This literally sounds like its played on a harpsichord like how bach originally wrote it for. Amazing interpretation, good job!
Thank you!
Actually it was written for the "well tempered piano" but I agree amazing performance !!
@@Joules3.14 “Clavier”, not “Klavier”.

Bach, my favourite composer. Amazing performance of the BWV 847!
Thanks so much!
Idk why, I always "knew" how this should sound like. This is the first time I actually heard it. Awesome interpretation, totally selfless but deeply human as well. Brava!
Thank you so much for your lovely comment. Great to read you enjoyed it so much
If you want to know what it (really) should sound like, have a listen at the interpretation of the late Gustav Leonhardt on harpsichord.
His “interpretation” is closest to taking the musician out of the equation, IMHO. The result is listening to pure music.
If you’re not familiar with harpsichord, you might have to get used to that, though. Some people, like me, are hooked in an instant, others never get the hang of it.
All in all, this (her) interpretation, on piano(!), comes very close to ideal. Almost, almost(!), no personal interpretation, just letting the music flow. That is how it should be.
Very good. I want to listen to more of her, to see (hear) how she plays the other pieces. I can only hope for more like this.
@@JDO-u5f but bro this interpretation is pretty damned faithful to a harpsichord rendition.
Up to now I strongly believed, that a piano can never replace the harpsichord, Bach originally wrote for. However, this interpretation by Nathalie Matthys proved me wrong!
What an amazing review. Thanks so much!

Ich bin hin und weg.
Bach ist der Vater der Musik!
Thank you so much for this, I enjoyed it so much it isn't expressible in words! I've been searching around for AGES and finally I found a decent, no, not just decent, AMAZING example of it! Thank you so much, then again!
For those that says she plays too quick; well she alters temp and all voices can be heard! Her articulation is excellent too. 🎉
This piece is forever. Doesn't sound like baroque at all. Bach's channeling some future here that's way beyond even 2020.
Really? I feel like if its played on a violin it would sound baroque. I believe Vivaldi did a similar pattern in his cello concerto
it sounds very baroque. the epitome of what baroque. idk what you're smoking mate but i want it
@@Zimzamzoom95 Just your average classical music enthusiast showing off his unique understanding of bach.
@@Rodrigo-me6nq what are you trying to say
@@Zimzamzoom95 i think hes trying to say the guy is being pretentious and over analyzing the piece
Schade drum. - Once again a pianist who believes that music doesn't need time and space to breathe, although with the fugue she herself provides proof of how well it could work. Equally sad and pointless this Prelude speed record, for what? One could easily demonstrate frantic tempos with a musically irrelevant etude, but a work with depth? Too bad. -
Wow, the emotion evoked in the phrasing! Moving, but still subtle enough to never overwhelm the overall rhythm that remains highly structured. This way, the essence of baroque music is retained. I've played the guitar arrangement of a different prelude years ago, but that advice on retaining the baroque soul of the piece still stayed with me.
Thanks for sharing this performance !
Thank you for your lovely comment! Glad to read you enjoyed it 😊

Play the prelude half time so you got music. The fugue sometimes the bass not hearable at all, the soprano rules all other voices. Piano teachers spread bad interpretations.
This is the only record I found on UA-cam has a pace comparable to Richter’s record.
Goodness, that was my freaking first impression as well. On that note, as someone who only recently learned about the brilliance of Richter - _who the hell is that guy_ ?
Unbelievable! Exactly! Respect 🤗
I'm agree with you except the second part more "presto" in the Richter's version.
A brilliant performance from a very talented pianist. A pleasure to watch and listen.
Eventhough I will always prefer the harpsichord interpretation over a piano for Bach's pieces, I agree with al of those that stated that you played it marvellously! Instead of trying to imitate a harpsichord with a piano and/or channel Franz Lizst playing Bach, you just hit "the notes at the right time", as Bach himself used to say, and the beautiful music showed itself. Bravo!
Love your comment! I also prefer the harpsichord version and personally think it should be what Bach supposed. But this performance is also quite amazing!
Absolutley fantastc!! You have my tears..and I am an expert of listening...marvelous!!!😪😇🥰

Pepijn Kramer yeah that’s what I was thinking. Striking hard but also quick like a “staccato” feel to it
@@alexdoesntlikeyoutubethatmuch Techically impressive and flawless too. But it also leaves little room voor expression (volume wise). ua-cam.com/video/JcFHuUJE0mU/v-deo.html like this. Personally I am not quite in favor of the mathematical school/approach to Bach. Bach must have loved music so I generally like the versions with swing/emotion in it better. But this is nonetheless impressive!
@@peregrin71 well i find beauty in the strict way of playing bach (with every note strictly separated with equal amount of time like a harpsichord) it can easily sound messy otherwise
Weird to listen.. I always considered only Gould played WTC worst than Richter..

The Prelude is so odd. It challenges all the conventional melodies. But at the same time it has a unique sense of melody. That's the best way I can describe it.

