This is what I wore in high school. And let me tell you, in 2007, I was the only girl in a sea of fruity, cotton candy wearing a spicy oriental to school.
@@pinksalamanders I am much older than you but I only started wearing Tabu as an adult...I still wear it regularly! Ive been wearing Shalimar for the last 40 years, but I still wear Tabu as well. My personal experience is that when I wear Tabu everyone always tells me they love the smell. Both men and women ask me what Im wearing as they love it. I love sultry perfumes and they suit me.
Tabu is a treasure! As a broke student with a knack for vintage, independent and niche fragrances I feel blessed by "cheapies" like Tabu. It smells so unique, a bit dirty, a bit heady and a bit witchy. Perfect for autumn and dramatic outfits.
I have been trying to buy my Teenage addiction Chique By London Taylor's but can't get shipped to Me in NZ.. So I'm looking for switch to Tabu !! I love vintage
The vintage one does contain some animalic notes (at least to my nose) which may be the reason some people hate it. To me it smells like the warm fur of a giant purring cat and I love it for that😌
Tabu is a piece of my heart and soul. I own numerous editions and I cant be without my bedside bottle. I used to wear this every day and literally I swear got withdrawal and depression if I didn't wear. I use the tall bottle you have for my hair. I have a tapered vintage bottle which is much stronger. I have about 4 backups. This isn't a perfume it's a drug 🤣🤣🤣 absolutely adore Tabu just nothing like it... keep up your awesome vids. With myself being a serious perfume addict and owning over 200 scents I can still say Tabu is in my top 3 fav ❤❤❤😘🌠
I got this recently and fell in love. Alongside Calvin’s obsession for women these are my current favourites. Thanks for your review, really helped me decide to get it!
I had a vintage, pressurized bottle of Tabu, and you know what? It smelled VERY close to the contemporary formulation. 😀 The cola feel, the nag champa incense, the powdery orris, musks, flora, it was all still there. The only major difference was that it had better longevity, and was a bit more smooth.
LOL 😆 8:26 Tabu is one of my favorite fragrances ever. The vintages are even better and last for ages. Thank you for this review. It was great getting your perspective ❤
This was my grandmothers perfume and I remember after she passed a half used bottle sitting on my mom’s dresser. I think it was just too much for her. And I remember the one time I picked it up and sprayed it the vintage stuff was strong as hell. That stuff was potent like I have never smelled in another perfume. Now that I’m older though I am really tempted to try it because I love oriental fragrances. For such an expensive price your review. has inspired me to give it a whirl
Wow! You are into all those little oldies! I can see you wearing all of them! The trick is to own the fragrance you wear including the outfit and the attitude, which you seem to have.
I love your reviews too and your sass and energy. Your perspective... I enjoy you and I enjoy perfume!!!! I have a vintage and a current formulation: I wear both! They both (although the vintage is much more rounded and concentrated) smell like Smokey cinnamon, cloves and maybe a dusty citrus. I absolutely love it. Smells like an old Catholic Church. I love Opium and Obsession, Youth Dew, Ciara... but out of all of them (even my beloved Opium) Tabu is by far my most favorite!!!!
You should try the vintage. It's potent as hell. I think my mom or grandmother used to have it back in the '70's. I remember it being really, REALLY strong. Great review! Am tempted to try the current version of it. Other great vintage perfumes to try are Jontue, Fred Hayman's Touch, and Norell. Would love to hear your thoughts on those.
I have a bottle and no it’s not. The top notes are completely gone and only the mid and base are left but it’s also so weak. I have a big bottle of the vintage . The newest version of this perfume is pure cheap crap. I threw it away. Waste of money. I like the vintage version best but it’s weak and it pisses me off. I wish it were stronger so I can smell it for longer than half hour before it’s a barely there skin scent. But for the price, really what can u expect. I need to see if I can find a vintage bottle that was cared for better. Maybe it will be stronger. Still I like having this in my vintage collection. I also have a vintage Obsession perfume. Oh my goodness that one is a powerhouse. A dot on each wrist is ALL u need for ppl to smell u a mile away….lol but I love beast mode perfumes . Let them smell my ass on the MOON….lol get it?
The same girl sat behind me in homeroom for six years of school. We were seated alphabetically. The same girl wore the same perfume those entire six years. Every morning Tabu, Tabu, Tabu. I absolutely hated it at the time. Flash forward 40 years. Now I have my own bottle of Tabu, and I love it!
