist, does it mean he makes bad music look at the past 3 years he created some really high quality, critically acclaimed tracks. Drake has 3 #1s with Rihanna, Hotline Bling shouldve been #1 but if im correct apple fucked up the streams, Jay Z doesnt have a solo #1, Riding waves? Jay Z taught Drake and Kanye how to ride waves he invented that shit. And you should stop talking about pusha t since he sneak dissed drake and denied dissing him and drakes team made fun of him and nothing happened. I think drake doesnt like confrontation if its not necessary since hes the buggest artist and doesnt have much to win. I think Jay is more talented than Drake but drake has his own lane he created a whole new subgenre and hes doing fine, well see if he delivers classic albums but he definetly has a good discography already imo

    I don't understand how people could judge if an artist releases classic albums if it's still so fresh out. Drake is barely 7 8 years into the game if that. ('09 is when he really blew up) we'll never know if it's classic until years down the line. If you're still bumping every song on an album, if majority of people respect the album years down the line it's a classic.
