just wanted to pop in and mention that the Skulltimate Secrets artist actually used to work on G1 MH artwork. I honestly think it’s the color pallets of G3 that are throwing you off more than the art itself. I love your longer videos, it feels like we’re hanging out and chatting and it’s awesome

Spirit has a habit of slightly sexualizing their costumes, not all of them but a lot. They sell actual sexy costumes but with normal costumes they often slightly sexify them by removing undershirts when characters wear them. Drac did the same thing, notice the leather straps on Frankie's dress, and their normal Dorothy costume has the shirt removed.

Oh my gosh!! Yes, Frankie's head looks so werid like their neck is really short. That scared me away from buying the doll too. I thought that maybe it was just the shirt they were wearing
I'm finally getting around to watching this video (I've been super busy lately) but I wanted to say, when you were talking about Draculaura's body type (42:20) I legit cried after I opened her doll at my boyfriend's house. He asked me what was wrong and I said it feels so nice to see a doll with my body shape. Like she looks like me!!! She's so pretty!! I can be pretty!!! It was such a nice and sappy cry sesh, and he also learned how important diverse dolls are :)

Imo it doesn't give Monster High because while the dolls have the monster features and some of the clothing have monster motifs printed on, none of the fashions look like they come from a monster world. They just look like they completely adopted fashion from modern normies instead of adapted their trends to fit their world - and if we're just getting regular clothes why bother with the monster gimmick?

Hi, I really love your videos and your style. I share and understand your gripes with g3, I also think they kinda butchered or half-arsed some topics/representation/style, but I will say I am more positive about this iteration than negative and I like to see what MH g3 will do next. I do want to add on some things and my personal input, even if this video is old, I hope that what I say can still be helpful in some way, or at the very least interesting. Sorry in advance for the essay I'm about to write😅 (and potential rants about MH that will follow).
About Abbey, after some time and wiki research, one of the designers, Cristina Faline, confirmed that Abbey is supposed to be Nepalese. Only the voice actress is Indian, and probably because of that or because of the art direction, the character of Abbey in the cartoon seems to have an Indian accent.
As for Draculaura.... I have complex thoughts about her, especially since I'm Romanian. Complex, because I myself have a weird relationship with my nationality. I am one of those weird cases where I was born and grew up in Romania, but because I was an introverted hermit that only liked cartoons, I consumed exclusively western (mostly American) media and perfected my English, to a point where even my peers think I'm an American or Romanian diaspora, due to my somewhat American accent bleeding over my native tongue when i speak. I also don't know much about my own culture and history, because I was so disinterested in it, and kept avoiding it, that I could never retain any information about. I'm trying to fix that now, but it is hard.
That's why I usually hesitate to comment about anything relating to Romania, because I feel like an imposter/a phony, and I also fear to spread any misinformation. That's why my opinions about Draculaura are purely anecdotal and subjective.
I have no issue with Draculaura being half Taiwanese, or that MH showcases her Taiwanese heritage. Romania is mostly a homogenous country, but there are obviously biracial and foreign people that live in the country too. My issue is with the showcasing of her Romanian heritage. Or rather, lack thereof. The only thing they mention about it is that she's from Transylvania and she speaks "Transylvanian" *cue groan*. For the love of God, this is the same annoying spiel that ALL vampire media suffers from and keeps spouting and it clearly shows they still rely on an outdated and factually wrong stereotype created by an ignorant Englishman (Bram Stocker) and exacerbated by American Hollywood. First off, they refer to Transylvania as if it's a country. IT's NOT, it is the a region of Romania. Second, Draculaura's accent in g1, at first I did think it sounded a bit Romanian (even tho, imo, I don't think there's such a thing as a proper Romanian accent, cuz there's also different regional dialects to consider, which can affect an accent, and different English levels a Romanian is at when it comes to pronounciation). But when her g1 VA, Debi Derryberry, said she actually did a Russian accent for her, it made me so pissed, because it showed they were lazy and thought "oh, romanian sounds kinda like Russian, no one will notice, since all eastern European cultures are just Russian, but different font". This type of ignorance is very grating, and I get that kids shows rely on stereotypes, cuz it's easy storytelling, but the least they could've done is make sure the stereotype they're basing off of is at the very least a bit factual, like getting the language, nationality and geography right. Frankly, I am personally glad they decided to forego the accents (plus, you can justify it in Draculaura's case, cuz she lived for so long and frequently spoke English, that inevitably she just lost the accent).
Draculaura is my favourite character in both iterations (alongside Frankie), I especially like her in g3 (I have more of a preferance for jaded characters, and the witch side of her is so fangtastic). I wish the cartoon can showcase her Romanian heritage too and give it the proper space and respect (as much respect as a kids American cartoon can give), the way they seem to do it with her Taiwanese heritage; my personal gripes with my culture aside, it is unfair to have a character come from 2 different backgrounds and showcase only one. I hope the reason why they don't do that is just lack of time and space for proper research, and not some sort of subconcious slavophobia/hatred for any eastern european country (even if Romania is not a slavic country, it does have some slavic influences). It would be so cool to have some eastern european rep in MH, if they just try and open their mind. Like, they already have the set up, they just have to care to develop it.
Sorry for the heated arguments, I hope I made sense 😅 This is no hate to you or anyone, just wanted to rant and share my "Americanized" Romanian view of this whole thing. Obviously, not all Romanians will share the same opinions as mine about Draculaura or MH as a whole. And that you can still enjoy vampire media, such as any Dracula media or Vampire Kisses, just be aware the "Romanian" stuff they say or do is usually inaccurate.

