Seriously this masterpiece literally changed my life, it changed my entire outlook on the world, I am a completely different person after playing this for the first time, I even stopped hiding from the world from behind my hair by getting it cut short. This game gave my faith in humanity after thinking that it was a lost cause. This game gave me hope for the future.
+Sun Tzu And that song at 1:16:43, at the end of the game, every time I hear that I feel like Pavlov's dog, I can't help but cry, even in this video I cried when that song came on. And the one at 1:18:35, I have to listen to that song in school just to not breakdown into a depression.
***** - Usually, these kind of documentaries are only included in special editions of games--and yes, some people may buy those special editions for the purpose of having and watching these documentaries. The first time I came across a "making of" was for Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (Special Edition) when the game was launched for the PS2. I grabbed a copy.
Id never had thought a video game would be one of the most memorable experiences in my life, the way Naughty Dog constructed it to take me through an emotional ride of tears and happiness. Thank you to everyone one who contributed to it, the directors, designers, actors, writers, fans, and everyone reading. You've all made this a beautiful masterpiece, and I am breath-taken by how this was all pulled off.
From Crash Bandicoot to Uncharted and Jak and Daxter, Naughty Dog has and always will be my favorite game studio. They molded and started my gaming childhood and I will always consider them one of the few who can make a game that one can call "art."
+Kevin Glazier nah a sequel can never beat the first movie/game etc. I mean that's not saying I won't love it, but the first one will be pretty hard to beat in comparison
I love seeing behind the scenes footage of video games, but this entire documentary is probably my favourite. Seeing how everything came together, the research they went through, how they talk so passionately about the characters and the story - it must have been incredible to be a part of this. But I can imagine the response to this game was even more so.
this game has been an absolutely wonderful experience, and i keep finding new things to appreciate both in my own replays, and in seeing videos like this that show just how much work went into The Last of Us
I've been playing games since 1991 and for the whole 24 years I've played all sorts and this game captivated me more than most! I can honestly say this is the best game I've ever played and I've played some great games
It's funny how Ashley says she is not 14 and the whole age difference, but she acts the youngest of all of them. You know it's fun to see her just be herself, be young at heart.
20:27 I cried a little when I walked upon the edge of that building and saw the giraffes wandering around the city, meek and innocent and joyous in the land of the wild greens. Absolutely beautiful.
Wow, that was a really nice surprise to have all this to watch tonight. Makes me want to play the game all over again! Was great first time through but when you see just how much goes into these games it makes you appreciate them so much more! Thanks Naughty Dog and Sony for this amazing video!
As a person who wants to write the script/story for video games this is extremely useful and inspiring. I love the process you guys went through and it showed me how much work it takes from multiple people to create a beautiful story that made me cry like bitch.
***** ill buy it on a ps4 next year because none of the ps4 games i want do not start coming out tell next year. paying 300-400 dollars just to play a pretty the last of us just to have the ps4 gather dust after playing it isnt worth it for me
+ World End That's the way everyone who bought it on ps3 played it .I'm a pc gamer 99% of the time but I do own a ps4 for exclusives , and I know others who who do the same thing. The last of us is one of my favorite single player games.I've tried ps now on pc it 's pretty cool, I had a 7 day trial .lol
I loved this game so much to the point where I was having withdrawals from not being able to play it anymore, I just simply couldn't shake that it was over, I missed it that much. I beat the original game and the DLC on normal difficulty along with survivor difficulty, and still think about the experience I had to this day. That's how you know you've played a great game, when you have an adventure that sticks in your head to the point where you're thinking about it daily. Thank you Naughty Dog, for creating such a beautiful work of art.
He is IMO the best male voice actor. First time I heard him was in FF13 as Snow and as a voice actor he was awsome and in a lot of other games, flawless. And he kinda looks like snow lol.
I've loved Naughty Dog ever since i started playing Crash Bandicoot when i was 6, but watching this video, you truly get the sense of how much passion went into making this game. I applaud them several times over for their achievements over the years. Truly one of the best studios in entertainment business.
I just beat the game, it's VERY amazing. I support the people who work in what they love, and the results are AWESOME. The example is this game, look at all the people working with passion, from game designers to the musician. I REALLY hope to see Last of US on PS4 with Joel and Ellie. I have to go, the DLC just downloaded. I think I'm LastOfUsLieber now! :D
