I was age 12 when this song came out on the local radio. I instantly fell in love with it & bought it on a "45". The records were $2 each ! and I bought it with my own money. Subsequently I also fell in love with Joe Stampley & the Uniques, who turned out living only about 35 mi. from my hometown. When I made it into highschool they would play at most of our school dances & were always fantastic. 💋❤️💋❤️💋
I agree this song should have been a bigger hit than it was. I wish some group would give it a little 2023 update and cover it. What was a catchy tune in '65 is still a catchy tune in '23.
I was 16 when this song was on the radio, I had a girlfriend that I thought I was crazy in love and she dumped me for another guy...I use to sit in my 1950 ford and listen to this song on AM radio. I was broken hearted until I found another girlfriend and forget all about her...Being a teenager wasn't easy but we all outgrew it...It's a great song and still listen to it to this date. Love the song and brings back sooooo many memories.
went to a joe stampley show a few years ago, someone asked if i was his granddaughter because i knew all his songs. the answer is no, just that my dad had great music! wish everyone knew about the uniques
Loved this group...one of my favs from the Ark-La-Tex area. "Uniquely Yours" was among the best LPs of this era, and you won't be disappointed if you listen to it.
The Uniques were BIG favorites for the Baby Boomers in Shreveport- Bossier City. Lots of high school dances with " All These Things" being the song that got everyone dancing real close. The guy over Joe Stampley the singer's left shoulder was Bobby Sims. He worked for me in the 1980 Census and was the only person to make a perfect score on the test we gave for the jobs. Always fun to talk to...best wishes on your trip to "somewhere on the astral plane".
On this day in 1965 {March 27th} the Uniques performed "Not Too Long Ago" on the Dick Clark ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'... At the time the song was at #70 on Billboard's Top 100 chart, two weeks later it would peak at #66 {for 1 week} and it spent six weeks on the Top 100... Besides "Not Too Long Ago", the Louisianan band had one other Top 100 record, "All These Things", it reached #97 in 1966... Between 1971 and 1989 the Uniques' leader, Joe Stampley, as a solo artist, had sixty-two records on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart, eighteen made the Top 10 with four reaching #1, "Soul Song" for 1 week in 1973, "Roll On Big Mama" for 1 week in 1975, "All These Things" for 1 week in 1976, and "Just Good Ol' Boys", with Moe Bandy, for 1 week in 1979... Nine of Joe Stampley's sixty-two charted records were duets with Moe Bandy... Joe Stampley will celebrate his 75th birthday in three months on June 6th {2018}...
In the more modern day of one hit superstars, these guys would have made it big time. They played my HS graduation in Arkansas and landed in Fayetteville for a frat party or two with a trip to 'The Rink" on the other weekend night. OMG-brings backs memories!
Lodged in my nine year old's brain, this song is forever linked to Willie Mays home runs during 1965, his second MVP year--both on AM radio, both bringing dopamine excitement, together forming a song that goes like this: "Not too long ago, now You can tell it bye-bye baby!"
I grew up in south Arkansas and graduated in '66...... they played everywhere in south Arkansas, north Louisiana, and east Texas. I saw them several times. They never got the recognition they should have.
I saw them at the Gregg Co Fair... probably 65, 66, 67.... they would play one year and Mouse and the Traps would play another year- I was a fan, had their recording of All These Things
Man, I always loved the Uniques...my oldest brother Claude loved them and he is the one who turned me onto them....when I started dating the girl that is now my wife of 41 years...she loved them too !!!
This is a great song, but the sad thing is this song only got high as number 66 on the charts in 1965 . This song should have been much higher than that at least in the top 40,
Great effing song. It is NEVER played on the radio, not on AM/FM or Satellite and that is soo unfortunate. I've loved it since it came out when I was a little tyke. I remember back in the early 2000's calling Sixties on 6 (XM) and that moron DJ had no idea what I was talking about when I asked him to play it - He was much too busy talking about himself and all the places he visits, the music takes a back seat. #PHIRE PHLASH
She used to hold me close At the picture show, That was when she really, really loved me so, Then he came along Like the stormy sea, Not to long ago, Now she don't love me anymore. She used to walk with me Beneath the tall oak tree, She had me thinkin' How happy we would be And then he came along Like the devil in disguise Not too long ago, Now I've got tears in my eyes. She said she'd always be my girl, She said her love would never die, She said she'd always be my girl, Then she left with him Left my heart to cry, Now I'm so lonely, Broken and blue, Because I don't have no one That I can talk to, 'Cause he took her away from me Not too long ago. Now she don't love me anymore. She said she'd always be my girl, She said her love would never die, She said she'd always be my girl, Then she left with him Left my heart to cry. Now I'm so lonely, Broken and blue Because I don't have no one That I can talk to, 'Cause he took her away from me Not too long ago. Now she don't love me anymore.
Boy it sure felt like it was number one on the radio in Fresno California! What great lyrics, reading them you might think it was a sad song and maybe it is but you never got a feeling that it was a depressing song was the feeling of a somebody who is punching right back and getting right back in the race, maybe that's why it was so popular. I don't think I've heard this song for 30 years, finally tonight I heard it, it was played on Jamie Del Appa's (search for the first rock and roll tune,) coming out of New Orleans. Boy it brought me right back. I had to do quite a bit of searching to find this though. I was thinking this comments section might have the most information on this tune than anywhere else in the world. Google is a joke when trying to find information on songs like This. I'm thinking we are writing the only history that will exist about these songs in 100 short years. Will anybody care, or anybody ever read it then? --Doug Bashford
From the looks of the Go-Go dancers (aren't they good?), I'd guess this is one of the California teen shows of that era. Love J/S & the Uniques from Springhill, La. I was too young to go to their dances, but old enough at the time to love their music. Maybe Joe or one of the other guys can comment on which show this was taped on?
@ John Paul Revere: 'The Lloyd Thaxton Show' came from Los Angeles, didn't it? I remember seeing this band perform this song on either his show or Dick Clark's, but I don't recall this big of a stage production done for them. Afterwards, there was a brief interview - but was it Thaxton or Clark doing it? 'Not Too Long Ago' was a great record for its time. Modern day viewers have to keep in mind that, fashion-wise, The Uniques didn't have 'the look' that was necessary then. 1965 was a time when 'The British Invasion' was ascendant and dominant. Long and longer hair on men was required in popular music; shorter hair (and black-rimmed glasses) were seen as 'dated' and un-cool. The Newbeats and The Knickerbockers were in the same boat as The Uniques, 'image'-wise - even though The Knickerbockers scored with one of the best singles of the 60's ('Lies'). When they all showed up on TV, they were judged as being un-hip and 'out of it' - and that hurt them in the Top 40 marketplace. As a side observation, it sounds like 'Dick and Dee Dee' (or at least Dick) singing the high parts on this record. Thanks for posting, lypilapa!
looks like the Shivaree Show from LA; ran from 65-66; you can see clips of other acts with the same background on UA-cam, eg The Reflections' Just Like Romeo and Juliet
No. These guys were from Louisiana, but if you want to hear classic "Swamp Rock" or more appropriately "Swamp Blues" check out Slim Harpo, Lightnin' Slim, Lazy Lester; pretty much anything from the 50's on the EXCELLO label.

