The Russians (with some American, French, and British support) used torture on some, non violent interrogation on others, and blackmail on still others to verify what what being said at the trials. When it didn't add up they dug deeper. Some of those given light sentences at the trials were later hanged/shot when the truth was revealed. More often than not it was the Americans that carried out the death sentence. Back then we took our oaths seriously, so when you swore to tell the truth and didn't at a war crimes trial...any lie meant a death sentence. The Smithsonian used to have an exhibit on the death sentences carried out after the trials. It was taken down for being "insensitive".
Many uncomfortable truths get hidden and swept under the rug.
