Zakk is a monster of a guitar player, the man is very underrated for some reason but I for one get an absolute kick of his guitar playing with Ozzy and pretty much all of his solo work as well, the man is an absolute legend at what he does.
When I heard about Zakk touring with Pantera, it kinda of made sense. He did a great job of honoring Randy Rhodes as a sort of debut, if anybody could play like Dimebag Daryl and still honor his memory through his music, it’s zakk wylde.
I think they learned their lesson with the last two. Didn’t want to make the same mistakes. Zakk got writing credits and a whole career of his own from the deal.
They should have never parted with Zakk for Gus G. in my opinion. That said, Gus is a great guy and great player. I have one of his signature ESP star guitars. Other players who deserve mentions: Jake E. Lee for being a great player and writing good songs (even though Ozzy's fashion sense back then was terrible), Joe Holmes (who never played on an album but got Ozzy through the late 90s riding the success of "Ozzmosis"), and Brad Gillis of Night Ranger who learned all of Randy's parts in weeks and got Ozzy through the months immediately after Randy's death. Brad is a really underrated player just because of the pop rock genre of the band he's in. These days I don't even know who plays for Ozzy although he's collaborated with Jerry Cantrell and Duff McKagan among others. I just remember hearing "It's a Raid" and I knew Zakk probably wasn't on it because Post Malone was a guest on that track. But Ozzy has to branch out to other popular artists to stay relevant. I think Zakk would resist Malone because Malone is a crossover rapper/pop star. Zakk felt the same negativity about Dave Grohl at first because he considered Grohl a pop star outsider. I think Zakk threw some shade at Dave Grohl at one point for songwriting with Ozzy back in 2001. But everybody in the industry seems to like Dave and so now Zakk and Dave are good friends.
I had a connect and sent in a tape in '86. I'm sure it went in the trash, lol. Joe Bell made it next to Zack. Joe's a beast of a player. Lefty like me. I think they went with Zack cause he looked like Randy and Joe was more Iommi looking.