Also Draculaura's movie actress cares about romanian representation unlike Mattel because she wanted to do the accent but was rejected unless she did American. Courtney (cartoon va) doesn't seem to care though and many eastern Europeans were mad. She's not half romanian she's American now. Don't believe that if you see it. And no romanian was offended by Draculaura's accent, non Romanians called it stereotyped to justify slavophobia
They cut Dracula's accent in the cartoon too, and considering toralei the villain and the latina stereotype lagoona have accents its giving not only slavophobia but also, accents are vil. It's very nationalist
Specifically Todd's movie was about americans going to Australia to film a documentary on aboriginal australians. And yes they do makeup and go fooling around, touching stuff they shouldn't touch, just being disrespectful, so yeah it's not good

One thing I think would be fun to see in future doll lines/animated episodes is some of the characters (maybe just the main crew) wearing pins with their pronouns on them. I know some people wouldn't like it and would say it's too much but I have seen people sell and buy those types of pins and I really just think it would be cute to see!

Also wanted to note that elviras makeup has nothing to do with her sexuality, if you look up elvira makeup youll see thats how it always looks its just more noticeable on the doll

From what i seen people say shes actually a lesbian or jisy doesnt label herself, but either way that rumor was false the makeup is just based on how the character looks not her sexuality

I guess when I think of Elvira I think of the super dark thick eyeliner around her eyes and on the doll it feels like the eyeshadow was way more prominent than the liner and it just came off so bright it wasn’t for me🥲 but I get that she does wear those colors just guess the style isn’t for me 🤷

I do wanna say about the Scultimate Secrets Frankie, firstly. I thought the hat was a bdsm hat. Like leather daddy's wear. I didn't even think the other thing until a friend pointed it out. Second, I don't like the boots on this frankie but the silver shoes they come with are awesome. I actually ended up putting the see-through boots on my Scultimate Secrets NEON Frankie, and they're also wearing the g2 uv frankie dress and these pieces look so much better together than they ever did on the doll they came with. Thirdly I actually ended up using the jacket and detachable collar in a custom doll (the g2 uv frankie I got the dress from) and it looks so good on her! ('her' not 'them' cause I mean the g2 doll I'm not actively trying to misgender g3) Long story short I have 3 Frankies now and I really like the scultimate secrets lines because I've been able to mix and match these pieces so well.