The girl looks good for sex but not for producing Bach’s melodies
I can't even do it at half of this tempo 💀
muy buena interpretación! Felicidades
Excellent playing !! But....I have two problems with how Bach arranged this piece. Within this great prelude, exists a moving set of beautiful, nuanced and deeply emotional harmonies, created the forefingers and thumbs of both hands, while the remaining fingers hit tonic or root notes and the pinky of the right hand plinks out the top staccato melody notes. This is
arranged as a very mechanical, unexpressive machine-like version of what is actually a very emotional, deeply expressive piece of music. This emotional expressiveness is portrayed through these moving harmonies, however neither these harmonies nor the melody notes are able to be expressive because of the tempo and the mechanical arrangement of this piece.
Instead, it would be far more beautiful to hear this composition played with sustained melody notes, against sustained moving chords. Bach invented very advanced harmonies, many of which are found in only modern classical music today. He was three hundred years ahead of his time, but because of the technical and complicated nature of his counterpoint style, keyboard complexity often became more prominent than the beauty of the music itself. Additionally, Bach played this on pipe organ, which further hid the harmonies of the sound.
For Bach worshipers, I'm sure that my criticism will be considered to be outrageous !! A significant "sacrilege" to their musical god, who I also love. But I'm quite certain, knowing Bach's music, history and personality as the great composer and improviser, he would be the first to agree with me about this revelation. I'm certain he would appreciate arranging this particular prelude as both a technical keyboard Baroque construction, as well as an expressive legato string and woodwind arrangement. Certainly the composition lends itself to both.
Glad you liked my performance! :-) and thank you for sharing your point of view!
I love this performance! I was studying the fugue part of this and I'm not really sure which notes to play staccato. I will listen to this more and notate to help me play this better! :)
So glad you like it! Best of luck with the fugue, you've got this 😊
I would describe it as shy though ambitious, delicate but expensive, refined but simultaneously liberal .....blah blah blah and I could go on writing the cr@p which music snobs always write. Fact is I just liked it.. OK.

The voicing was perfect, however, I felt that the tempo was a bit too fast for me. Just my opinion, i'm sure most people enjoy it. I also like how the end of the prelude has some elements of the fugue which is some kind of 'spoiler' to the fugue. Wonderful performance!
A bit too fast: exactly. You can't play so fast the prelude on a harpsichord.
@@jean-pierreromain2423 Sometimes is the pursuit of speed, musicality is lost.
With such a style, we could agree with the French writer Colette who talked about Bach music as "sewing machine music"...
@@jean-pierreromain2423
This is a piano transcription.
It should be played with a pianistic mindset, such didn't develop properly until Beethoven came to the scene, even Mozart didn't explore all the possibilities of the instrument.
Brilliant ! I’m still learning it! This is very inspiring ! Hope I can play like her!
She misses a note and doesn’t make up for it with any sort of pianistic or musical uniqueness. Just a million dollar piano is all
You make music with the piano. You are not showing off playing the piano. Thank you.
¡felicidades! que buena ejecución.
I keep coming back to this performance. Beautiful interpretation
Why Lol!? Of all performances you choose this one? Is it because you’re learning? Then you can do better. This is beginner’s interpretation with shortcuts, listen to a staccato’d (BUT not necessarily staccato, not being bias here) brilliant version that distinguishes the voices without shortcuts
Yeah, well, so you have a different preference, which is okay, of course.
Could you give an example of a staccato’d version you prefer, and maybe a tiny little bit of context why you prefer it that way?

Glad you enjoyed! Have fun discovering the endless repertoire ☺️
You are worthless
The c major one is beautiful this one much more technical so you need to have some preparation such as scales and arpeggios jsut in case there is tension
Im still working to match your speed on this piece. I'm at about 90%. The accents are difficult to hit at high speeds haha
Make sure to keep your wrists flexible 😊
Great job on this
loved the fugue interpretation, and the prelude too. However, in the prelude, there has to be a difference in the tempo between the first part and the presto part. Otherwise, I really liked it
Glad to read you overall enjoyed! 😊
Bravo!!
She played 0:49 - 0:55 wrong. In the times of J.S. Bach, there was no Pedal and that’s why you don’t play it with one until now. I’d say she’s definitely not bad, but that is a wrong interpretation. Also, you need to play it slower so you can tell the difference between the starting tempo and the Presto part.
Oh dear goodness.
In times of Bach the piano wasnt popular enough, he didn't compose for it.
To play a transcription for piano like if it was harpsichord is a novice mistake, or plain lack of musicianship, transcriptions have pianistic markings, including phrasing and pedal indications, you're interpreting the transcription, not the original work, for that you would have to play it on it's intended instrument.
Thats a valid point, but you cannot “interpret” a tempo, since it is not to interpret unlike other things, for example agocic playing (which wasnt right in bachs pieces since that was a very important characteristic of his pieces, wich require technical and interpreting skill in other ways).
Came for the dress, stayed for the music.
Well done. But why does she ignore the "Presto" indiciation in bar 28 of the prelude? Because she started too fast...
Prelude is not difficult to play- it's so comfortable, but in it and in fuge you should to separate voices really well to make piece really beautiful and interesting. Also prelude can be played more restrained

Excellent! When I was about 18 I used to play it this fast and my teacher would say SLOWER... I admire the dedication to speed on the prelude.
George Lenzer At this level of ability, there is no better or worse, only examples.
I made an in-depth analysis of this fugue on my channel. It's really amazing to see how Bach uses themes from the opening bars and make something sublime out of it.
Sometimes God makes gifts, as hands for example...
🤔
Got no clue as to how any of this had anything to do with this performance.
You can leave god out of the equation here. And that hands are “his(?) gift” totally doesn’t make sense.

it is a shame that the prelude is so short. we need all their variations.
Disagree. Variations first of all are optional (if they aren’t Bach will write them out to the full extend). Second, adding a variation is only useful if it adds something to the performance, which most of the time it does not really do.
Anyway, feel free to listen to this piece over and over again. Or put it on repeat. That way you will REALLY get to know the piece.

Probably the most generic interpretation on UA-cam. Correctly played, but boring. A tempo that is too fast to be tasteful, but not fast enough to be impressive. Heavy, mechanical accents, no phrasing, no sense of melody... At least the recitative section of the prelude is somewhat interesting. The fugue is just as generic.