Yeah, unlike these huge game developers tyranting over their actors, game designers, etc and rush the game just to make a buck for the holidays.. (cough)Activision(cough)Treyarch(cough)
43:18--Hana Hayes is in the zone. This video seems to show that the game was a challenge for just about everyone involved here. The actors; the writers; the lighting team, where one guy said the game was "a master's course in itself." The challenge clearly made the whole game better, though.
Fantastic, well crafted documentary! Thank you! I Just finished playing this masterpiece yesterday. What an incredible, gritty, beautiful work of art & storytelling; an emotional ride, greatly enhanced by sublime design and direction.
after watching this I think you can easily say that its an honor to play this masterpiece, simply amazing how much work it contains, how many people are involved and how much attention they paid to the story, gameplay, the environment, the motion cap., the acting and especially the outstanding soundtrack, without any doubt it contains perfection in almost every aspect ! Im sure we will get other legends of naughty dog in future as well, thank you for everything about The Last of Us
Personally, I'd love to see this story continued. It's not like Naughty Dog would butcher the sequel, either. Every sequel made for Uncharted, Jak and Daxter and Crash Bandicoot were fantastic and never deviated from the original meaning of the game. If they do a sequel, I trust it will be just as amazing because it's a Naughty Dog game.
Or Ellie discovers the truth, has a fallout with Joel and Joel dies in an attack before Ellie has a change to make things right with him. Sounds like something they would do.
+Piekenier It's confirmed Ellie knows the truth. The devs said the original ending to TLoU was that she would believe Joel's lie, but they changed it because it "didn't feel honest". www.playstationlifestyle.net/2013/06/18/major-spoilers-naughty-dog-talks-the-last-of-us-beginning-ending-and-slightly-alternate-ending/ "The original ending that for a long time we discussed is Ellie would believe the lie and you’d see them walking off to Tommy’s town and the camera would track up and you’d feel like, they’re going to be okay. It was about a week before we shot that scene and we thought, this isn’t honest, this doesn’t feel right, Ellie would know, I don’t buy it, we have to change this."
I agree. I think Naughty Dog is my favorite game-development company. I've been a Crash Bandicoot fan since I was like 4, and now they're coming up with these amazing cinematic titles. I'm just amazed by the artistry every time
The music in this game is sooooo beautiful. Probably my favorite soudtrack of ALL time. Any medium. I really appreciated being able to see this part of the process as well. In addition to having a beautiful game, they made a great "making of" documentary as well. Amazing game. I love it.
I don't understand the thinking of anyone who could give this game less than a perfect score (knowing full well every game will have some type of imperfection or glitch). No other game has made me feel as engaged and in the moment and absolutely ignorant of what time it is in the real world (except maybe Skyrim for that last one). There are so many different components from the absolutely brilliant voice and motion acting to the well-timed dialogue within gameplay that develops the relationship between Joel and Ellie to a level that I was losing my shit and crying anxiously on the last level not knowing what was going to happen. I finished the game for the first time three days ago, and I can't stop thinking about it. I think I'm in love. Thank you so much for all the effort and sweat you put into this work of art, Naughty Dog. I will never forget the experience that is The Last of Us.
This will always be my favorite game of all time. Story is just amazing. The music also is simply beautiful. The music helps the mood and helps the player feel the moment.
This game is great and it's one of the most powerful experiences in modern media. I always tear up when I think about the great character progression of Joel and Ellie.
Incredible to see the contribution from so many departments. Usually "Making of" vids are directors saying why they liked this or that about their game, but here so many others got credit for their work. Also, when I saw Gustavo I thought, "that's a man who *feels* his music." Then he goes, "I can't read or write music, I compose by playing..." Rock on.
I've been gaming since Atari, and I can easily say that "The Last of Us" is the best game I've ever played. I'm about to take my third trip through the game, after I play the "Left Behind" DLC. These guys thought of every aspect of this game, and it shows. To say that I'm addicted would be an understatement.
I seriously i do not understand how anybody can not like this video. This video was amazing i honestly did not know how dedicated these guys are, naughty dog has always been my favourite game company and now i understand why. I love the Uncharted series but the last of us took over as my number 1 favourite game of all time. I cannot wait for uncharted ps4 keep up the awesomeness naughty dog
I never finished a making of, but this was really good. It shows a great developing process. The improvising, the effort, the feelings and the all the different specialisations with all the difficulties. Great job!
44:06 Oh my god that has got to be such a sad thing to hear where you have to redo that whole scene, you have to get those tears a flowing again by thinking up a painful memory or something ... i wouldn't be able to do it. it would crush me to be honest with you.
