Both Wayne Gretzky and Bobby Orr consider Gordie Howe to be the GOAT - the Greatest Of All Time, and if these guys think so then that's good enough for me.
40 goals @ 40 years old, get outta town. This man's legend gets bigger with every passing day. Mr.Hockey is probably the most appropriate nick name in the history of history. Right up there with Elbows. Larger then Life, like how Babe Ruth, Wilt Chamberlain & Muhammad Ali are remembered. Hero's come & go but Legends live forever. As great as he was on the ice, Howe was even greater to all his fans when they met him in person. It was never about Gordie, it was always about the ones who cheered him on. Class, Grit & Grace what more could you ask for outta a Man? Or a Hockey Player?
the Gordie Howe hat-trick- Goal, assist and a fight. -love the story that after seeing Gordie playing ambidextrous, and fighting, the owner of the Red Wings, who invested in sports venues and promoted boxing, offered him the opportunity to box, telling him he could be a world champion. Gordie said he had to ask his wife, and Colleen said no.
@@MikeHart72 yep. kept getting the goals and assists but they backed down a lot from the scraps... Rick Tocchet got 18, Brendan Shanahan 17... different days then...
A big reason that Gordie can never be duplicated is that physically, he was something of a freak. He had very short legs. Marty Howe tells a story about answering the phone one day, and it was a tailor from a store who wanted his Dad's measurements. Marty went and measured some of his Dad's pants as instructed by the tailor. The tailor couldn't believe it, and said he'd call back when Marty's Mom was home. He did. Mrs Howe dutifully measured the inseam of her husband's pants just as her son had done, and found it less than 28 inches even though Gordie was six feet tall. Just like her son had reported. That's the average inseam of a man four inches shorter than Gordie. Rest in Peace Mr. Hockey. Thanks for everything.
(Gordie Howe) was the only “ambidextrous” Elite Forward aswell!👍🏼That’s why in some old footage? you’ll see him playing left handed, and He kept his Blade as Flat as you can? to switch Hands on the Go, to score five hole!👌. That’s a Crazy Record and Thing to think about it? because you’ll never see another elite player, play ambidextrous in todays game. That’s another record to add to his Greatness of his name: “Mr Hockey”👌.
I saw him take batting practice before a Tigers game, as he and Al Kaline were good friends. He was stroking balls off the facing of the third deck like it was no big deal. In my book he is THE greatest to ever play the game.
I will also add that Gordie Howe was ambidextrous. He could shoot and pass equally well with either hand. Occasionally he would switch hands mid stride. That make it even more amazing, IMO
I'm a life long fan of Gordie Howe and I'd like to add some commentary. Most teams have an enforcer. Detroit didn't need one. They had Gordie. In era, Gordie was one of the physically biggest men in the league. There is a picture that pops up occasionally online showing Gordie after a game sitting fatigued in his shorts. He is as built as any body builder I have ever seen. The muscle just exude from his body. Gordie was ambidextrous, so you never knew when he was going to pull the trigger on his shot or pass. In the twilight of his career, I watched some young player drive Gordie into the boards. Gordie got up and continued to play. But the next shift when they were both on the ice, Gordie skated up behind him, stuck his stick between his legs, and dumped the young player into his own bench. One handed. Lastly, I attended a celebrity bowling tournament of Detroit sports stars in the early 1980's. Gordie was bowling at a 180+ clip for his games. His opponents were ragging him so he changed to bowling left handed and scored in the middle 200's. The man was just an athlete, maybe as good as there ever was in any sport.
Most of his career he played in seasons of less than 70 games. Imagine if he played 82 game seasons his entire career, no one would come close to his records. I took my son and nephew to meet him at an autograph session. He took so much time with them and was so gracious, he was the best.
Great video. Great narration too. I still think Gordie Howe is the greatest all-around hockey player ever. I think Bobby Orr is the most skilled and exciting ever.

It pains me to say it, but Ovechkin's record is about as close as it gets. Despite his scoring he has always been a legitimately physical player yet has only missed 35 games due to injury in 19 seasons. (granted only 4 fights to Gordy's 22)

Howe was the G.O.A.T. of hockey. Had he played as a 20-year-old when Gretzky started his career he would have outscored Gretzky. Ovechkin and Crosby would have been ordinary in comparison. It was a shame that the Wings and the NHL did not find a way for Gordie, Mark, and Marty to play in Detroit. They should not have had to play in Houston. Marty was a really good football player. If he had decided football was his sport he would have been a member of the Hall of Fame. I watched him play on the defensive line. He brutalized the offensive guard across from him. By the end of the first quarter, the guard stopped blocking him.
@HOCKEYFILES-sf8gv Howe scored the majority of his goals when there were eight teams before expansion. He played against the best, every night.
