My Grandfather James Hayes fought along side Tom Barry. He promised Tom Barry he would name a son after him. He named my dad Thomas Barry Hayes who was born in 1941 in Boston. My name is Thomas Barry Hayes Jr. born in 1968 and my son is Thomas Barry Hayes III born in 1998. I have photos of my dad as a child sitting on Tom Barry’s lap. Great history.

I don't have many people I'd refer to as heroes, especially in this day and age. But Tom Barry is a hero of mine. I must've listen to this a hundred times, and I wonder, if there's any hope left, or are we gone too far.

In the Rising the rebels (ie, the IRB) had Major John McBride, a genuine military officer. McBride was at the breaking of the siege at Ladysmith, and told Pearse and Connolly that the best way to win against the superior numbers the British confronted them with was to "go Boer." And the holy feck, was he right!
Of course, without the genius of Michael Collins, that advice would have been worth piss-all.

Tom's recollections of the differences between the IRA in Dublin where everyone wore suits and carried briefcases and the IRA in West Cork where everyone would go long intervals between meals when you were in the Flying Columns, and sleeping wherever you found yourselves at that time. Also that every man carried a razor and toothbrush with them so that they would blend in with the populace .since they knew that a scruffy unkempt man would come in for scrutiny from the RIC and the Black and Tans.

Between 1919 and 1921 Britain had major wars going on in Afghanistan, Iraq and had intervened in north Russia. If that was not enough the Red army was marching through Poland with every chance it would join with German communists and lead to the communists taking over the whole of Europe. It might well have happened but the Poles were able to stop them at the battle of Warsaw.
The breakup of the German, Austrian, Russian and Ottoman empires meant they and the allies had to draw up the modern boundaries of Europe the Middle Eastern and parts of Africa. Lloyd George was in Paris for most of 1919 and running the British government from there.
There was also a very real chance of a continued war with the Turks who were massacring Greeks Armenians and others by the 100,000 to establish the new Turkish Republic.
If that were not throughout 1919 there were major army mutinies in Britain with thousands of armed soldiers taking over the ports. Troops in the major Army base area around Boulogne mutinied and other troops had to be called back from the occupation of Germany surrounding the camp with machine gun posts The police in some cities had gone on strike leading to widespread looting and destruction. Troops in battle order with 50 rounds of ammunition were on the streets of several British towns and cities and the good citizens of Luton burned down their own town hall.
As to the Irish war of independence - the Manchester regiment had a battalion in Cork, the highest area of IRA activity where it lost three men, two to random shootings and one murder. Its second battalion in Iraq lost nearly 300 killed men in the same period and replacements had to be sent from Ireland. I'm sure they were relived to get away from Ireland's legendary guerrilla leader for a nice place in the sun.
Compared to all this the antics of Tom Barry and his IRA "flying column" were nothing more than a nuisance.
