    Our grandson has reflux but he was a preemie. But I also believe he is lactose intolerant but they want to keep him on a product that has lactose so I put lactose dropped in his formula. That seems to help with some of the gas but preemies have digestive problems.
    I want to put him on probiotics because reflux medication is not good for anyone let alone babies. It robs the body of magnesium and will eventually create more problems.
    Sometimes they just need simethicone drops.
    Just to remember to do the bicycle trick if they are gassy and in pain.
    Article on baby Reflux meds-
    If your baby or toddler is using reflux medicine, maybe it’s time to quit. Here’s why, and how.
    This is one of my least favorite findings in a little one’s history. Why? Because the longer reflux medicines are used, the weaker a child’s digestion becomes. The weaker your baby’s digestion becomes, the harder it is to absorb food and nutrients. This creates a domino effect of trouble! Just click through this FDA powerpoint presentation to the Pediatric Advisory Committee to see what I mean. From fractures to fecal impactions, it’s not pretty. A
    Most parents report to me that reflux medicine seems to help a little at first, especially for quelling colic and crying. But soon, the benefit fades.
    Then the baby becomes more picky, appetite more sluggish, stools more constipated and slow, belly more bloated. Feeding gets harder, not easier - and the reflux medicine dose goes up. After a few months, we have a fussy eater who is having tantrums about feeding, who is dependent on Miralax to have bowel movements, and growth pattern has slowed down. After a few years on reflux medicines, it’s common for me to be looking at a stunted child who is barely getting taller; who is epically picky, cranky, or anxious; who is struggling to learn, behave, or develop normally; and who is so stuck on Miralax even at ever increasing doses, it doesn’t work so well anymore.
    The whole point of these medicines is to weaken stomach acid - presumably because too much acid is irritating the esophagus. Reflux medicines (“proton pump inhibitors” or PPIs) are the second most prescribed drug for infants and children, behind antibiotics. Does your baby even need it?
    These medicines were created and approved for use in adults who may actually have too much acid gurgling up from the stomach into the esophagus. But this may not be what is happening in a baby or toddler’s digestion. Reflux medicines are not FDA approved for use in infants (kids under a year old) but are routinely prescribed anyway. Even if actual reflux was the issue, the only way to know for sure is to put the baby through an invasive procedure with something called a pH probe. A probe is stuck down the baby’s throat in “dip-stick” fashion so that a reading on the stomach’s acidity can be taken. Infants may need sedation and hospitalization to get through this procedure. Obviously, it’s all too easy for your pediatrician to hand you a prescription instead and say “try this”.

    Interesting tips and food for thought. I'm wondering if my baby has reflux or if it's just normal baby sick. Hard to know!

    • @SophiePickles
      @SophiePickles  Рік тому

      I find that reflux tends to be a much more significant amount that normal baby sickness/spit up. It also happens after almost or every milk feed and can be instant or a little while later. Babies can also seem uncomfortable with reflux (groaning, grunting, crying, writhing etc.) although sometimes they don't show any of these symptoms! Agree it can be hard to tell!

    Please talk to us about allergies! I breastfeed and don’t drink cow milk and I don’t eat diary products, but what about eggs, nuts… My baby is 1 month old and he cries right after eating, can’t sleep, pukes…

      I'll make a video very soon! In the meantime, if you think it is allergies you could also try eliminating soya as it has a very similar molecular make up to dairy and babies are often allergic to both. This is also the case with pea protein (chickpeas, peas, legumes) and beef, but I'd start with soya and see what happens. Also bear in mind that it can take several weeks after you have eliminated to see a baby's symptoms reduce, so don't be disheartened that nothing has happened yet xx

    What formula your reflux baby drinks

    • @SophiePickles
      @SophiePickles  Рік тому

      She is breastfed but there are comfort formulas on the market that can help, as well as milk thickener. Your doctor or a paediatric nutritionist will be able to advise you.

    Is it normal for a reflux baby to cough & choke while feeding?

    • @SophiePickles
      @SophiePickles  Рік тому +1

      In my experience, it isn't super common with reflux babies to react in that way during feeding. It could however be a sign of other things like fast let-down/fast flow on a bottle (depending on how you're feeding), tongue tie or allergies - or a combination of these! If you can, try to contact an IBCLC in your area or go to a local feeding group where they can watch your baby feed and give you advice xx

    Hiii my daughter is 2 month old and she can't sleep all night

    • @SophiePickles
      @SophiePickles  Рік тому +4

      It would be very unusual for a 2 month old to sleep all night. It's normal for babies to wake up multiple times in the night, most will continue to do so until they are at least 9-12 months (although the frequency of the waking will decrease). Very normal but completely exhausting! ❤️

    1st daughter terrible, healthcare people really don't like reflux milk and won't even suggest it. A friend did and she was literally a different baby.
    2nd daughter, constantly being sick could be minutes after... 30 to 1hour after.. had tongue tie fixed didn't help, she had really bad colic aswell, we then reached the point of saying reflux milk is the way and she again was a changed baby. She's 7 months now I want to try an test her on normal milk now so wish me luck 😬😬 xxx

      Thanks for sharing! I've heard that specially formulated milk or milk thickener can be really useful. I didn't try it with either if my babies as they were breastfed. We did try infant gaviscon and omeprazole but unfortunately neither made any difference!
      We also had a tongue tie revision which did little to help too.
      It's such a tough road isn't it!
      Fingers crossed for you that the milk transition goes smoothly 🤞🏻