Even tho they will probably never see this. I just want to thank everyone who played a part in the making The Last of Us. It is truly something more than a game and it was beautiful every minute of the game. Thank you and it was an honor to play your masterpiece.
I love how at 32:58, Earl throws Troy a prop rifle that's supposed to be a shotgun in the game, then just pulls out what looks like a real pump shotgun
+Mert Boduç It kinda isn't irrelevant because it shows how touchy he is about the subject of his daughter dying. It also reinforces the relationship Joel and Ellie do end up having knowing that he's comfortable with her being a daughter figure.
43:10 - 47:00 that attention to detail and the amount of emotion each of the actors put into this is just insane, all of that together made for one of the most heart wrenching and realistic death scenes i've ever seen in a video game and maybe even a movie
What I love about this game is that you could go for ages without seeing any 'infected' which I found very unique about the game, rather than encountering zombie after zombie throughout the full course. Amazing stuff.
Over the past 30 years, played many, many games over multiple systems. The Last of Us for mine, is easily in the top 10 of the very best ever. A Tour de Force. As is this doco. Thanks for uploading.
I love how people are still amazed at how much work goes into making a game. I like to see people's faces when I tell them how much effort goes into making a game that is fun, visually appealing and has a good story for you to tell. And I really hope they get a lot more respect for their creators.
I love the quick development of Nolan's character. Picture, voice, done. Like 15 seconds and they had the whole character. I have complete faith in Naughty Dog that Part II is going to be yet another masterpiece. Nobody makes games like they do.
Thank you for making The Last of Us, it is one of the best games I have ever played and I am a PC gamer mainly. I bought my PS3 only for this game and it was more than worth it.
I love how the infected aren't zombies (technically) which seperates the game from other survival post apocoliptic games and gives the story even more realism for it makes you think that if cordyceps was to become exposed to humans for a long enough time to evolve to effect us we could suffer a similar fate
I've never played the game but watch other play. Yet I still watch this video for the 3rd time. It's just so fascinating to watch the process of making the game. Especially the one scene with Joel and his daughter Ashely. It's amazing how every person, animators, artists, actors, musician all had a major part in making this one game.
The only word to truly sum up this game is "masterpiece." The folks at Naughty Dog always produce incredible stuff and The Last of Us will likely live on as a crucial piece of gaming history. Hats off to Naughty Dog!
during my playthrough i had to end my gaming one night just after ellie was kidnapped, i spent the whole of the next day at work WORRYING about Ellie and hoping she was ok!! that has NEVER happened to me before in a game, ever. i was still buzzing about the game for days afterwards. It was an honour to play this game
Literally just finished the game today and I freaking loved it!!! Plus the bonus of this documentary was just a really good way to round off the experience. This was easily one of the best games I have ever played!!!
unfortunately best part of knowing that Naughty Dog finished Uncharted (as much as we dont want it to end) is atleast they will come out with another epic game series.
This has yet to be one of the most interesting and intriguing documentaries that I have ever watched. These people at the video game development team must have the coolest jobs ever and I find everything about this game to be highly fascinating. And the music by Gustavo Santaolalla is just really beautiful, to say the least. Neil Druckman is completely brilliant.
This is just amazing, it shows you all the work that goes into these amazing triple A titles. I feel like more love and effort is put into these games then the hollywood garbage movies they shovel out non stop. That comment about the snapple lid was hilarious by the way.
Just finished the game for the first time(I know right late) and I have to say it is by far the single best piece of media I have ever consumed. Music to movies to games this is that best of anything I have ever seen it is through and through a absolute masterpiece it's sad that all games can't be this good
The only thing I'd love more than this, as far as a documentary-esque thing from Naughty Dog would be to be able to see the entire mocap process. I want to see everything. It's always so amazing to watch the actors' raw performances.
I didn't think I'd watch this whole video, but I could not turn it off. And I still want more! This game has resonated with me so deeply. Part II will be the reason I'll invest in a ps4. Next to SH2, this is my favorite game. Thank you, Naughty Dog, for creating such a masterpiece!
We need more documentary about video games......
RookieN08 Troy Baker recommended one I think about Donkey Kong in the One year later panel
+Sun Tzu If a 2nd game is made, I'll the happiest fella in the world
***** :D me to
I'll honestly be sooooo happy
***** The thing is, this game was so perfect I don't know what they could to to improve on it apart from some AI and online features.
This is amazing! Thank you for posting it for free.
Hey Phil.
Thanks for sharing this, Phil! Good stuff.
OMG. It's Phil! I CAN SAY SOMETHING TO HIM!

