    This month chicks will be arriving on our homestead, and to make room for them in our chicken coop, we need to move some big hens out to our larger coop.
    Each chicken coop needs enough nest boxes for the chickens in it, and as we are going to be adding more chickens to our large coop, we need to add some more chicken nest boxes.
    In this video I show you the nest boxes I usually use on the homestead, and I also show you a DIY Bucket nest box that I am going to try.
    Will the chickens use the bucket? Wait and see in a future video!

      @@michaelmyers5027 I'm sure they work. Chickens will use what they can, and if that's all they have, they can use that.
      The question posed in the video was to see if they might like that commercial design better than the DIY design.
      And yes, it still will depend on individual chickens or chicken groups.
      So the DIY version is fine, but we still don't know if the challenge of one design or the other, was preferred by this guy's chickens.

    Buying a coup is fine of you want to spend upwards of$800 for the size you have. Return on investment will be a long way off that route. Granted, not everyone is handy with tools and basic carpentry skills. Its all good, buying might be the route to go then. Before dumping a ton of cash on brand shiny new, check out Front Porch Forum, Craigslist, even Facebook market and look for a decent used one. Lots of people buy and a year later don't want to be bothered. Chickens, (really all livestock) require work. Not something the average person wants to do.

    If you put the nesting box above the roost bar the chickens will sleep in the nesting box. Chickens will always roost in the highest place.

      No higher than 2 feet or so. Also, you do want the nesting boxes lower than the roosts to not encourage using the box as a roost. But don't place the box under the roosts. I wouldn't say there are any hard fast rules, but I wouldn't do it how he did in this video.

    • @JanColdwater
      @JanColdwater 5 років тому +5

      bev lower Plus the edges are sharp. I see ppl leave sharp and pointy edges on things from fences to all sorts of things and it is something that gets my attention every time. I think it is worth it to take the small amount of time to fix, rather than have to care for a wounded animal.
      Perhaps it would be better to tie on a thick branch or piece of wood to both ends of the bucket with twine and file all the rough edges of the bucket. You could even cut the cover a little lower, and have the branch just above it so there is a perch and a small wall to keep the bedding inside and being the cover wouldn't be used as the perch, it should, in theory, stay on.
