    Two years ago, we put out a short personal project we worked on with an old friend who trains full-time as a Judo athlete. Today, that video has had over 200 thousand plays on You Tube.

    In a tie up you start to see a lot of ouchi gari and harai goshi nowadays. That and seionage are deadly. Wrestling has the "arm throw" which is the judo seionage but without the gi. Haraigoshi is deadly as a judo-for-grappling throw. Same with ouchi gari (especially since wrestlers and BJJ guys always crouch down very low).

  • @BandakaKush
    @BandakaKush 11 років тому +1

    I think a big reason for that is Judo is not practiced without a Gi or else it would just be Greco Roman Wrestling. Another reason is that Judo practitoners focus on the sport of Judo while the old school BJJ guys still focus their training specifically for Vale Tudo/MMA application.

    It's funny that most MMA guys want to discound judo, and say that BJJ is the only way to go. Which is funny because most of the MMA schools I've seen where I live has a judo instructor there, or that at some point visits to teach throws.

    How many hours spent training per day, how many days per week?

    • @TheJudoWayofLife
      @TheJudoWayofLife 2 роки тому +1

      When this was filmed, we usually trained 3 or 4 times a day, occasionally 5 times. Each session would be between an hour to two hours depending on what we were training...Judo would usually be longer, conditioning sessions would be shorter. And we'd usually train 5 days a week, but we could do 4 if we were tapering or traveling to a competition or 7 days if we had a training camp at the weekend.

      Depending on the program, we could be up at 6am for training or the first session might be at 10am so we could have a lie in. Typically we would do two judo sessions, a technical and randori, conditioning/cardio (usually running) and a strength based session. Food would depends, as I (David) would be dieting down to -81s for comps and Michael would be trying to bulk to -90s...but a lot of chicken, steak, mince, rice, veggies, potatoes, oats, peanut butter...the list goes on.

    Hey just wanted to know so you get any source of income for this? I’m an 18 year old thinking about becoming a judoka professionally so just wanted to know

    • @nicoladietrich8093
      @nicoladietrich8093 4 роки тому

      You won’t be able to start a judo carrier at 18. There is no such thing as doing judo professionally, either you are an athlete or not. If you wanted a carrier in judo you should’ve started judo when you were 7 and usually at 18 athletes have their first international qualifications. You can still start judo but not a carrier in judo. What fo you mean by “ starting judo professionally „ anyways?

    • @TheJudoWayofLife
      @TheJudoWayofLife 2 роки тому

      This was a constant struggle. We would do bits of laboring work for people we knew who were supportive of our training, we got some funding at times, but not much, our families helped a lot and our Judo Clubs would help wherever they could...but it wasn't easy.

    Today's Judo has nothing to do any more with Kodokan Judo.
    The rule set is horrible, no legattacks, no leglocks, limited Ground like 5 secs?!

    • @JoachimderZweite
      @JoachimderZweite 9 років тому

      dQuake Why not put on the old thinking cap. No leg locks because of injuries to the knees. When they were allowed there were injuries which are very difficult to recover from unlike a broken arm. No leg attacks because it gave wrestlers a distinct advantage against Judoka and enabled non throw takedowns to engage in newaza. If you have been watching any of the international competitions on yutube you will see lots of newaza especially from the East Asians and the French. Kodokan Judo retains the full repertoire of all the judo techniques including atemi and the kata performed with armor and weapons. When I was a boy I used to watch the old masters go through all the throws day after day teaching old and young alike and preserving the traditions but even they did not encourage leglocks or atemi strikes. In modern competitive judo certain moves are not allowed. There is a standing osaekomi that is not allowed because it can push the chest bone into the lungs and the flying arm bar plus armlock throws are not allowed. There are two great Judo techniques that the Kodokan is famous for - "Avoid Stupidity" technique and "Use Common Sense." There is a venue for the anything goes types like you and that MMA and PANKRATION where anything goes and Judo experts have done very well. There is also Brazilian Jujitsu which some regard as Judo with no rules. Why not try those sports. The Kodokan has embraced the IJF rules but Japan has lost its world dominance in Judo simply because other nations have long since adopted Japanese training methods and imported Japanese coaches.

    • @radioactivefighterwarrior3559
      @radioactivefighterwarrior3559 9 років тому +8

      JoachimderZweite There is nothing good in not allowing more kind of attacks and techniques, i don´t think Kano and the others masters of the old were happy viewing Judo as is today. The problem is that most of clubs are competitive, therefore, the IJF bans a technique, that technique falls into oblivion, because there is no sense in practicing something that you can´t do on a competition. If i´m into grounfighting or submission grappling why should i look outside of Judo if Judo was supposed to be a complete grappling martial art, throws, sweeps, chokes, locks anth more? It haves to do more with politics than anything else. i don´t believe the IJF is doing a good job, because the only thing that they are doing well is making Judo more and more insular. Sorry for the english, not my first lenguage.

      Radioactivefighter Warrior Go for MMA where anything goes.

    • @radioactivefighterwarrior3559
      @radioactivefighterwarrior3559 9 років тому +7

      JoachimderZweite i love MMA, but i´m talking on grappling pespective. I´m not saying that Judo must to be something that never was, but i (and a lot of other people) would love to see more "Old Style" Judo, when the throws and other takedowns were the most important and Ippon scoring, but where submissions and ground fighting were not avoided as you can see a lot today.

    • @JoachimderZweite
      @JoachimderZweite 9 років тому

      Radioactivefighter Warrior The IJF ensures competitive judo is safe and Jigoro Kano was a doctor so I doubt he would want his students maiming and crippling each other using what are now banned techniques. Also the last two grand slams I watched had a lot of ippons from Newaza. You can recover from a broken arm or a heavy fall but there is no coming back from a bad neck break or a bad knee joint injury. The take downs that exist in judo but which are banned are also used in freestyle wrestling so they are banned to keep leg grabbing wrestlers out of judo competition. You seem to think that techniques not used in competition will be lost forever - that is rubbish. Lastly Jigoro Kano's judo, while innovative in its time evolved from other schools that existed at that time. His judo is inferior to modern judo just as old fashioned boxing is inferior to modern boxing. I suspect we will never agree and do not contact me again.

    bjj IS judo, the time it moved to Brazil it was known as Kano's jujitsu thats why it took the name jujitsu (it was later named JUDO by kano). it is just judo by a different name, with a huge focus on ne waza. i tend not to listen to MMA fan boys as they (in a huge numbers of cases) are not true martial artists, just scrappers and wan-a-bees. MMA has just given underqualified guys the way to Teach "martial arts".

      form doesn't matter as much in weightlifting as it does in sports like golf. If a weight lifter focuses too much on their form they won't be able to put out their true 1RM. As long as the minimal requirement of form is met, it should do fine enough
