    I was a black belt in Tae Kwon Do did it for 10 years. Found out the hard way that it didn't work and that I knew nothing about self defence. Completely shut down and I'm a big confident guy. My lessons: don't train fighting, train fear response, recovery and situational awareness.

      Best advice I've seen in the comments. There are no rules and the consequences can ruin you for life. A good friend of mine ended up in jail for a very long time over a single punch and the guy he hit is unfortunately no longer with us because of it. Only fight if there is no other choice.

      Charlie Alder Thats a crazy story because my brother ended up in the same exact predicament. He was getting bullied by some dude bigger than him, he punched him just once. The guy fell, hit his head and never got back up. It’s always best to walk away from fights because you never know how it’ll end

      If I could be certain it was going to be a fair fight, OK, let's do this... BUT, nowaways all these macho guys are armed and they go around with their buddies. So, yeah... just walk away unless they're really trying to hurt you/kill you then obviously you have no choice but to defend yourself.

      @@mosmos2821 I know what you mean, but try to interpret it this way: Plans are more about trying to predict the future and strategy is more about preparation in the present, more like training "instincts", I suppose
      Anyway, this is not a philosophy channel, despite the "good words", you have to adapt the hints to your reality and think for yourself

    • @opiniawam9205
      @opiniawam9205 4 роки тому +5

      Logically speaking, there will be no strategies if there were no plans in the first place. What makes it work is your training and your well trained instinct that will cause your muscle memory to react automatically on defense and attack mode in needed situation.
      I give you an example, a 19 year old Pencak Silat student in Indonesia got stopped by armed robber ( with a sickle ) on the street, he defended his property and in return he got few stitches on his face but he killed the robber with the robber`s own weapon. When asked by the police during investigation and by the national media reporters during interview on what happened, he told them all what he could recall from the event but fail to explain on what made him keep going and didn`t stop early ( from attacking the robber ), he said " I don`t know, I did remember stopping when I realized someone was crying for mercy down under and I found out I had a weapon in my hand ". Initially he let the robber go with a standby motorbike rode by the co-robber but unfortunately the robber died in hospital. So you see, he had neither plans nor strategies, he had only one decision i.e to protect his property and the rest were his training, instinct and muscle memory.

    In my 'younger' days I worked as a security officer at a high profile hotel, and often during the night shift drunken clubbers would try to get in. It would be a case of me being polite, but alert, never the aggressor. It was a case of let them get bored and move on, do not respond with aggression and give them a reason to escalate. So what if they call me all the names under the sun? They got to walk away feeling big and bold in front of their mates, I got to go home to my family intact and safe, and I did my job and stayed professional. Funny thing was, it wasn't unusual to have people return in a sober state and actually apologise for their behaviour.
    For me it was always a case of, be calm (or at least try your hardest), be polite and be aware. I found these things would more often than not confuse the aggressor as they were not getting the 'usual' response or signals to their learned behaviour. I would break the cycle. Let them save face, forget your ego, and both parties get to live for another day.

    Before having a random and unexpected physical altercation i usually prepare a well researched power point presentation that i share with my opponent so that we both know what to do during our fight. Good communication skills are also essential for a good quarrel, let your opponent know what you like and what you want them to do during an intimate brawl.

He is dead now and he showed me a few things but it’s like you said you don’t plan you react by what you know. And most people that know don’t let themselves get caught up in situation of not being in control. Step back away avoid conflict. Oh and my dad ended up with the knife and kept it . I learned very early in life that if something is important enough to get into a physical fight over, the fight will either end when one of the participants is dead, or they realize they cannot win. If you decide to fight, or are forced into a fight by the attack of another, you have to go into it no holds barred, planning to keep fighting until your opponent can't or won't. I was the smallest person in my class in school for many years, even the girls were bigger than me, but I did not let that stop me from fighting back. Almost always, the decision to fight for myself was all it took to end any bullying. Sometimes it took a punch or two before the bully decided it wasn't worth it. My point is that attitude is far more important than skill. A good solid punch in the nose is enough to stop almost anyone (unless they are high on something). I was 5 foot 9, 165 lbs., and had a road rage incident with a guy around 6 foot 6, 275 lbs. He stopped in front of me and came walking back to me planning to beat the shit out of me. He shoved me once, and I told him not to put his hands on me again. He shoved me a second time and I shot out a left jab without even thinking about it. Next thing I knew, he had his hands to his face, dripping blood from his nose, actually crying (tears running down his face along with the blood). He said, "You bloodied my nose!" as if I had done something wrong. Then, he hurried back to his truck and took off like a bat out of hell. Don't let size stop you; attitude is what wins fights.

      Ahhh yea - for the most part that is true which I say because things in real life have a lot going on at the same time so theres multiple things to think about. But in competition, you study your opponent and prepare for certain things but you still cant have an order to what you will do. You will know when to use what. Keep in mind, not all fights are the same so you have to plan differently for each fight. If I fought Mike Tyson then I personally would go in a little heavier and try to use more strenght then speed. If I fought Maywheather I would get lighter and focus on more speed then strenght.

