The fastest way to open a knife HACK

- The fastest way to open a folding pocket knife PERIOD!!😀
The zip tie mod is by far the fastest way to open a folding pocket knife. This is a life hack / knife hack that actually works! Unfortunately you need a knife with a thumb hole like spyderco, in order for this to work. This is one reason I tend to gravitate towards them. I could never get used to the thumb stud opening. Its just not as fast. 😀
The zip tie mod Is well known around the internet but is extremely underrated.

I've got a pair of work pants that have a fold in the side of the pocket which always snags on the thumb stud and opens any knife as I draw it (except Spyderco). Pretty sweet knife mod.
Brilliant. I’ve seen the mod before, but I’d never seen it in use. Very slick.
Yeah, it works great once you get the hang of it.
So it's like an Emerson wave.
The Alex square.
Lol yeah. I loved my cqc4 xl...
The Alex square I laughed so hard
Very nice! I lost my Kershaw with an Emerson wave on it but used a Dremel to copy the Emerson wave onto one of my cheaper, less preferred knives. With the Emerson wave and after cleaning it up and painting it i love it a little bit more...zip tie is a quick, good temporary way to get the same effect! Thank you
Never heard of it, that's nuts!
I have the Tenacious, did this “hack,” and it really works! Thx Alex.
Brilliant, thanks! I know that Emerson and Fox both make knives with a hook that's designed to do exactly the same but I've heard they're ridiculously priced!
Yeah I think they are over priced for what they are. Just my opinion 😀
Yes but Emerson stands behind their product you have an issue with the knife message them and they'll take care of you right away.
DPX too have a cut out that can do the same trick.
Kershaw offers the CQC knives designed by Emerson for about $25 on Ebay.
Kershaw has some inexpensive knives designed by emerson that use the wave. It's their CQC line.
This will work for thumb stud folders, too. I'm a thumb stud fan, so naturally I have a lot of folders with that feature. MOST decent folders these days have screw on studs. These can be removed with a couple pairs of pliers. I think having the thumb studs actually works better with this hack, as, there is less play in your zip tie hack as opposed to the big old Spydie Hole.
Carrying a concealed deadly zip tie might be against some local laws somewhere, ha ha. That is really, really fast. Thanks for showing the side by side comparison which, as it turned out, was not even close. I would have never guessed that outcome.
Bill
I wouldn't be surprised if that was a law somewhere. 😑 haha
I'm confused I'm confused how it ended up being the Spyderco tenacious. When I know for a fact I saw you put it on the Spyderco Pacific Salt H1. Did you not want to wear out the more expensive knife?
Good stuff. For a moment, I thought it was open before it left your pocket.
Technically its already half way open when its still in the pocket. Thats why its so fast.
Wow everytime I watch a video from you I learn something!
Another test would be to see which is fastest to get into a usable position, the wave/zip tie knives open quicker but you still have to reposition your hand after, this step is done before opening other knives. For me I've found them nearly equal, but if you fumble a waved knife you're doing it with the blade open. And yeah I know fixed blades are better for defense, but I don't edc a fixed blade so that doesn't matter to me.
In normal operation I don't have to reposition my hand. When doing it as fast as I can sometimes I do have to reposition. Although I always have to reposition on a assisted. I actually filmed a segment on that but cut it as I didn't think anyone was interested haha. Maybe I'll do another video 😀
I did this to my cold steel espada medium and it worked.......for a while. The ziptie couldn't catch most of the time. This mod is good for a temporary solution but i ended up sculpting a thumb plate like the one on the larger espadas with epoxy putty and it worked great but if you dont have access to epoxy this is good enough
1:18
"oh! It's already open!! That was convenient, thanx pocket."
But how does it work?
The zip tie catches on your pocket and opens the knife. 😀
Jesus help you...
0m3n 😂🤣🤣
I've been away for a bit and I guess I missed this zip tie mod, outstanding review of it. Loved the editing and voice over - thanks for sharing and top notch video as usual!
Thanks Kevin! I had some one ask about the zip tie mod but assumed everyone else already knew what it was. Just made this video showing the effectiveness. 😀
Very useful hack for the coming zombie apocalypse! :-)
The CRKT m16 does this by default. Cool mod.
Just tried this by replacing the thumb studs on my knife, it works well :)
Now that’s a good idea. I did not know about that and i must have about 18-20 Spyderco’s. Time to go get some zip ties. Thanks Alex
Its hard to not use them once you get used to the knife being opened as it comes out of your pocket. 😀
I oiled up my spiderco with gun oil and it opens a lot better with the zip tie. Really cool trick by the way, never heard about this one.