Glad you finally reviewed Tabu! I have always loved it since I was quite young, and I do not believe the story that has gone round that it was supposed to be a fragrance that a lady of the evening would wear. It is just a lovely Oriental. Do try to find a vintage, though. A well preserved vintage will be richer. The current formulation is watered down but still wearable, and as you say, the price point is very accessible. Jean Carles, Tabu's composer, was born in France in 1892 more or less at the turn of the century. He passed in 1966, a time of great turmoil in the U.S. and abroad, yet his Tabu lives on unto this very day beloved by many. Carles also created the equally ubiquitous Ambush and Canoe for Dana, both of which are still in production (I think). For the house of Lucian Lelong, Carles composed Sirocco, Indiscret, Elle Elle, and Tailspin. For Schiaparelli, he created Shocking. For Carven, Carles created Ma Griffe. Perhaps most surprisingly of all, Carles created the original Miss Dior for Dior----one of my all time favourite perfumes. Carles was quite a "nose" from a time during which perfumers spent years composing a single fragrance, but Tabu may be the one fragrance for which he is most remembered. Interesting stuff if you enjoy the history of perfumes as I do. :)
One of the best, I get the vintage on ebay for under 30 dollars! My mother wore it and so did my music teacher! So I wear it the winter and it makes me feel cozy and safe. Like when I was a kid! Long live TABU!
This is also for men , you have to try it and you will adore it. The longer you leave the bottle sit the better. For the price you wont regret it. We are lucky it still Produced. 1 day it will worth more than niche. This smells niche before niche Was even a trend
Tabu was the first fragrance that I bought for myself, I was on holiday in Spain in 1968 and it was a large splash bottle.....I did contine to buy and wear it until the 1980s but then Opium took its place lol
@@ouch110 Have you tried Café by Cofinluxe? Launched in 1979, Café is a lighter, creamier & slightly sweeter dupe for Opium. A very warm & spicy floriental with an herbal accent. So airy, weightless, a hot-weather oriental but with rather poor longevity, hence the reason I returned my bottle. Café was created by the same nose responsible for Must de Cartier. Quite cheap now but not cheap-smelling!
I wear 4 sprays of Tabu, with 3 sprays of Cloud (Ariana Grande), and 2 sprays of Arabica Roast (BeLayered Coffee Perfume) and people will literally stop me and say I smell Heavenly. That gourmand aroma stays for hours, very sexy, very alluring!
When I want to feel my old rich white lady tease, I douse myself in Tabu and Ciara 100.... Its the best headache ive evwr ever had!! 🤣😍🤞 I also feel that Ciara Tabu could be my drag name one day lol
I recently got this too! The new formulation is quite light, I was expecting it to be a hard hitter given all the hype but it's quite subdued. The drydown on me is quite animalic, salty, sweaty. I like it on some days.
I love this! ♥️♥️♥️ Tabu is one of those underrated little gems. Warm, spicy resinous and totally gorgeous. I have vintage Parfum and Eau de cologne, also modern edt. Get your hands on a vintage if you can, easily found and reasonably priced. As it’s an Oriental, the notes don’t seem to degrade over time, in fact they intensify somewhat! Glorious stuff.
The current Tabu is a nicer, milder 80's Opium which was my signature scent in the late 80's early 90's. Less baking spices & cloves which are so prominent in Opium. Tabu is a beautiful & classy imo, great for winter
Tabu is my all time favorite. I’ve just come into the possession of a vintage bottle and, although the old and new are different, they’re both beautiful.
Tabu is, and always has been, my signature scent. I am 67 years old and I've been wearing it since I was a teenager. My husband loved it and I've never gotten anything but compliments while wearing it. Tabu went extremely well with my body chemistry. I have the version in the violin-shaped bottle. Also, for me, Tabu lasts all day. I love it so much. Thanks for such a nice review. ❤
The first fragrance that I fell in love with! I was in first grade and the girl across the street wore it. I still have lovely flashbacks when I smell it! And yes, the original I smelled in 1971 was very strong.
So pleased you featured Tabu, Thomas. This fragrance is very me and I simply don't wear it enough but that's going to change as I adore it. Civet and all and both variations ❤
The vintage is soo strong. Really nice though. It’s definitely never been horrible lol, there’s way worse out there. From memory it’s like a dirty musk, rich civet, slightly sweet, patchouli, thick, very smooth. My mom would just dab a bit on and I could taste it in the air 😄 Overall there’s like an accord that runs through it which I can’t pick apart which is the “Tabu” smell. That seemed to be amped up in the vintage as everything else on its own smells nothing like Tabu lol.