      Excuse me good sir,but if you allow me I want to share my experience due to the flashback induced by the word ,,combinations" in your statement.If we are talking about very fancy combinations yes those will most likely fail and put you in a bad position.But if we are talking about simple and power+speed+deceptive oriented combos like a jab-jab-cross or a fake jab-cross-a lot of hooks to body/head that I tried in the gym and in my street fights( 2 times) worked clean.I paced the rythm of the fight and landed those combos so clea that I even scared myself.Just my humble and onest opinion.

    I like the "you can only deal with a weapon when it's being drawn" because it takes some of the actual self-defense wisdom a bit further. Things like the 5Ds+1 for disarms are meant for last-ditch, "I am about to die if I don't resist right now" actions. They're not meant to be your first tool of self-defense - being proactive and using tools or blocking the weapon from coming out are far better methods of dealing with weapons.
    It's similar to one of my favorite lessons on choke defense. It was: "The best way to escape a sunk-in, rear naked choke is to not be put into a sunk-in rear naked choke. Let's teach you how to do that, since if it's at that next stage, you're already dead."

      You have to have a high level of skill to fend off 2 or 3 people at once who are dead set on attacking you at the same time. The best thing to do is stick and move. Then move around in circular motions inorder to keep you eyes on the multiple attackers. You must know exactly where to hit them at to inflict damage properly so they'll eventually back up off ya.

      You're obviously an inexperienced fighter sir. If you can't even block some punches then you're a pathetic fighter. You don't have any balance and coordination with your feet either. So ya don't know how to properly fight then because you must be capable and able to walk backwards in a circular motion inorder to keep your eyes on the attacker at all times. Then ya allowed the person to get on top of you. They either overpowered ya or had more fighting skills than you simple as that.

    I've been through a lot of street fight dangerous situations. You need to practice reflex and you do that by training punches and motions to the point it naturally becomes a reflex in a fight. You see a lot of guys just stand there after they get punched in shock. They could be big guys too but these guys shouldn't have never been in that fight in the first place. You have to be honest with your self and understand your limits now so you can improve them later. Otherwise you're going to get hurt trying to be a tough guy with pride. Street fights don't carry no rules. Ain't no honor in it either.
    I'm old, I don't bother fighting anymore, I just pull out my blade, I'm a smart guy and don't go looking for trouble so the typical brutes I encounter typically back down once I show my blade and I'm calm about it because I've been in situation's with my blade many times before. After awhile you get a name about yourself on the street and people and gangs will leave you alone if you mind your business or ain't looking for trouble but they know you ain't no bitch neither.
    I live in a bad area. I carry a blade just to go to the grocery store. I never pull out my blade unless I feel my life is endanger because I know once I do I will use it if it comes down to it. I don't want all the trouble that comes after the event that I always think it through before I decide to show that tool. You have to know how to read people as well. To sort out who's the brute with pride and who's the psycho. You can damage pride, you can't damage crazy. I've backed down from psychos because I know they will take it all the way. I also call the police on them to let the police know they have a psycho roaming the streets. I do this to protect the community as whole. Because someones with less experience is going to have a run in with the guy which will end up bad and I don't want to see that happen to someone in my community.

    Each morning, before entering the octagon of daily life, consider briefly meditating on the tenants of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius' seminal work Meditations. The key "tenant-strategy" involves seeing the flux of life and the vapidness of ego in the stream of time. Disassociate yourself from ego and any perceived ego insults by realizing self is a fluid constantly changing identity and in the vastness of eternity a water bubble that pops up for a second in water before reintegrating back into the flow in the vast river of time. An elephant is not bothered in the forest by a cracking twig or resistant branch in a tree, just expected for the elephant as part of the daily experience. To arrive at this higher plane, like martial arts you need to train your mind. The price of mastery is practice in meditation. Living on the higher plane and in the truth with love and compassion is the best strategy that will have you avoid any heads up "ego" confrontations. For that chance you are involved in a dangerous situation, Fight Science's central philosophy is golden in trying to create space and distance and monkey wrenching the OODA loop mentality of the aggressor in a calm, calculated, and philosophical way. Thank you for sharing your vast expertise and street smarts. The truth shall set us all free. New US subscriber.

