  • My friend Chuck had a great idea to combine my old wheelchair with an old bike he had so that I could go on bike rides and feel the wind on my face again. We filmed the process of making it and the first test drive, I think it turned out pretty cool . Let me know what you think.

    Your great idea is the answer to my friend's prayers. Her brother Mike had a stroke and can't get out much--stuck in a VA hospital. His sister Trish is my best friend. She didn't think she could afford the fancy bike we saw in another video. You are a genius and one hell of a friend. Thank you so much for sharing your invention. It will mean a lot to so many people who can't afford thousands of dollars for what you created for almost nothing. Loved seeing the smiles on your faces.

    I just finish looking at a family on Facebook hoping one day to get one for thier son. But this bike cost to much for them they saw it go for $6000 dollars! I told them they can get it for less by looking for a builder. Your idea has been the best and cheapest way to go! Thank God I found your video! Bless you!

      One tip, be sure to cut and de-rake the headstock. Make the steering stem straight up and down, not slightly angled as it is on a bicycle. If you don't do that, cornering will be . . . . .awkward.

    Found this looking for ideas how to put pedals on a wheelchair so I can get my dad to exercise his legs again. After numerous events back to back, coma, collapsed lung, stroke, heart attack, crushed discs in his lower spine and damaged knees he is still fighting. He has mobility back in his upper body and has gotten to where he can slideboard into a wheelchair but he's seemed to hit a fairly large plateau.
    We're moving to the east coast, somewhere in NC, in a city where he can get physical therapy 3x a week without a 3 hour round trip commute. He had a therapist come to the home at first, but from what I gather they mainly just shot the shit for an hour or two and the guy left without ever actually doing anything. He made progress while he was at the hospital (spent over a year there) but that has come to a standstill at home. I'm hoping to change that, and I think that getting out and being able to explore the outdoors will be a huge motivation for him.
    Some of the first videos I'll post on this account after this move will be my attempts at creating a wheelchair trike. I'll eventually get him into a tadpole recumbent trike but for now I need something that is compact enough to use around the house as well as stores and such on outing trips. He has not even been anywhere but the hospital and home for 3 years now other than a few dinners out.
    While watching this it brought tears to my eyes while I can only imagine what it must feel like. And I'm certain a ride around the park would do something amazing for my dad. And that he would even enjoy himself going grocery shopping. If all goes according to plan we will be moving this monday. Sorry about the ramble. This has become a subject I am passionate about. I want to give my father a way to earn his life back
    When people come together wonderful things can happen. With belief and determination we can do anything.

    • @fouroneseven
      @fouroneseven  8 років тому

      +Big Dan Hey Dan, first off, I'm sorry to hear about your fathers situation. As far as physical therapy, have you heard of project walk? It's the reason I moved to FL and I believe it's the best, however not covered by insurance. I've had a lot of experience with home therapy and it's very difficult to adjust the mindset to what it would be in a gym.
      I commend you for your determination to help your father have a better quality of life. The tadpole recumbent trike is a fantastic idea!

    Great and low cost too. Take it you only had the back brake. How easy is it to turn please?

    • @fouroneseven
      @fouroneseven  8 років тому +1

      +Paul Roberts Yes, back brake only and it is quite difficult to turn. This is from the angle of the neck, different bikes and chairs will effect this a lot. We have an idea to attach a spring or bungee cord that will tighten when turning so that it always pulls back to straighten itself out. No accidents yet :)

    • @Guzzilunatic
      @Guzzilunatic 6 років тому

      De rake the neck to fix the steering problem. I posted a video on how to do it. It'll turn just fine once that is done.

  • @buckwheat7424
    @buckwheat7424 8 років тому +2

    bad ass, if you have a fixed crank, you'd have a reverse also. that might be tough for hills. You probably have a patent idea for some serious hardcore customers. Medical industry is hard hit and has been with atrocious cost, it's why a ]lot of things are in trouble these days. I can't tell from the vid if it's balanced and easy to turn sharp at near to a stand still speed. It can be done. Stick with the price range of cost, and build production models. Most people aren't in shape enough to ride around the block, seriously. 2 miles to them are far. I have a 1957 Gravely walk behind tractor. It's a large 5hp driven farm tool, that has attachments, I welded a trailer tongue to a rotary lawn mower and put a ball hitch on the tractor. I could stand on the rotary cover and push on the bars to pivot at a stand still. Because the handles on the tractor are long, there's a lot of leverage to lift the front end of the tractor up and pivot the trailer (the lawnmower, or your bike) on a dime. The Gravely Tractor company sells the attachment called "Sulky Chair," something like that, it has a steering wheel. It's just not clear what's going on dimensional with it until you do things like what you're doing, then it's like damn this thing works. If you can change right there where you are, you can change everything everywhere.

    • @fouroneseven
      @fouroneseven  8 років тому

      +Buck Wheat We've Have had so many discussions about this. We feel like it'd be best to develop a bracket that can attach any chair to any bike only requiring the removal of the front bike wheel. The "sulky chair" looks like something to incorporate for sure, even as a separate concept trailer for the back of a bike. Turning is the only real issue, but nothing too bad, somewhat wide turns, but because of the weight in the front when I'm in it, we just lift the bike and spin easily to turn around. We have an idea to attach a spring or bungee cord that will tighten when turning so that it always pulls back to straighten itself out, wants to turn at high speeds.

    • @buckwheat7424
      @buckwheat7424 8 років тому +2

      way cool! I have a Gravely Tractor in my backyard, bought it some years ago from the original owner's daughter at a garage sale, for $35.00. It didn't sell for the first three days, it was listed in the newspaper as a rototiller. I called and drove 15 miles, soon as I seen, I didn't know what it was, but I knew it was a tractor. It had a mulching attachment and a plow attachment. It's a 1957, with a lot of rust cleaning it works great. It came with the manual, an attach, you probably already know about it, is the "sulky" or sulky chair. I don't have that, but I had a trailer tongue, that I welded onto a rotary lawnmower and hitch it to the tractor. The seat was on the mower and to pivot you just push down on the tractor handles to lift the front wheels off the ground, pivoting the hitch, forward or backwards. Gravely was an inventor with the customer in mind #1. His first tractor products were produced to last a lifetime of service. Keep thinking, and market your design. The history of Go Pro is insanely successful. It started not long ago with a 35mm camera.

      +Kevin Snow The fat tires for the beach for sure. It'd be best to develop a bracket that can attach any chair to any bike only requiring the removal of the front bike wheel. We've played around with Ideas, but nothing workable yet. Turning is the only real issue, nothing too bad, just have to make somewhat wide turns, but because of the weight in the front when I'm in it, we just lift the bike and spin easily to turn around or similar. I was thinking to maybe attach the wheelchair to the back of the trike and just pull her along while she's still on the road or maybe put the wheelchair on some sort of platform with wheels - something you know? do you think one can be developed to just glide the chair on a sort of ramp attachable to the back of the trike, or ride on the street? What do you think. I'm her primary caregiver, and could use the outdoor exercise. can you develop something like what i described?

    This is awesome. I'm in the middle of making my own - how did you deal with the bike "tipping" outwards when cornering? Did you just deal with it as it was, or did you do something to counter it? I'm thinking about chopping up an old go-kart to get proper steering on the front and not using the headstock as the pivot point.
    Excellent vid :)

      Derake the bicycle head stock to be straight up and down. That will cure the tipping issue. Just cut the backbone ad notch the down tube, then crank the headstock forward till it is straight up and down, then weld it back together. The tipping is the result of the 15 degree headstock angle.