The movie anyways made a big deal out of clawdeen turning into a human even tho thats just what werewolves do , lik yeah its a nick movie for kids but even little little kids know that werewolves can turn human so im more then certien even they would scratch their head over that being dramatized

Im autistic myself also n tbh-i feel like mattel tried really hard to make ghoulia seem more nt (ik shes not canonically autistic but she was coded as one) lik not having her sluch , her bein verbal now and how she uses a skateboard for mobility issues even tho thats extremly unsafe and can end in her being hurt as someone who is autistic it comes off as them saying “yeah shes disabled but not like THOSE disabled people”

I have a lot of feelings about all of this also. 1. for the live action movie, I haven't seen it yet and was mixed in how I felt; now that you have discussed it, I really don't know if I want to see it. Especially because of the lack of friendly support and care you see in the original tv series/movies. I am a big fan of Draculaura because of her sweet innocent personality and I don't like how she is different in the movie from what you say. The lack of accent is also a minus for me. 2. I haven't watched the new g3 cartoons because I can't stand the artform they are using. I don't like the way the characters look, and to me, they all look like junior high versions of themselves. I am not planning on watching this series right now. 3. For the new G3 dolls, the only one i really like is Draculaura. I think her new face sculpt is just adorable and I love her. I have three different G3 dolls of her. I am not happy with any of the other dolls right now. They are so changed and not appealing to me. I might get Twyla though as she is the cutest. I have the first G3 Frankie and I am not happy with her. She is too different and I keep feeling when I look at her, that her head is too big for her body. Torelai is way different also. I've never liked her as a character because she is so mean, but her G1 dolls are just gorgeous. The G3 version of her is so far from her original self, and i don't like it. I'm just waiting to see what I think as more dolls come out, and then I will decide which ones I want. But for now, I'm only planning on getting the Draculaura dolls. I also don't like the plushies; they are really strange looking. Great video Sweetie and I appreciate your thoughts :)

I understand why you don't like the shiny art styles! I'm not a monster high stan by any chance, i just watch your videos about it, but something about it bugs me as well? Me personnally, I think it bugs me because they are shiny in a like, more mature way? Like they give adult model vibes, but the characters are teens? To me, it's kinda giving making teens look like adults?And it's a thing i dislike in anything. It's really hard to explain in a way that makes sense but I hope i'm being clear😅😅 I dunno if you also get the same vibe as me! The artist is clearly great at their craft, but it's just not my vibe

5:10 oh absolutely!! I adored how they styled Frankie honestly, but yeah that hoodie and those leggings were god-awful
The sets in this film were really cool, but the way all the scenes were lit with sunlight didn't fit at all! Some classic horror lighting would have helped with the look of the film a lot more!
Tbh i get that the new generation is more modernised (just like og monster high was back then) but i personally think it would be better as a whole other show. Like its rlly cool and i love the inclusiveness i just HATE how they went and changed all the characters i grew up with. Its just not the same