    @ChrisKsan 4 роки тому

    Best strategy of self defense is first and foremost awareness and put yourself in a position of avoiding conflict altogether to the best of your abilities. Avoid tense areas, bad neighbourhoods, areas with the potential to have violent incidents. Be aware of your surroundings, objects, people, exits, vehicles, profile people around you just as a mental note. Avoid aggressive, verbal confrontations with strangers or prepare yourself to protect yourself, to run or fight, be civil even when you're angry, don't hesitate to call the police if needed.
    If into an argument with someone, try your best to maintain or de-escalate. Remove yourself from risky situations. Avoid challenging others, you don't know their background and capabilities etc. Avoid, avoid, avoid. Be a coward, it's fine. If you can avoid and if you can run, run. Better a coward and alive and well than brave and injured or dead.
    All that being said if all of the above fails and you can't get away or run, know your surrounding layout, the people around you and if you absolutely have to fight, do so with a violence level far exceeding your attacker, use big, simple movements that your brain can easily execute in high stress, adrenaline filled situations where your motor skills are not as sharp as usual. Literally fight like your life depends on it, because it does. Don't hesitate. Also strike first, if the threat is imminent, you may not get the chance to strike second.
    That being said, all the more reason to avoid conflicts and fights in non-sporting formats (real world) at all costs are also laws, depending where you live self-defense laws may not be in your favor or not exist ina practicle sense at all. You may succeed to protect yourself or those around you, but end up paying for damages or in jail.

    I don't know about this one you know. Forget plans and strategies etc etc. I say basically just practice 3 or 4 different kinds of punches or kicks over and over and over again. Till you do them in your sleep.. I'm talking thousands of times and mix them up and reduce and increase the space you have to practice so you're comfortable doing it in uncomfortable positions.
    This way when the time comes believe me even after being punched in the face you're going to get that combo together beautifully without thinking. It'll be so random and if you're good you'll do so much damage, but still be mentally frustrated critiquing yourself knowing none of the blows you gave were as good as you could have done. Even though you'd have probably knocked the person unconscious.
    That's my plan and strategy - Class dismissed

    Absolutely, he`s correct, when it happens, it`ll happen FAST, dont walk into a fight and NOT expect to get hit, train your mind as much as you train your body, strategise - dont plan, every single fight will be different from the last especially when weapons are involved, distance, balance and momentum are very important, dont over complicate an already complicated situatuion,,, obviously there is more to the equation but just try to be aware and realistic as you can, more importantly, just try to avoid them all together.

    (Sorry, but this is unrelated to the video): But
    I've been thinking, and would like to know peoples thoughts on MMA - My thought is:
    MMA is a useful sport. It is good, but people have forgotten it's true purpose: to find the 'best' methods from martial arts. Although the idea itself is flawed, it is the closest people can get to testing martial arts to full power. The reason martial arts such as BJJ, boxing and Muay Thai are 'the best' (only in terms of MMA) is because they can be adapted to be non lethal. boxing: for example uses gloves, with an entire focus on hitting and not being hit; therefore a boxer can use full force and have a low chance of causing serious injury, because of it's limitations on itself, andcso is the same for all martial arts 'proven' by MMA - because they work 'best' within that environment - as a sport.
    Various other martial arts cannot be used at their 'full effective force', because it's focus is to *immediately* damage the opponent, so there is no spectrum for a pain compliance as within BJJ where the person can tap out before they suffocate, so the focus works best within a sport environment.

      Worth noting about boxing, before they started using gloves people didn't die in the fights. Having your hands protected allows you to strike targets you wouldn't, lest you break your own hands. The devastating punches to the head just aren't something you would normally do, because bone is hard. Of course, back then, when the sport of boxing was still taking form, often hits to the head weren't allowed, which gave birth to the stereotypical "gentleman's stance" we've all seen in pictures of old timey pugilists.

    • @NetAndyCz
      @NetAndyCz 4 роки тому

      @@marsonofjo344 You can hit stronger with gloves but you do not do as much damage with them (but you do not hurt yourself either)... And open palm techniques usually suck way more with gloves.
      As for the MMA, it is a sport, with rules, with protective equipment, with referee to stop the fights if necessary. It has probably less rules than most other martial arts, but it is still far from realistic street-fighting. It is good to know some martial art and to be physically fit, but most real life scenarios are not fair 1v1 fights with no weapons.

    This gentleman is 100% correct. Case in point: a lot of people throw their hardest punch and if that doesn't end the fight/completely change the trajectory in their favor, you can see their whole demeanor change and the willingness to continue fight greatly decrease.

      For the most part thats true but do not hit as hard as you can everytime. Open up your opponent then when the shot is open then use your power. If your going for a combo then make the first few punches fast and when you see an openning then you use your power. Remember, it takes more energy if you miss a punch then if you land one, so if you keep throwing haymakers and keep missing then your not going to last long in a fight.

      I would suggest you avoid hitting someone in the teeth. If you cut your hand and there is an exchange of bodily fluids you can end up in real trouble later.
      My own personal strategy is to avoid places I know can be trouble, and people I know can be trouble. I believe the best fight you ever had was the one you avoided.

    8yrs of boxing, and was taught to expect the punch accept it and follow through, on the street there's no rules so instinct takes over but if you practice everyday your training will kick in right after first couple moves.
