  • The strong, flapping flight of bats offers great possibilities for the design of small aircraft, among many other applications. By building a robotic bat wing, Brown University researchers have uncovered flight secrets of real bats. Bat wing project leader and NSF Graduate Research Fellow Joseph Bahlman says the faux flapper generates data that could never be collected directly from live animals, and may lead to improved aircraft efficiency and help in the design of small flapping aircraft.

Bats are adorable. And their wings are simply fascinating.

I’m a biologist, too, and bats fascinate me more than any other kind of animals, for many distinct reasons, among which the fact that, being mammals closely related to us, their body and ours are basically two variations of a same thing (while the body of birds and pterosaurs are deeply different from ours and from each other).
Few are the things in which bat bodies are really different from our monkey bodies: the claws, the mobile ears, etc... and that’s amazing.
And it’s also amazing how differently flight has evolved every time it did on this planet, where flying is so difficult (for the strong, strong gravity). Insects, pterosaurs, birds, and bats... fly so differently from each other!

I'm working on a made-up creature for an animation that I've wanted to make since Middle School (Now a college graduate) and I'm trying to make it realistic enough for it to be possible to exist as an animal. It has bat-like wings, but I could never decide which design would be most appropriate. I hadn't thought much about that one fragile area of the wing. I always drew muscle there because I learned from a book illustrating dragons, but this video showed me some things I'd been looking for. Thanks for uploading it! :)

I love what you're doing. Bats are wonderful extremely interesting animals to me. I'm actually envious of you. I'm house bound because of physical issues. Science is providing so much more for the curious and creative spirit today.

It would be really cool to see how much better something like this could be if there was a material that works better as a mucles. Ide love to see a drone that flys as well as these beautiful creatures.

It would be cool to build a motorized batwing ornithopter suit that a human adult could wear to fly around in.

I'm trying to animate dragon wings, and someone recommended watching bat videos, so I did. This is really helpful for animating wings from the side and somewhat above, but I'm looking for above shots. Still, I'm going to use this in my animation some day

This has nothing to do with Batman. :(