You're right! It drives me crazy that I can't figure out what it is...buts totally Tabu. I wear plenty of Orientals, and can not sense it in any of them...weird.🤔
If I could eat a fragrance, Tabu would be it. It's delicious. I never appreciated it when I was younger, but with age comes wisdom. Wonderful review. For the record, I have had the vintage , but I may have had a bad batch, and didn't like it as much as its present form.
I have the vintage Tabu and really enjoy wearing it in the winter. If you love the head shop hippie smell then you will love love looove Molinard Musc perfume! It's the true headshop fragrance. I made a review a few years ago on Fragrantica under sallrw. Molinard Musc is a fun fragrance to wear out. I like to catch glimpses of people sniffing the air searching out my scent trail trying to find where that wonderful earthy fragrance is coming from. Molinard Musc is a fun fragrance to have you should try it
Oms I actually found a bottle of this where I live, I plan on ordering it soon. Thank you for reviewing an oldie but a goodie, would love to see more ♥️
The two tabu vintage bottles you should try is the small Violin shaped bottle and the wider bottle. Both should say Dana Perfume Corp. That inscription lets you know. And it is stronger. They are not spray bottles.
Question for your Q&A:. Please tell us about your experience working in the fragrance industry? Where, how long & in what capacity? Love your channel Tom
New subbed darling . Tabu is a masterpiece. Its not for newbie and it is for people who knows perfumes more than 20 years. I bought a new bottle for my birthday , and in Germany its sooo hard to find . If I find another 1 I will buy a backup bottle. All elegant and non mainstream women should at least have 1 in their Collection. Wear this as a signature scent. No matter the weather. Man can wear it as well and use it as a daily scent. Thank you darling for this immaculate review❤❤❤❤ Hope you give me a links to your review to cinnabar estee lauder and femme rochas ❤❤❤
hey Tom the very first oriental is Habanita by Molinard 1921 , Tabu came only in 1932. Great review ! Tabu is a classic . Please do CK Obsession 5 (the old formula of course)
I also LOVE oriental musks. Tabu also paved the way for Red by Giorgio Beverly Hills which peaked popularity in the 1990s-another fave of mine. Tabu is lovely & (kinda) reminds me of burning incense. It’s hard to believe that Tabu was once sold exclusively at Bergdorf Goodman. Anyways, I thoroughly enjoyed this review. 😊
This one definitely has that covering of resin quality that tempers down the spice/oriental notes as you mentioned. Dry down absolutely has that civet sort of dirty masculine note then the incense note sways in here and there bringing the ‘hippy’ experience. Lol. I totally have that sort of experience that you did. I really Iike it and I’ve smelled both this and vintage. Vintage is stronger and sweeter I think. Great 👍 review.
Yay :) I came to really appreciate tabu the day I smelled it on somebody else. It has such a characteristic and unique scent. I find it quite soft spicy and resinous and pleasant. Would love to smell the original too. What an era in perfumery..... I could imagine it might have been closer to something like Habanita originally.
I find it interesting that according to Fragrantica, people who like Wind Song also like Obsession & Tabu. If you prefer resinous, smoky scents with a Nag Champa incense vibe, sample White Diamonds Night--a complete departure from the original WD.
Try and get your hands on a vintage bottle.I wear vintage tabu every day and it smells extremely spiced. The new version is like 10% of the classic, I swear!!
Ouch110Fragrance, I totally agree with you about this perfume not being for everyone. I just love this scent! I wear it when alone at times so I can enjoy its fragrance and I would like to wear it all the time but I do feel that uncertainty about it not agreeing or perhaps offending some people, don’t know why. If I wear it outside I only spray once so I can enjoy it for myself even though with one spray it does travel a bit around the atmosphere but in a gentler manner. I sense lots of cinnamon tones to this beautiful perfume and I love cinnamon tone scents, so sexy! It was refreshing to watch your video and to see how you also mentioned that it is not a perfume for everyone, in other words. A few moths ago I went to the grocery store and I had sprayed about 2 sprays on the side of my neck. I waited about an hour and then went shopping. I noticed an oder lady looking at me with a disgust look on her face and I could not understand it! It is such a beautiful scent! I don’t really see this scent for a prostitute if anything, I see it as one of the most sexiest perfumes I have ever smelled. Being it is so strong I think a little bit goes a long ways. The way this lady was looking at me with her nose un in the air and nodding her head made me feel as though I had sprayed too much even though it was only 2 sprays. She looked very old fashioned perhaps the perfume reminds her of some naughty stuff but that is not to her liking. I agree if you over spray, like any other strong fragrance, it will be a turn off. I did enjoy your video and to see how you appreciate a good perfume. Sometimes this scent reminds me of a scented pumpkin candle, the finest of its kind. I just don’t get it how there are people that have these dirty thoughts about it? Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this gem, now I don’t feel so alone on this very special perfume.