Such a PERMANENT impression on my life.
Love it! 🥰

Plain and simple.
Yes just like a time machine, zapped me back to an age of innocence. Love this song!❤

I am 77 and still love this song. Great
That song will take you back to 1965 just like a time machine could.
First time I've heard this great song since late 1960s , now I keep playing it over in my mind . What a time it was .
Man, I like this. Never heard it until today. It should have been a much bigger hit.
Joe is my uncle, my grandpa is the bass player. Seeing them on stage makes me wish I knew them from that time.
Thanks for sharing this !!!

I got to watch them record at a recording studio in Tyler, TX. I was a young girl. Loved them!!!

I absolutely love this song!
Lodged in my nine year old's brain, this song is forever linked to Willie Mays home runs during 1965, his second MVP year--both on AM radio, both bringing dopamine excitement, together forming a song that goes like this: "Not too long ago, now You can tell it bye-bye baby!"
This video in an American Treasure !!! The Song went fast up the charts and the Women Dancing are HOT
Love this group. ALL THESE THINGS was such a huge hit. Wonder why NOT TOO LONG AGO didn’t chart as well. 😎
This is a fantastic song that NOBODY plays on the radio, not even Satellite !!! Unbelievably great song

My thoughts too! Where's it been? It's the beat...great lyrics!
Used to listen to this on KOMA
saw them in 1966 in Lake Charles........great group!
Loved this song, It reminds me of an old friend, Glenn. He used to sing this and accompany himself on guitar.
I had the pleasure of knowing Joe when he was with the Uniques, with Moe Bandy and when he went single. Loved his music then and still love it today.
MY OWN "BROKEN HEARTED MELODY"❣️😢
Fond memories of my great childhood brought me here. Life was fantastic back then.
Yes, it sure was.
What a great song this is
I always thought they were a black group,. I always love that song. I am 73 yrs old, from Geneva, OH. I graduated from High School in 1969
I grew up in south Arkansas and graduated in '66...... they played everywhere in south Arkansas, north Louisiana, and east Texas. I saw them several times. They never got the recognition they should have.

Fantastic ❤️

That’s awesome. I wish it was truly live though. On those shows, they only lip sync. Joe had a great voice and that song proved it 👍
This was played in San Diego but wasn't as big a hit here as it should have been.
Amy Lemoine The Uniques we’re the best ! Use to play at the Peacock Club in Marksville. Everyone loved The Uniques.
Great song, thanks
You are welcome.
Great vocal !
This is a great song, but the sad thing is this song only got high as number 66 on the charts in 1965 . This song should have been much higher than that at least in the top 40,
Brings back sooo much. Really appreciate the posting!

Not To Long Ago.....Time Goes By........
Great tune.
One of my favorite songs
WHAT A GREAT SONG
Love this
Only reached #66 on Billboard. What a travesty!
I agree. Thought it should've gone Top 10 when I bought the single as a kid and STILL DO. It's a gem.
Should have been TOP because everyone bought the 45 records and I went to school in 3 States
Great music thank you.
You are welcome!

She used to hold me close
At the picture show,
That was when she really, really loved me so,
Then he came along
Like the stormy sea,
Not to long ago,
Now she don't love me anymore.
She used to walk with me
Beneath the tall oak tree,
She had me thinkin'
How happy we would be
And then he came along
Like the devil in disguise
Not too long ago,
Now I've got tears in my eyes.
She said she'd always be my girl,
She said her love would never die,
She said she'd always be my girl,
Then she left with him
Left my heart to cry,
Now I'm so lonely,
Broken and blue,
Because I don't have no one
That I can talk to,
'Cause he took her away from me
Not too long ago.
Now she don't love me anymore.
She said she'd always be my girl,
She said her love would never die,
She said she'd always be my girl,
Then she left with him
Left my heart to cry.
Now I'm so lonely,
Broken and blue
Because I don't have no one
That I can talk to,
'Cause he took her away from me
Not too long ago.
Now she don't love me anymore.

looks like 1964 or early 65. not sure where.
This was their first hit, recorded early 1965.