I hate the new one. I like some things like Frankie being non-binary but it’s odd switching pronouns between the new and the old sometimes however it takes time to finally get the two Frankie’s separated.
I also hate what they did to Cloe, Draculaura, and basically everyone except Frankie (I love them!!!). I hate how they completely redone all their personality (My girl Draculaura became a mean girl and Clawdeen lost her badassness! I also just hate Clawdeens hair too, her human form looks better then her wolf form) except my pal Frankie (I am obsessed) and their character designs look out of wack (Lagoona and Abby my babies lost it all! Brand new characters, I also kinda hate/love Draculaura, hate the fact she’s a mean girl, love her design but miss the pig tails, her being a witch is a soso for me but i don’t get why they’re hated still?). CGI and monster designs for the live action are so… bad.. I hated it and hated the music, it’s not monster high it’s a the Disney Monster Highschool Musical, except that one Humans are disgusting song was stuck in my head for days.
I do love it though because we just got desperate the all three gens because they’re not the same just with the same tropes, names, and certain things basically. But other then that separate. That helps me love it.
My favorites are definitely Frankie (I love them and everything of them and everything!), Dracula, Torali (I love her in both generations) , and Frankie. I hate Deuce though and the fact they tried forcing romance (felt so forced!), broke up Deuce and Cleo.
I love outfits I just really wish they got more punk and scene with it.
Also also I- I- only collect littlest pet shops and the pets are not LPS at all. At least not the 2000s pets
Well, technically you aren't wrong about the Bratz vibes with some of the Monster High art! Darko Dordevic is the artist and he's done work for Mattel (For G1 and G3 idk about G2.), MGA and other toy companies! However, even before that he used to draw a decent bit of Bratz on his deviantart. So it is entirely possible that it has inspired his personal art style!
Also strongly agree on frankie, them being made of different people would at most imply their intersex-which is not the same as being nonbinary!! You could just say it implies their nonbinary AND intersex
I just hope they bring back jackson and let him date frankie again, im a nonbinary gay trans man dating a bi trans man and i would LOVE to see nblm couple represention since its so so rare to see
Drac is also not fat but as someone who is fat i really wish we got a dol who is outright fat, mattel only even gives us three body types : curvy thin n tall it would be great to see a doll who is fat

I actually got the core ghouls dolls myself n tbh i just used them to practice restyling , i reslly dont like lagona and clawdeen so i’ve been trying to restyle them , draculra is the only one i didnt give a majoe restyle to cause she looks the best same with frankie just gave them more black in their clothing(like black lipstick)
The biggest issue is how mattel puts more emphsis on small accesries then yhe quality and stands, g1 would only have one or two accesries most of the time and there are doll brands like RH which are succsful but dont have many accesries, they reslly should hsve limited it to one or two and focused on giving the dolls good materials and stands(since dolls like clawdeen have REALLY bad hair types)

I doubt theyll ever get to it, mattel’s “body diversity” only extends to what society views as “desirable” i doubt theyll ever dare have a doll who has a bigger stomach for example

I yesterday sewed my clawdeen a tight leather dress which i loved but then i remeber i took my OMG doll’s royal bee pants(sincy she has a really cute body suit under) so i used it on clawdeen putting it over the dress since its gold and gave her the shows she came w + vast n honestly now she givin me those y2k cool girl vibes i love it

That’s fair, I guess on screen (to me) it kind of translates as darker with the big lashes and liner, on the doll it felt much more uncharacteristically saturated/bright but that’s just my opinion!!

Either people don't like gen 3 is because they HATE that the dolls are diverse, especially Dracalaura (people are fatphobic, I seen awful comments to her doll), just like problematic Harry Potter fans, they just prefer the old ones, because it felt nastologic to them, thus, think it was way better, "the quality was A+++!" When really, in my opinion, the old dolls looked ugly (especially Twyla), and it looked like dollar store dolls, the outfit looked trashy, my sister had the old Laguna doll, and the clothes doesn't seemed high quality, it felt like another Barbie doll outfit (why do people keep saying that?), that's why I never collected them. And, also, the tv show, they love, but, in my opinion, the old MH tv show was trash, girl on girl hate, always competing for male attention, blah, blah, blah. I personally, love Gen 3, and the diversity, or what people who hate diversity would say, "woke" Monster High, because I identify with most of them, especially Draculaura, and Twyla. And, it's good that we have a show that includes different identity. And I love the new show, compared to the old ones. No competing for dudes, no girl on girl hate, deals with real problems, instead of boys.

Oh it is interesting to read people's views on things. I think some G1 Twyla dolls are really beautiful. Her Haunted and Freak du Chic versions are gorgeous.
