Binged the whole series recently & this really make you appreciate what a technical achievement this show was. Each of the full sized dinosaurs is played by 3 people ; a voice actor, a suit actor & a puppeteer remote controlling the head, & all 3 of them have to be totally in sync to create a believable character
Anything Jim Henson related I always watched. I learned about how in sync they had to be when I saw the making of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back when they had to make Yoda look believable.
Never realized how crazy these suits were.. as a kid you just kind of take it all in as you watch, never really realizing how much work went into making this amazing show happen.
Apparently it was very expensive to produce which is one of the major reasons for why it got canceled. It’s also crazy how basically a two person team were controlling the suit. The person in the suit itself and the person controlling the animatronics in the head.
This show was extremely artsy and advanced for its time. And the humor very clever and not corny or childish like I would have expected. Very underrated
Still holds up after so long, currently binging the series in 2023 and not only is the technical quality and production so on point but the humor is timeless.
I feel this show was underappreciated back then, at least form a tech and special effects standpoint. The coordination between the actors and the puppeteers that controlled the faces must have been astounding not to mention the actors be in good shape to actually do their jobs in those heavy suits.
Never forget this day as it was my first day puppeteering Earl’s animatronic head after taking over from Dave Goelz. It led onto two of the happiest years of my puppeteering career.❤
Since my three years old has been on and on about "baby t-rex", I decided to show Dinosaurs to her and her 7 years old sister. When it started, they both start yelling "Not the momma! Not the momma!" I was surprised they knew about this show at all. There is hope in humanity after all.
@@kuaalname I think it was one of my parents who told me the person in the suit wasn't the one moving the face. From there on I imagined some kind of remote control being used to move the facial expressions.

Dude the show can still hold, it had an amazing quality with the actors and animatronics, all the team behind the show look like they cared a lot, i can't see any show that can stand just like this not to mention that they always tried to deliver a message at the end of the show.
No, I object. It'd be ruined with butt ugly CGI that would make Michael Bay's TMNT jealous with envy. That's why puppetry & practical effects age far better.
As a child, and even years later during the rewatch, I never considered that this are real people inside a suit. They were so unbeliveble good in charakter plus the animatronics. This show is absolutely unique and I'm happy I growed up with this!

For some reason I thought those were puppets... Not human sized suits! As a kid, I noticed that outside of the main characters, they reused the "models" for side characters all the time. And I didn't know if I was to think they were the same characters or not. Well, now I know why. Those suits had to be expansive as hell to make.
the show started with no intentions of being thought of as a "Kids Show" So because of that i think why it did so a dark finale. (I know that isnt really answering any question its just people always comment about how the show was a "Kids Show" even though if you really examine the episodes you could see otherwise)
I love love looooove that show! The attention to detail, the love they poured into this. Though cliché to say, they really don't make shows like that anymore!
The fact that they were so unbelievably expressive able to reveal subtle emotions made you really forget that they were just animatronic puppets and get absorbed into things
This was my absolute favorite show as a child! I had rubber puppets of the characters for bath time and I had so much fun recreating my favorite scenes!
"Sooooo, what do you do for a living?" "Well, I put on this giant latex suit and ... " "Wow, I forgot! I have to pick up my brother at the airport!!" ;)