It works really well once you get used to it. Thanks for the tip!👍
The zip tie mod works with firm fitting pants but if your pants are loose fitting or pants material is a blend of cotton/ spandex it will not work 100% of the time. I had to use three zip ties on my
Police 4 knife for it to work but it takes practice. My Police 4 looks ugly with zip tie heads on it. I will likely just buy a knife with the Emerson Wave on it maybe the an Endura or a Kershaw Emerson.
wow mind blowing , pretty nice idea
Hi Alex
Fantastic mod Idea.👍
You just have to mention and show it more clearly that the ZIP TIE need to have the cut off on the left for left handed people and the right for right handed people..
Really make shore they cut off (the excess zip) is properly removed as you will get CUT..!
I actually get a lighter after cutting it off and with the flame 🔥 melt the cut off back.. safer then.
Thanks again for your this information..
I have subscribed to your as I have similar interests as you.
Happy New Year From Australia 🇦🇺 Cheers Tony.👍🍺⛏🔪🇦🇺
You know, I have never paid attention to what side the zip tie is on. Ill have to see what side mine are on. Thats a good tip! ill definitely be aware of it from now on. Thanks for the sub my friend! I really appreciate it😀
OUTDOORS55
You are welcome..
I am always open to constructive criticism.
Hope you don’t mind..
As we can always learn and improve from each other..
Cheers Tony.👍🍺🔪
Doug marcaeda has a few knives with a hook for that exact reason on his line of self defence karambits
my Cold Steel Ti-Lite Zy-ex handle opens faster. It has a built-in "xxxx" on the top. Have used it for years
I would use this but my knife I carry is a endura 4 with an Emerson wave
I’m assuming this can’t be done with a tip down only spydeco like the old military I have in CTS XHP
You did it again young man ALMOST to much common since just hiding out there to most to comprehend including myself great camera work you cannot argue with pictures in most cases. happy Trails
People will always argue, thats what makes it fun😀 Thanks for watching Mike👍
If only someone could invent some sort of knife that doesn't have to fold to put it away and maybe gets put into some sort of "pocket" made out of leather or something and then just attaches to the belt with maybe a loop of the leather. Damn, that would be a revolution.
@@mrdevonify hahaha
I watched the video a few times and I still don't exactly understand how the knife opens. Is the zip tie pulling it open with the drag of the pocket? Thanks
Yes the zip tie opens the blade when it catches on the pocket.😀
It snags a seam in the jeans like the Emerson Wave does. Same thing but a very neat way to add it to a Spyderco
Freaking awesome! I have zip ties and now I don't have to buy a thumb stuf
i like the idea however tip up is dangerous.. for me anyway. ive cut myself a number of times with tip up carry blades especially when im kneeling down working and i go to grab it out of my pocket.. ouch!
Interesting. I have never cut myself with tip up cary (surprisingly). I have had assed folders come open in my pocket though..Thats not fun!
I know you hate pull through sharpeners, but what if a blade is really dinged up and your just trying to get it ground even before going to a stone? Also, are pull through sharpeners angles right to Apex the blade?
Pull through sharpeners leave a very uneven bevel. I have never been able to get a really sharp knife from them. They just leave the edge too raged. Ill be doing a video on them soon😀
OUTDOORS55 thank you, I just didn't know if it would be good to take out large dings, I have the same 15 dollar stones you just reviewed and it seems even the roughest one (their180 grit)takes forever if there's any dings in it. I'm thinking of getting a diamond stone just for the deep dings.
I can't wait for your next video
Definitely get a good low grit diamond over a pull through, Otherwise you will still see all those chatter marks in the blade as well as have large chunks missing when you sharpen properly. I recently tried using one again after seeing a video saying that the are not THAT bad and ended up chipping the edge of my knife.
Emerson openers do the same thing
How about using a dremel & grinding a hook in the top of the blade, DIY Emerson Wave.
