Well, I’m not impressed with Habermas’ overall theory but he makes some good points. - A very messy situation of verticals and horizontals of various type groups....I can say that my father was a newspaper editor from the thirties to the mid sixties and dealing with various autocratic publishers was a constant source of anger and frustration for him leading to his self-destruction.

No one has said this out right, but language is the ultimate technology. Therefore as the video points out, in the evolution of the society the power that the printing publisher took was very notable. Perhaps its a platonic divide between the writer (an individual) and the reader (the mass) becomes even more significant. And there is a complex socio-typography that influences throughout the circulation of language. For example, usually the bible will have a very bible like typography. Language is never a medium free technology. So there will be a web like communication of language. While the bible and classical language will be extended in more organic fashion. Present language will have complexity that will be perhaps called socio-textuality. This video (Habermas) has captured a historical progression. But then we could always slice this world in the way most interesting.

I agree....and some of the background graphics (especially the videos that are rolling while displayed) DISTRACT ATTENTION from the simultaneous voice-over narration. This IS the current (and visually/aurally appealing) style of such 5-10 minute mini-lectures, but (apropos the topic of this particular video) some elements may fail to respect the need of viewers to concentrate on the verbal messages that are being delivered. It is an error to use "the language of film" (images, particularly moving images, rapid cuts from one image to another, complex images, etc.) when the use of these techniques masks the essential message and degrades the effectiveness of the video itself. Does the creator desire his/her audience to come away with as complete and accurate an understanding, and retention, of the intended message? Or does s/he wish viewers to be pleased by the visual and aural presentation, to the exclusion of real understanding? These are worthy of consideration. This is a very appealing video, and I appreciate it on its own merits--but I come away thinking that (were I to edit it and make revisions) I would tone down the volume of the background music, and assess whether the accompanying images contribute to, or perhaps detract from, my essential aim.

Yes if you want to be entertained, that is entirely true. Reading advice where this issue is specifically tackled: Neil Postman, Amusing ourselves to death (1985). Btw I believe Neil Postman follows after Habermas in many of his own points, so by reading this book you'll hit two birds with one stone: it will answer your question AND help you deepen your knowledge of the topic of this video.

What the video doesn't do is begin to explain why there is a perceived need to create a theory of communicative action. While trying to hold on to a concept of social transformation for the better inherited from Marx, it was obvious to western Marxists that dialectical materialism carries a vast amount of philosophical baggage unjustified by Marx's own materialist methodology. Key is the concepts "better", "justice", "the good", "happiness". That there is some shared meaning to these terms is taken for granted by Marx, but from a modern philosophical perspective they rely on Hegel's essentially theological worldview. To ascribe meaning or validity to these essential social concepts, Habermas envisages an "ideal speech situation" which assumes value concepts. The problem is that Habermas' work never escapes from the Kantian formalism of his starting point, so the leap from the formal criteria to meaning never really happens.
You can see the same issue in the concept of the public sphere. Habermas retells the story of the emergence of mass politics, but the "sphere" is a formal concept which has no purchase on the content of what is being said. Again there is no successful link between form and content. The importance of mass politics is also in what is being said and not just the non-coercion of the context of the speech. But materialism cannot get from the form to the content without violating its formalist rules.
In his later life Habermas spoke with Pope Benedict about his concern with collapsing values and the collapse of the family. But the question is whether you can defend the "traditional family" or any family norms from a materialist perspective.
