Basics of Rainwater Harvesting for Residential Use
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 вер 2024
- Rainwater harvesting is growing in importance due to increasing costs in water consumptions, polluted groundwater findings all across the US, and the ability to hit net-zero water and score big in LEED and other green building programs. Also, it is just kinda cool!
Join us as we take an in-depth look at the rainwater harvesting process, water quality, applications, and common myths.
Bonus - Figure out how rainwater catchment is evaluated in green building certification programs such as LEED for Homes and the WERS index.

As I am researching how to do this on my off grid cabin I'm going to be building, I have been shocked at how many misconceptions there are about rainwater harvesting. People are really resistant to the idea- even among people who live an off-grid life. A lot of them think it's illegal, unsanitary, that their area has to receive rain all the time, etc. It's been really surprising. People will spend $30k on a well and won't even consider an rainwater system. Blows my mind.
A good well is much more reliable and less hassle than a rainwater system. The storage requirements can be extensive especially if it's the only source of water. Plus dealing with the unsightly tanks and ongoing maintenance. I'd prefer a well over a rainwater system but it doesn't hurt to have both.
I am going to harvest rain water for my home use. It is great to me finding this lecture. Thank you!
really awesome video with a lot of helpful starter tips for aspiring harvesters. I'm a plumber by trade and live in an area of canada that sees 121"+ of annual rainfall and climate change is showing up with massive atmospheric rivers through fall/winter that we've never seen before, and long periods of dry through summer with more and more water restrictions over the years. Looking forward to installing my own personal system on my home and adding rainwater harvesting as a local solution through my company. Thanks for the helpful tips and info!
Appreciate the information. I learned a good bit.
Tell us 1 new thing you learned
Protect our groundwater from pollution.
Protect wetlands. They are natures storm water storage systems and help recharge ground water.
Hi. I'd just like to clarify why it matters if we introduce a crossover directly to the rainwater storage tank and risk damaging the biofilm, when we are going to run the system to a filtration and purification unit anyway.
Can you use creek water to fill your tanks to supplement your roof run off in areas where rain is in limited supply?
Can terra cotta tile roof be used to collect rainwater?
Every home and business should install a rain water collection and storage system along with solar panels.
Even in areas where rain is infrequent it is crazy to waste the little rain that does fall and waste it.
We need to stop planting green lawns and switch to local native plantings around homes.
It is crazy to plant lawns and build golf courses in dry desert areas. We waste too much water and electricity.
How do I prevent the black mold from forming at the bottom of the rain barrel?
Is it okay to add hydrogen peroxide to my rain barrel? The rain from the barrel is strictly for my indoor/outdoor plants.
Video has too much B.S. before getting to how to do this.

What about painting my roof with a food grade paint??? I know it's expensive but have you any information on this available?
I got a farm
3 houses
3 barns
I got lots of roof so 30,000 should do it and not worry
Appreciate the information. For the sake of audio clarity, it would be great if you worked to avoid smacking your lips. It comes through as a sharp sound on the audio track. Probably would be less noticeable if I wasn't wearing headphones, but thought you would like to know. Again, thanks for sharing this information.
Thank you, John. May you let us know one new thing you learned?
@@GreenHomeInstitute Didn't know for example that the biolayer (film at the bottom) would be expected and normal. In a highly processed and sterile world, it's easy to think of all microbes as bad. Also had not thought about contamination from the roof preventing healthy microbes in your water tank. It does make you wonder if that should be legal if it makes the water unsafe for drinking. His point about planning the conveyance for areas which would be disruptive to add later makes total sense, too, even if the system isn't going to be built right away.
@@JGoodwin If that roof type should be legal?
@@GreenHomeInstitute Yes. If a roofing product makes the water coming off the roof unsafe to drink, it's unclear why it should be allowed in the marketplace.
Where do I get the tanks from
There are many online to search from. Depends on what you need. Good luck!
The ones I find are not like that
May you be blessed
I am a veteran that lives off grid on a very fixed income is there anyone or anybody that can help me a rainwater collection system as I stated before I do not have a lot of money
@@SpiritBearRanch So because you're a veteran you expect to get everything for free? Lol...