It is very fast, when I first got my Tenacious I used it for a couple of days but it felt gimmicky, when I pulled out my knife in public it felt weird to have it snapped right open so I removed them, I dont really know an application where you'd really NEED your knife open that fast
Its not only about the speed but the ease of opening. If you need to cut something while holding something heavy over your head it comes in handy. Think holding a piece of drywall over your head and needing something to cut back a piece of insulation quickly. Lots of scenarios like this I do everyday. Thanks for the comment😀
crkt m21-14sf has a double flipper. its what i carry. i carry it tip up for this very reason. pull it out of my pocket ready to rock
Yep, same concept. 😀👍
Can't believe I never thought of that. 🤦♂️ Of all the little adjustments & inventions I make! 🤦♀️
Is this legal?
What are your thoughts on DMT stones and what would you recommend for a set of three stones to get started with that aren't super pricey? Thanks and keep up the good work. If it werent for you, my blades wouldnt be this sharp;p
Never used dmt stones. King stones are pretty cheap and used by lots of people. Even cheap stones from amazon work if your really on a budged. Thanks for watching I really appreciate it😀
DMT stones are great. They cut very fast and never need flattening. They also dont wear out unless you are putting a lot of pressure on them. If you want DMT I would reccommend getting one of the smaller combo ones to start out if your only doing pocket knives. I would look for 600 grit and something lower. And maybe get a different kind of stone to finish. DMT uses the american ANSI grit standard which differs from the japanese rating. So a DMT 600 is about equlivent to a japanese 1000 grit stone.
Maybe design the first knife with. A hook??
Thanks man!
most officers are not going to put you in jail for pocket knife. accessed or not. great video bro.
Wel thought vid as usual
Would you consider doing a video about a mora knife
Yes I will be doing a video on them soon😀
So every time you pull out the knife you rip your pocket a little. Also, even though it is open, it doesn't mean you are ready to deploy it in a defensive posture. You still have to change your grip, which pretty much renders any hypothetical gains here moot. In fact, to facilitate this "fast draw" you appear to be holding your knife unsecurely with two fingers.
No change in grip necessary. Some of these I did change grip due to me trying to get the fastest time. However in normal operation I don't. I filmed a sequence on that but cut it as I didn't think it was interesting haha. This is by far faster in any situation for me. Your mileage may vary.😀
mountainhobo You don’t have to change grip, I have been using a waved knife for a some time and every time I pull it out it’s in a perfect grip to cut. That being said it does ware your pocket but haven’t ripped a pair yet.
Show slow mo HOW ZIP TIE WORKS... WHAT IS IT ACTUALLY DOING.
OR WHAT ARE YOU CATCHING TO OPEN IT
The zip tie catches on the pocket and opens the blade as you pull it out.
You need to investigate the Emerson Wave, available incidentally on some Kershaws.
he showed that in the video both an emerson wave kershaw and spyderco
What about the Emerson wave?
Doug marcaida dart karambut has a hook on the blade for that
Kershaw speedsafe. Super fast
Still not as fast😀
Gotta open it fast to threaten all the people laughing at your zip tie
No one is laughing
Seeing as you even showed the spiderco with the wave feature, I’m confused. Guess it’s a joke.
Yeah it's a joke. Sometimes my dry sense of humor doesn't come across too well😉
Faster than his shadow!
gotta tru this on mine thx! I'll post video if/when I try it
This is more initiative for me to get a new Benchmade or finally another spyderco with a thumb hole😏👍
haha 👍
hey could someone help me out with this, i got a kershaw skyline, i absolutely love that knife, the shape is great and all, but constantly need to resharp the edge, would the 8Cr13Mov steel of the spyderco be a ig improvement over the scandvik steel? whats the best affordable steel for a edc?
Spyderco does a good job with their 8cr13mov. I'm not sure you would see a huge improvement though. It really depends on what your cutting and the angle it's sharpened at. So it's really hard to say.
OUTDOORS55 supposedly the heat treatment can make a big difference too. I believe it was cutlerylover who said Buck gets far superior edge retention on softer steels due to their excellent heat treatment
Yeah I have a video where I talk about that. Your definitely right though 😀👍
Also that's what I was referring to when I said they "do a good job with their 8cr13mov"😀
In my experience, the zip tie can fall off without warning.
Opinion on Coldstreel knives?
Some are good. Some aren't as good.
any recommendations ?
Anything with the triad lock from cold steel. Some of their steels are not super good but the lock is probably the strongest out there.
What about Spartan? The new one, this 21c something something steel? It has this thumb plate, instead of vawe...
Looks like he's intentionally moving slow with the kershaw blur
Nice vid
Thanks😀
How does it work tho
The zip tie catches on your pocket and swings the blade out.