This is so amazing! thank you Sony PlayStation for sharing this valuable experience!
I love these behind the scenes things, the creation process is fascinating
I like them and don't. Neat to see the process, but I so badly want to be a part of it. A dream job.
Same here.
Just finished the game for the first time. I can honestly say it was one of the best entertainment experiences I've ever had.
Gustavo is an amazing musician and very inspiring to hear what he said here. one of the best sound tracks ever to one of the best games ever.

and now there's a part II coming!!!!
From Crash Bandicoot to Uncharted and Jak and Daxter, Naughty Dog has and always will be my favorite game studio. They molded and started my gaming childhood and I will always consider them one of the few who can make a game that one can call "art."
Thank you for making this available to everyone Sony. I love these "Making of" Documentaries.
I agree, thank you Sony and thank you Naughty Dog for an incredibly beautiful title. Here's to the next one.
Alexander Pennant Thanks you Sony and Naughty Dog.
What do you think about The Last Of Us 2 ??? I would like and you ?
This will be forever my favourite game.
I will be obsessed with it for eternity.
Yeah me too !
me toooow!!!! ^-^

I honestly dont even mind if they dont make another TLOU, I'm content with what has already been delivered
Well, a sequel is confirmed now
It's funny how Ashley says she is not 14 and the whole age difference, but she acts the youngest of all of them. You know it's fun to see her just be herself, be young at heart.
Well said
Beautiful to see how much effort and passion went into this game. Greatest game ever.
Honestly when I look back and see this there is really no other gaming platform in the world that could make me happier...
Never have i watched a game documentary but this game i don't have words can't get enough :)
you should check out a game documentary called "Indie Game".
20:27 I cried a little when I walked upon the edge of that building and saw the giraffes wandering around the city, meek and innocent and joyous in the land of the wild greens. Absolutely beautiful.
"We didn't want it to be Drake.. Because Drake eating people, that's.. that's a whole other game." *Sips coffee.*
Don't get any ideas now.
I'm pretty sure this is my favorite video on youtube. Literally every aspect of the making of this game, I adore.
Wow, that was a really nice surprise to have all this to watch tonight. Makes me want to play the game all over again! Was great first time through but when you see just how much goes into these games it makes you appreciate them so much more! Thanks Naughty Dog and Sony for this amazing video!

I had no idea Nolan North was in this until I saw the IMDB page, he puts on such a good evil voice.
I love your channel!
"Waaaah! So good!" 1:22:37
Ashley couldn't have said it better x)
Sarah's death always makes me cry... I cannot hold myself together with that scene!
The soundtrack at 48:00 tho. Mannnn, it gets me everytime. So beautiful.
I feel bad for the xbox and PC gamers that will never get to experience this masterpiece first hand

pretty jealous actually lol

The challenge clearly made the whole game better, though.
I don't believe I just watched the whole video. I had come here only to see how they made some scenes and then, things happened!
This is brilliant! Thanks for making this. :)

Thank you Naughty Dog for one of the most incredible experiences of my life

That guy worked his lifeforce off in this game, you can see it on his face. o.o
Mort Onmaz i lold hard
Nolan's transition at 27:50 gets me every time man. Straight chills, he's so talented.
I don't think any game has ever gotten my heart rate up as much as The Last of Us.