Been trying this 4 the last few days...agree 100% about the dry down. You smell like u just burned some incense and still have the smoky scent on your clothes...not overpowering at all.
I always liked Tabu much better than Youth Dew and Opium. Tabu.. spices, insense, fur, clay/dirt .. Gorgeous - the reason I never wore it myself was that it was believed that blondes ought to stay away from dark perfumes, they were more suited for brunettes and dark haired women.. 😄
When I was a little girl(in the early 80's), at my church everyone had to bring a wrapped Christmas gift. I can't remember the details but everyone would be blindly given one of these gifts. I got a Tabu gift set...I was 9...I didn't like it at all and haven't had the urge to sniff it as an adult...Buuuuut this is probably one of the reasons why I no longer go to church.😆
@@marcilk7534 I KNOWWWWW!!!!! It almost off-sets the brainwashing from Sunday School...but in spite of all of the church non-sense, there were a lot of sweet older ladies that would bring in extra gifts to make sure there were enough to go around. I'm sure they didn't know about the prostitute aspect 😆
I have tempted to blind buy several times but in the end I was not sure (I had youth dew and I ended up overwhelmed). I have seen now at 11 euros. Maybe I will go for that...not that much to loose right?. Thanks for reminding me of this hidden treasure😄👍👍
@@ouch110 I bought a bottle! like the little girl with the curl, it's very good some days and not so good other days. Smells like my local new age shop back in the 90s.
Jasmin clove and civet, recalls the cheap perfumes in the 80s, associated to the prostitutes. As to revisit the 80s, those notes brings me more of the electric vibe of the era. 1. Serge Lutens La Religieuse (as a men I find it provocative and NEON) 2. Jacomo black (I look too young for it but reminds me of my school principal - I love to wear it still) 3. frank olivier oud touch - SO 80s in that voyage dream all three at the same time, could it be TABU?...
Ladies of the night please note there are also other fragrances available to stimulate the senses of your clients. If you wish to have a vintage fragrance with a heavy muskiness and sweetness about it this could be for you ! But do you really want to smell like your gran.or great gran?As someone who adored his various grans I identify this style of fragrance with them---strong overpowering top notes ,and not in my opinion the various notes that Fragrantica identifies. The dry down is quite poor, with a soap like fragrance like civet. It is not subtle. If one was being cruel this fragrance could be described as old ladies with a bladder problem intermediated through wet cotton pants. Its saving grace is that it is very cheap, but so is soap and water. If you want to play either a tart from 1932 or an old lady from the 1940's to 1980's this is for you.I note that some people like it.But I truly loathe it.

I use to wear this in the 70s as a young teenager. I loved it. Thanks for doing this review.
Molinard Musc is a fun fragrance to have you should try it
Thanks added this to my list
Oh cool! I will look it up for sure!
Oms I actually found a bottle of this where I live, I plan on ordering it soon. Thank you for reviewing an oldie but a goodie, would love to see more ♥️
... i bet it is white rose ... and i like all things musk ...
I wore this in in high school, on to my early 20s. I loved it! I’m almost scared to try the new, I don’t want to be disappointed.
Try it! I don't think that you won't be disappointed ❤
:) I have no reference point for the old one. It doesn't last on me this one but...it's cheap enough
The two tabu vintage bottles you should try is the small Violin shaped bottle and the wider bottle. Both should say Dana Perfume Corp. That inscription lets you know. And it is stronger. They are not spray bottles.
One of My Favorites!😊❤
Question for your Q&A:. Please tell us about your experience working in the fragrance industry? Where, how long & in what capacity? Love your channel Tom
Hi thomas always your choices are similer to my taste

My favorite ever! Was then, still is!
This perfume has gotten me 2 husband's and 5 kids. And lots of admiration from men and women about how wonderful it seems on me.
i love the this fragrance , especially the vintage
:)
literally reminding me baking our banana cake with generous vanilla our house smell yum
Thank you darling for this immaculate review❤❤❤❤
Hope you give me a links to your review to cinnabar estee lauder and femme rochas ❤❤❤
hey Tom
the very first oriental is Habanita by Molinard 1921 , Tabu came only in 1932.
Great review ! Tabu is a classic . Please do CK Obsession 5 (the old formula of course)
Thanks for the info! :) Ahh CK Obsession is not one of my faves unfortunately. :(
Great review! I have the one in the violin bottle, love it.
