Awesome life philosophy CC. Hello from New Zealand. I'm always interested in the differing landscapes you go out in - especially where they are different from here. Also what season you are in. I'm thinking you are on East coast now as opposed to former desert site. Your use of a fire indicates wet weather period so no forest fire hazard. I believe it's fall there right now.

I loved your "speech" about your life. Many of us, especially us older folks (early sixties), have had those moments where we just suddenly realized where we needed to be in life. Kudos to you to figure that out in your early 40's. You are a natural at what you do. I for one have learned a lot from you, watching your videos, absorbing info, practicing tying knots, etc. Your careful attention to detail, finesse, focus and concise description of what you are doing is phenomenal. Teaching people your skills is an extremely honorable profession in my opinion. I was a carpenter/home builder my whole life and painstakingly trained many young men over the years. Some took well to it and some didn't. But I also chased money for the first part of my life, had a money-hungry wife that always wanted more, a million dollar hand-built home, etc. which all fell apart in the 2008 "recession". Best thing that ever happened to me. Lost my big house, my wife, my company, and now I just flip houses at my own pace. I do everything, a little at a time. I'm happy as a clam, have a wonderful woman in my life, don't have any stress. It's definitely not about the money. That I can tell you for sure. I'm glad you're happy. You're a good man. Thank you for doing what you do. It matters to many of us.

Another good one again. You’re right, if you’re not happy with your life, and how you’re affecting or being affected by others in your day to day comings and goings, you get in a rut, both psychologically and spiritually. That’s a dangerous thing that most people don’t really think about. That’s how depression can start, how relationships can become toxic and/or collapse, and at the extreme end, people take their own lives. A lot of people think that the concept of a person taking care of themselves mentally and physically first is selfish and self centered, but if you’re not happy with your own life, and how you are mentally and physically with the world/universe, you’re really not all that good with helping and guiding others in their day to day meanderings through every day life’s BS. I hope this makes sense. Thanks again, you’re a real inspiration to me.

22:45 you just ripped a page out of me and read it out loud. The similarities are undeniable but understandable too. The part about having peaked and then everything else afterwards being below you is the truth. To anyone reading this that hasn’t had those experiences, it probably sounds like pure ego and arrogance, but it isn’t because you think you are better than people, but that you are better than situations. You’ve been a part of a tribe that taught you special and valuable things about yourself and once you leave that tribe, all you find is a world full of petty, uninitiated people whose only motivation is monetary. It doesn’t take long to realize you are above that situation. I apologize If I have butchered what the meaning was to what you were saying and I’ll be glad to delete this if I did. Good on you Corporal for finding your happiness, I’ve been trying to do the same and this was a very motivating pep talk.

Great chat. I know exactly what you mean. I chased the money working as a field technician for years on industrial equipment. Got old. Worked as a service tech, but hated it. Did the evil retail for thing for a while. Now I’ve been hired as a field instructor for things like first aid, outdoor courses, safety, etc. I also get to do ops in the most remote places in Northern Canada. Doing what or where, I can’t say, but it certainly is outstanding! It’s good to like going to work. Good crew helps, too. Awesome instructors to work with. Glad you’re happy with life. And nice to see that paracord slay in the pan flappers. Take care.

I was an Air Force medic , after Nam I became a carpenter. I gave away everything that wouldn’t fit into a backpack and my dog and I set out across the country, hitching and walking, camping along the way . Sometimes people would give me a ride and let me eat with them roll my bedroll on their floor and spend the night. I carried my hammer with me to do some work to pay them back . The lessons learned always taught me I was in the right place at the right time and I had what I needed to get by.

