- 2013 was the 25th anniversary of the first time the Rep. of Ireland had qualified for a major soccer tournament, Euro '88.
What better occasion then to induct into the RTE Hall of Fame, one of the greatest Irish players of all time - the one and only Paul McGrath.
As a season ticket holder at the Villa during Big Paul McGrath's time there ,we all felt truly privileged. THE best player i have seen play for us. He just made it look so easy. Met the man himself, got his book signed and shook his hand ! A great day that was . There is a reason why he's known as God at Villa Park. Ask any Villan & they'll tell ya. Long live the big man !

I 2nd this 100%. Loved this guy in the green, what a player we had in him. If he was Italian, he'd be widely regarded as one of the world's best. People forget he couldn't even train properly in his final years if at all, yet week after week he was excellent when he played. Stay healthy Paul. We love ya man!!!!

I met Paul outside Celtic Park going into a game around 2004. He was in a rush to catch up with his mates but still gave time for a photo which my friend took. He was my idol growing up and still is. A true legend and fantastic human being

Worked in a nursing home in dublin for a long time we looked after a resident who was related to paul,s very good friend joey malone who was player manager of the great dundalk side of the 90,s it was the poor old dear,s bithday and did he bring in but only paul mc grath couldnt believe got to speak to one of my heroes still cant believe it to this day how he took the time to come in and spend time with all the residents and staff we all got autographs and photo,s legend of a man (st monica,s nh)

One of the best without doubt, I hate saying this guy or that was 'the best' because it's impossible to gauge.
Against Italy 94 he was the best player in that park.remember it well.waht heart.not just him the full team.but this man was head and shoulders above the lot of that park
I see so many Excellent comments on here..And in 94 I flew in2 NYC and man was it stifling Hot..I thought I would try and get to the Stadium&buy a Ticket,but got delayed..So instead I found a Bar(which was mostly Italian)and was fortunate to witness Mr McGrath give a Masterclass to a really Quality Italian side..Fond memories,Needless to say I Drank loads of Booze that day....And if more Players had an ounce of his ability&charm,we would be better off Today..

That's a tough call because you're saying he was better than an ageing Franco Baresi and a prime Paulo Maldini. I would say Paul was in the top 2 from 1982 till the 95/96 season as he didn't play at all in the 97 season. I'd definitely say he was the best central defender we've seen in England imo, just ahead of Jaap Stam and that's praise indeed!!
@@ianpearson8976 Paul McGrath said himself it was the right decision for Manchester United. He wasn't going to stop his drinking and it was setting a bad example to the many youngsters coming through. The guys a gent and a class act. Best central defender @ Manchester United imo.

Absolute legend, just reading his book, I was there in Giants Stadium in '94, what a day,
greatest player Ireland ever had.
He was the best defender on the planet for a few years himself and Franco Baresi were out on there own for a while and Usa 94 Roberto Baggio was far and away the stand out attacking player of the tournament and he barely got a touch of the ball when Ireland played italy .At the final whistle Baresi went chasing after him to get his jersey and the camera man never picked it up and Germany 88 after the Dutch knocked Ireland out Frank Rijkaard and Rudd Guillit were at the Irish dressing room looking for his jersey while all the irish boys were trying to get Van Basten ,Guillit ,and Rijkaard jersey they said they wanted to wait and see could they get Paul God McGraths jersey.Imagine how good he would have been if he didnt have that demon the booze .

I met Paul and his kids in the Phoenix park in 1995. I was a snotty nosed kid from O devaney garden who had a kart built on pram wheels. I use to roll down the grass hill in it and drag it back up to the top close to the play ground. I gave Paul's son a few goes in it and when it was time for them to go Paul gave me some change he had roughly 3 pound but man was I so chuffed to get that pat on the back and a thank you