Nice one! I bet it's awesome.
This sounds like a bit of me , I need to try to track down an old one. If the civet is amped up then its going to be mine 😍
You NEED to if you're looking for something that will last you all day. The vintage is potent.
:)
Thank you! This was a fun one to review for sure.
The dry down is awesome, I am so curious about the vintage drydown.
I hope you do more vintage reviews..thx
More to come!
I heard a lot about it, but didn't know much about how it smelled like. Thanks as always 😍
No problem 😊
I have to get it for my mom. She will love this one.
:)
Lmao your little teaser clips in the beginning always get me hooked
Thanks!
So glad I found your channel.
Welcome!
LOVE Tabu!!!❤️❤️❤️
LOL, you always make me laugh in these videos.
I have never owned Tabu, but always wanted to.
You should!
l love Tabu .l don't know where l can buy Tabu from Dana here in Germany. Maybe you can help me. Happy Easter Sunday. Thank you for sharing 🌹
Don't you have eBay or Etsy there?
Parfyme-klikk.... it's all over Europe,, they have 66ml bottle
Tabu is one of my all-time favourites. It is timeless and polarising and dirty. I actually love it more than Bal à Versailles.
I do too!
I only wear Tabu
I love tabu 😊
Shalimar 1921, first Oriental perfume
It’s 1928 I think. But is it not considered and oriental vanilla? This one was more about the spice etc. Who knows? Heheh
There was an even older one in 1891, 'Phul- Nana'
Eliza Cosmetics ohhh grossmith! I even have some of this! Haha. It’s so easy to forget in the moment. :)
Before Shalimar (1925) there was Toujours Moi (1923, some sources say 1921).
Been trying this 4 the last few days...agree 100% about the dry down. You smell like u just burned some incense and still have the smoky scent on your clothes...not overpowering at all.
For anyone interested, Shalimar, created in 1921, was the first Oriental.
Super cool review. Could you please review Chanel Coco edp from the 80s ?
:( I would need a sample.
Haha. That is what my mother said when I wore Tabu at 14! To my nose the Civet was running wild. Through mud and manure.
Awesome review
Thanks!
Tabu, yummy
😋
Ha literally the dpd man just dropped it off I’ve just sprayed and I get patchouli straight away. Kind of head shop but I do like!
Yes! Both musks!!!!!
The dry down is really nice. :)
Haha. The irony of giving a perfume designed for a prostitute to a 9 year old at church.
Oh dear! haha.
Wonderful as always!!!!! Xxxx
Thankks! Hope you're doing good Rachel :)
I have tempted to blind buy several times but in the end I was not sure (I had youth dew and I ended up overwhelmed). I have seen now at 11 euros. Maybe I will go for that...not that much to loose right?. Thanks for reminding me of this hidden treasure😄👍👍
You're welcome!
I love that perfume
Well then. I probably need to buy this at some point in time. When my Opium is all gone?
Hehe it's cheapy enough!
@@ouch110 I bought a bottle! like the little girl with the curl, it's very good some days and not so good other days. Smells like my local new age shop back in the 90s.
Tabu BEATS Opium EDT and EDP in my opinion. It beats Bal à Versailles as well!
Iam pretty sure Habanita by Molinard was the first.
Tabu is iconic.
I wish they would re-make the original.
Love TABU By Dana.
Yes I get Heritage vibes
Jasmin clove and civet, recalls the cheap perfumes in the 80s, associated to the prostitutes. As to revisit the 80s, those notes brings me more of the electric vibe of the era.
1. Serge Lutens La Religieuse (as a men I find it provocative and NEON)
2. Jacomo black (I look too young for it but reminds me of my school principal - I love to wear it still)
3. frank olivier oud touch - SO 80s in that voyage dream
all three at the same time, could it be TABU?...
Thanks for sharing. :)
my mom loves original opium. do u think she will enjoy this one as well ?
Has it been reformulated into a lighter fragrance? Reformulations are so disappointing
I really like this perfume. And its so cheap. 👍
It really is!
If I can handle Jicky and Shalimar, I feel like I can vibe with Tabu.
I much prefer this to Opium or Youth Dew.
Mrs Press me to! Tabu has a weird dry down on me
:)
Great for chainsmokers!
OMG what’s next? Jean Nate’?! Old Spice?
Maybe? I'm leaning more towards one of the vintage Caron's as my next vintagey review.
I guess the clean part consists of after sex wipes. Ba-dum-tiss! 😏
I love it, my husband hates it and calls TAPOO
Ha!!
