I always loved these big bastards. Seeing them at the Cascade Railway Museum, Washington. These fine British machines even made it as far as our American railways. Great video!
Something is stuck 😮 in steps gentleman with large hammer something is no longer stuck😅 The crane is one serious piece of engineering great to see something like that preserved and doing what it was built to do 👍
My uncle helped to biuld these cranes for cowansheldons at the bottom of our st in carlisle they also biult hundreds of dock cranes for aĺ over the world
BR were still using steam cranes until quite recent times, just before privatisation I think, and decades after the last steam trains. I saw a steam crane working in New York on the rebuilding of a ferry terminal about 15 years ago..
I was a driver at Crewe from 1975 till 85 I think our Steam crane was replaced early 80s. It was always in Steam ready for call outs and had coal fires around it during the winter to stop it freezing.
Very, very powerful peices of kit the railway cranes . Cowan Sheldon, Ransomes and Rapier , craven brothers just 3 of many makers. immensely powerful and quite a lot are still operating on Indian and sub continental railway systems. An indictment to how well they were made.Great video production and for anybody interested in acquiring more knowledge about them the Peter Tatlow books on railway breakdown cranes volumes 1 and 2 and I think a 3rd volume will reveal all from steam power to diesel hydraulic types. Cheers.
It seems to work in a similar way to a Lego mobile crane I built. The engine is in the rotating section and it sends the power down through the turn table to the under carriage
Omgosh it's a irl rocky from Thomas and friends Its ironic that us has a similar steam locomotive history but dont have as much in museums. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that a few us steam locomotive are in the uk
pity the railways are moving away from rail mounted cranes to road cranes. What if something had to be lifted in the middle of a rail yard? Probably not likely. Some road cranes have rail wheels that could be lifted. I’ve seen photos of VR steam cranes No 18 amd 19 lifting entire diesel locomotives, a crane at each end. They were still used in the 1980s until one fell over on a minor job which was probably user error and suddenly the VR no longer used steam cranes.
It's impressive to see these old machines still working and doing what they were intended for.. keep up the great work.
As a crane and hoist operator of several years, this is one awesome machine!
Goes to show how effective those bearings are watching it rotate so easily and for so long. Great video.
What a beautiful piece of machinery, plenty strong too!

Thanks for this as my late father built a 75ton version of the Cowan Sheldon in 0 gauge . Fantastic to see the crane in action 👍
75000ķĝ?
150,000 pounds
@@АндрейДонракон Hi tovarisch, that's 75 British imperial tons (2240 pounds), or long tons as opposed to US or short tons (2000 pounds).

As a kid i used to sit on the wall down st nicholas st and watch them biuld and test these crains plus dock cranes
Really nice steam crane action. Thanks for posting.
I used to see these being made in the yard at Cowans Sheldon in Carlisle uk. Still in action ,great.
Wonderful video and good to see progress on 73050s overhaul. Had to laugh at the stuck axle box solution! "Let's hit it with a big hammer"

Magnificent machine. Proud country- UNITED KINGDOM.
You're a really useful railway.
Amazing skilled workers. Follow the directions
You're a really useful engine.

Well I've learnt something, I did not realise that the steam crane could move under its own power, I always thought they had to be shunted.
Same here.
Isn't this the bases for rocky the rail crane from thomas and friends.
Really "old school" steam crane in the age of computerized robots!
F**k you
Those cranes were beasts
Such fun .Thanks for posting.
Es increible ver trabajar hoy dia una grua con maquina de vapor ;que Maravilla!
What did you say?
What country is this

do they own the crane??? cant be too many left that are self propelling if only for a short distance
What is the crane max lifting capacity?
40 Tons
what did they do with the tender?
It is currently running behind a 9F on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway while the overhaul on 73050 proceeds

Steam power lifting steam power. Wow!
At last Rocky was finally able to lift Duck out of the water
Rocky is not a steam crane
Actually ya he is he’s this model steam crane you see in this video
it does look like rocky
Anyone else notice tornado in the background?
where?
1:22 That is a serious beard!

THAT WAS AWESOME!!!!!!
Some lucky guys never left the sandbox very far behind, did they? Cheers from Oshawa Canada.
At .38, was that asbestos?
No, Ceramic fibre
J Wood Sort of favored asbestos rope we used to use to burn rail back together. Thank you sir for answering.
Nice!!!!!
That's cool. It be great if lionel made one
Flying Scotsman!
No. That’s tornado
Almost but shuffle the numbers, ;-)