My absolute favorite video. This Reminds me of camping with the boy scouts when my scoutmaster was around. I remember being so miserable and sad and not really having any kind of fun. I was bullied throughout my scouting membership and not realizing it until about 3 years later. We went out somewhere in Tennessee on an abandoned campground and set up camp beside the water, it was very quiet and we were well away from modern society and the constant rat-race of life. I remember the crackle of the campfire and seeing my Scoutmaster Philip set in his chair. It was like he belonged there, he had a grin on his face as he gazed into the fire and slowly drifted off to sleep as the other boys were already in bed. But I never really understood, I mean why would we be out in this mosquito infested place with ticks and venomous snakes, why would we or rather "I" want to be so alone when I could be home playing my Xbox and drinking chocolate milk. Philip was like a father to me as my dad worked a 5-9 job so he never really had a chance to raise me, I joined boy scouts when I was 12 I want to say I was either 12 it 13 at the time and really didn't care about being outside. As I progressed through the ranks I began noticing how the little things in life matters, wherever it being tying knots or going through the order of the arrow and doing those duties. I didn't truly notice it until Philip was diagnosed with cancer and slowly deteriorated and finally passing in 2017. It hit me hard what he was trying to do, he was trying to turn us into men. If we had done something wrong or broke something we would pay it back, if we worked hard we were rewarded with......nothing because that is what we are supposed to do. (Although we could tell Philip was proud, though he never showed it) We were the cream of the crop. Everyone knew of Troop 14 and the draconian Scoutmaster, and how awesome the troop was, we made people jealous, horrible so that they would cheat in summer camp games to beat us. I will never forget Troop 14 and the lessons its taught me, and I will never forget the man who pushed me to my limits. The man that was the incarnation of Lord Robert Baden Powell. I earned my Eagle Scout this year and made an honorary flag retirement pit in his name for my project. I spent 4 days in the 98-degree sun and scorching heat hammering crossties into place and placing bricks for the pit, it was hard and I questioned myself and in the end, I earned it. I will never forget Phil and the life lessons he taught me and seeing these videos helps keep Philip alive in my memory. So thank you for all you do (thank you for serving) and please, stay with it. Thank you.

    Good video !
I can relate well with most of your talk. But when you live in a small rural town and have a family, you take the best paying job you can and think it is the right thing. In my case, it was dead wrong and made 16 yrs absolutely terrible, for me, my health and tough on family.
Got married at 20 to the love of my life. Drafted little over two years later. All but 6 of us infantry, then Nam. I was in the 1/8th 1st Cav. and we didn't go in and were understaffed Platoon ( 22-24 men) I was in weapons squad, the whole time (except for about 5 weeks ) just me and the machine gunner. That is not a squad and you get lack of sleep real quick, with only 2 to 3 hours of sleep max. I was told recently that 90% or more were all diagnosed with PTSS attributed mostly to lack of sleep, before adding in the rest of the stress of combat and Air Assaults. Even before I came home with terrible migraines , I was not the happy go lucky guy, she had married. But she stuck with me , for these 53,almost 54 yrs, and we have battled with Agent Orange and still are. blah, blah, didn't aim to write a book.....sorry

Great life lesson Corporal. I knew there had to be a reason I have connected with you and your videos. You just sang my song. 41 years ago, I started chasing the money and made plenty, but was never happy with my career life. 34 years ago, I took a vow of poverty and went to work in LE. I didn't have the money, but I had 33 happy working years. I am now retired and can honestly say I would never give up happiness in work or life for more money than I need. If a person can contribute to others and be happy in doing it, they are rich anyhow. Thanks.

      Steve Kiss,
Right on ! When your young, sometimes you think 10-20 years isn't that long to not be happy, if your making the money. But you don't seem to know, that life is really short. Also you never know when your health may fail do to unforeseen diseases, cancer, etc. . Life is short, go for happy or content .

For a certain type of man, adventure is like oxygen; they must have it. The adventure can come in all kinds of shapes and sizes. Soldiering, hunting, building, destroying, it goes on and on. When man loses his sense of adventure, the need to experience the adventure, he is spent. That's NOT always a bad thing; no one lives forever, old dogs teach the young pups. For me adventure gets me out of the bed in the mornings. Unfortunately life makes it hard to support family in experiencing the adventure unless the family is the adventure. Bushcrafting for me is an adventure; survival preparedness satisfies my need to protect and provide for my family. If things go wrong, my wife and kids will look to me to be their hero. I can't fail them.

Yours is USMC and mind was the USA. I wish you can do more of the talks in ur vids nowadays, but I know you gotta keep it within 20 mins give or take. Anyhow, I guess you have found your calling! I really enjoyed your patience with the fire drill. I thought I sensed some frustration from you with the increase in pressure about 30-45 seconds from the smoke, and then smoke. I find it the least enjoyable way I have ever started a fire so I always am impressed when someone does it so well. Well done sir, well done!