I seriously i do not understand how anybody can not like this video. This video was amazing i honestly did not know how dedicated these guys are, naughty dog has always been my favourite game company and now i understand why. I love the Uncharted series but the last of us took over as my number 1 favourite game of all time. I cannot wait for uncharted ps4 keep up the awesomeness naughty dog
people that dislike this video are secretly crying because they bought an x box and are not able to play such an awesome game.
Rocky hahaha you know what you probably right on that. games like the last of us makes me proud to be a loyal sony fan.
Definitely best game of the year, hope to see your work as soon as possible Naughty Dog :)
I love how at 32:58, Earl throws Troy a prop rifle that's supposed to be a shotgun in the game, then just pulls out what looks like a real pump shotgun
glad they change the line to mighty thin ice it had way more impact than the original script... one word is all it can take to make or break something
+Mert Boduç It kinda isn't irrelevant because it shows how touchy he is about the subject of his daughter dying. It also reinforces the relationship Joel and Ellie do end up having knowing that he's comfortable with her being a daughter figure.
+Josiah Ronning Exactly right. If that line is irrelevant then I would like to know what isn't.

Thanks for uploading.
the part about the music is pretty inspiring
I love how people are still amazed at how much work goes into making a game. I like to see people's faces when I tell them how much effort goes into making a game that is fun, visually appealing and has a good story for you to tell.
And I really hope they get a lot more respect for their creators.
The Sarah death scene made me cry, Jesus. these people are the best actors on earth.
I don't ever want to forget this game and these characters. And I hope they'll make a return in future titles.
Nolan north : legend in games
Troy baker : legend in games
The last of us: legendary
I love the quick development of Nolan's character. Picture, voice, done. Like 15 seconds and they had the whole character. I have complete faith in Naughty Dog that Part II is going to be yet another masterpiece. Nobody makes games like they do.
As much as i love my xbox, who else thinks this is the best game they have ever played
Absolutely fascinating documentary about one of the best, immersive, heart-felt video games ever.
This game was truly fantastic congrats on GOTY and thanks for this very entreating behind the scenes.
Embarrass your life you have. It's a great game that deserves correct spelling lol.
I've never played the game but watch other play. Yet I still watch this video for the 3rd time. It's just so fascinating to watch the process of making the game. Especially the one scene with Joel and his daughter Ashely. It's amazing how every person, animators, artists, actors, musician all had a major part in making this one game.
Just finished the game yesterday, so this was perfect to watch now :P
***** ;)
Just thank you for everything you just put on the best journey I've ever had in 30 years as a gamer. Beyond words.
After beating this game 5x and Uncharted 4,I can't wait to experience the sequel.
+MRacer001 Yes it affects you on a deep level.
***** wtf is wrong with you. We are not talking about shitty anime
***** Entitled*
***** you have a point sorry bro :)
Not really there's ton of shitty triple A games being made just for money just like movies.
the music score is great on this game, so is the story and acting,JUST AMAZING
I met Troy, he's such a great guy! love his acting
Lucky he seem like such a cool guy to hang out with. So does Ashley Johnson to.
This documentary was actually very interesting. Since I'm going to college for Game Design, this was actually very informative and helpful
You guys who also love TLOU but haven't seen this yet are going to LOVE THIS! Enjoy
Wow, I really loved this. The game was fantastic, seeing the "behind the scenes" was great. You guys are so talented.
Yay. Sitting down to watch this for the fifth time!
+norm welthagen It's good to listen to when your doing work, or some repetitive task you can just zone out to.
Just finished the game for the first time(I know right late) and I have to say it is by far the single best piece of media I have ever consumed. Music to movies to games this is that best of anything I have ever seen it is through and through a absolute masterpiece it's sad that all games can't be this good
I don't get why Troy Baker isn't a big screen actor, he definitely has the talent. Maybe he's happy doing VO, which is nice for us gamers :)
The only thing I'd love more than this, as far as a documentary-esque thing from Naughty Dog would be to be able to see the entire mocap process. I want to see everything. It's always so amazing to watch the actors' raw performances.
Wow that was really good, I didn't want it to end.
Can't wait to see what ND can do with the PS4 hardware.
