You can try to keep yourself alive but the actions of other humans are much more difficult to predict than the actions of the zombies, so that's why I think they'd had a much more difficult time, even if they're not even in the same group
Tbh them getting a lot stronger is very common too. I mean, take Fairy tail for example. A lot of the main characters were former villains, gajeel, Juvia, etc but a couple arcs later and they’re taking on enemies that would’ve been miles stronger.

For fire emblem it's sometimes the opposite too. In Three Houses, my Edelgard could one-shot every single opponent and could pretty much one-shot every boss too. But on the Silver Snow route when fighting against her, she's complete garbage even with a unique class upgrade.

A lot of the times when it's an "enemy joins allies" character, it's not that they get weaker but that the original group gets stronger and usually even surpasses the character. Zuko from Avatar. Hunter from Owl House. These kind of characters always end up being my favorite. ...and then there's "you unlock a boss enemy in a video game and all of a sudden they have the fighting skills of a small child." Probably the only time I unlocked a boss and actually felt like the character was still that badass from when I was fighting him was Vergil in DMC5.
You know a villain or antag is going to join the hero's side if they're way too sympathetic to be killed off. I like these kinds of villains. Goes to show that people have depth and aren't just "good" or "evil".

This reminds me of lokis redemption arc, because he literally had shape shifting and illusion powers and he was pretty strong in Thor 2011 and the avengers 2012, but for some reason when he redeems himself in Thor the dark world, he never used any of his shapeshifting or illusion abilities in infinity war when he was killed by thanos.

I know of an exception to this rule. Back in the day, I 100% completed Dynasty Warriors for the PSP. One of the recurring characters that annoyed me was Lu Bu. The moment he engaged me, I knew I was screwed. I initially thought he was programmed that way as an NPC. Then, when I unlocked him, boy howdy did he live up to his name. I tormented every NPC in the campaign as him. He was that devastating.
It's always when they're op too, cause it make no sense sometimes like a villain could train his whole life but the main character just spent 5 minutes fighting some minibosses and he ready to win 💀

Tommy was one of the few that had an excuse to why he wasn't as strong as his debut. At least in his Green Ranger days. Past that he didn't.
