Making A Golf Club Out Of Osage Orange

  • This was a really fun build that I've actually wanted to do for awhile. I used osage orange for the driver head and hickory for the shaft. The head is glued to the shaft using epoxy. You'll want to watch the end to see the the club in action!

      +OffTheRanch yup kinda scary. I really wanted to show up at the driving range in full work gear and video myself hitting golf balls next to all the real golfers!! Would have been a much better ending👍

      He's good. Have you checked out Frank Howarth's channel? He's not only a really good woodworker but a fantastic filmmaker. He's actually an architect by trade(Harvard, I believe) but his films are amazing.

    Nice club man. And wood chosen for this project is just fine. I would secure that handle glue up some more becose i got a filing that it will fail. When hiting the ball much force is applied. Glue joint would be much stronger if the " rod" would be square shaped.

    That's awesome. I found some old hickory clubs in my grandfather's attic that are now wall hangers. Get a good leatherworker to do a leather wrapped grip to set it off!

    This is great, I see quite a few woodworking channels out there that like to explain everything they do. As a woodworker myself it's quite enjoyable to just enjoy watching him without interrupting to explain what he's doing. ( I do understand the appeal of explanations in those videos explaining why or how for those who don't know or are just getting into woodworking.)

    I recently made a slingshot from a natural bodark(bois d'arc, Osage orange) fork! It sinks in water and will probably outlast me, this wood is insanely tough, and beautiful to boot.

    I love your videos! It's crazy, you're like a future version of me. I don't talk much. I have curly brown hair. I like basketball, golf, and woodworking. I live in the country on a ranch and like the peace and quiet. You inspire me as a beginner woodworker to keep at it and maybe even one day make some of my own UA-cam content. I'm still getting my shop set up and have been accumulating tools for the last 6-9 months. I'm happy with the progress I've made on a budget while developing this new hobby. Keep up the good work!

    Very nice work especially hewing the taper into that shaft. Not a big fan of golf but there is something so satisfying about ripping one solid off the tee.

    Wouldn't the end grain hold up better to impacts? Or are they traditionally made with side grain?

    Pretty cool! A meter strip of leather would make a good grip and some scored lines on the face will give the ball some spin/stabalization.

    Cool video and I love the project! Was that a Lie-Nielson Dowel Plate? I was looking at getting one, but some reviews I read said they don't come out really straight. Do you have good success with making dowels or pins with it?

    Thanks Andy, question for you. How much time do you take in the planning stage of making an item like this? I'm a newbie and you make it look so easy/effortless, but I can tell you must have carefully chosen the wood, direct of wood grain etc. Any insight to your mental process "before" you begin work would be much appreciated.