OUTDOORS55 okay thanks
🤦♂️
Not hard to dremel a hook in. Or just make the finger hole into a catch
I used to be interested in Emerson wave opening style, but I noticed my pants will be destroyed easily.
Now that bonfire is gonna be started in no time at all, not to talk about opening that post package.
veri help
Everyone subscribe to his channel. He has the best knife videos!
Thank you for the kind words😀
but...
*'* _______ *'*
I don't wear pants
My fixed blade knife deploys faster
Does it open automatically or the zip tie just makes it easier to flip open
Yeah that's awesome but is having a 3 cent zip tie on the blade of your EDC not silly shit?
I'll use this method for when WW3 starts. While the U.S. is being blown up by north korea, the troops will come knocking on my door. The ziptie mod will save my ass! thanks :P
Well considering North Korea will never blow up the us or ever have any troops over here this mod is pretty useless for you😉
true .-. they wont have troops here but they could potentially blow us up -.-
That just 2 cool
NutnFancy is a big fan of the zip tie mod also... Cool video thanks...
Awesome! But sadfully illegal in germany :/
Knusperschoklis Therefore you can cary a fixed blade up to 12cm blade length, legally. As long as it's not a dagger (2 sides sharpened) or a combat or hunting knife.
Which is ready to be used as soon as you draw it.
Check "Waffengesetz Paragraph 42"
Living Grim i know :) morakniv 👌🏻 but they arent Handy like a folding knife
Knusperschoklis Depends on your needs, I guess.
I prefer fixed knifes.
Each their own. :)
basically dıy Emerson wave
But look how bad it has torn up your pocket.
a great way to ruin your good pants !! i modded my tenacious so it can do the inertia opening... inertia opening rules !!!!!
The fastest draw in the West?
haha maybe😀
just do not get caught with it on your knife
Emerson!😀
Haha! I know about Emerson. Never owned one but have some friends who have, and they kinda steered me away for various reasons. Personally I think they are way overpriced for what they are. Just my opinion, don’t hate😀😉
Is it just me or does he look like Bill Nye
Not the video's subject but im thinking is it possible and safe sharpening with an angle grinder?
Possible, and safe if done right, but you're looking at a 300-grit edge at best. So probably not worth it if you're a knife enthusiast.
Also, if you're going to try be very careful to keep the steel cool. Dip it in water after each pass, otherwise you could damage the heat-treat on your blade.
I wouldn't use an angle grinder for knife sharpening. Not enough control.
An angle grinder is pretty hardcore. Just get some sandpaper or a stone
Karambits have hooks but they're a bitch to sharpen
me pregunto por que alguien quisiera sacar rápido una navaja del bolsillo si no es para hacer daño a alguien?? ¬¬
Si tiene algo pesado en una mano y necesita una herramienta de corte lo más rápido posible.
Knife laws are so stupid
You know what's better for protection? Ball/muff punting.
But you can't cut rope using that method 😉
This mod will quickly tear up your pocket. What's the hurry?are you using a knife as self defense? I doubt it.
Torn up pockets are a fashion statement. And you would be surprised.
Well it may be a fashion statement, but with the price of Levi's these days I think I'd rather be out of style.
Or just be a savage and carry a fuckin sword
I carry in my back pocket (right side). Zip tie no es bueno. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It still works in the back pocket. I do it all the time.🙂
Hate lol. I've seen a cheap knife on gearbest with a hook on it.
I like how you made a whole video but didn’t explain the logistics of how it works. Terrible!
If you can't figure out how this works knives are not for you.
@@OUTDOORS55 savage 🤣
Just a heads up, if you don't deploy it correctly you'll cut your leg open. I almost cut my own ass in half while trying this mod on my manix 2... Never again, not worth it. Luckily the blade only ripped a hole in my pants and not in my leg.
Wow, never heard of that. Thanks for the heads up👍
Eastman137 - how??
Brock Nasty - Man, I'm not even exactly sure how it happened. I guess you have to make really sure you pull the knife straight up out of your pocket, and not in a "downward and back"-motion like I did.
@@OUTDOORS55 I carry a CS VOYAGER TANTO PE. NO MODS...one day in Wal-Mart an old friend asked what I was carrying and I stuck my thumb into the pocket and wrapped my hand around the clip to pull. Little did I know that somehow that razor had partially opened on the seams of my jeans. It laid my thumb open with very little pressure. Tip down RS carry. Ever since this kind of thing makes me nervous. My daughter did the same thing with her SOG
