We literally label ourselves the “queer” community. Queer means strange. LGBT acitvists constantly talk about how we live in a “heteronormative” society, so of course we’re not normal. However, the point I see Galloway making is that there’s a difference between saying “these people aren’t normal but we should afford them the same dignity and respect” and trying to pretend that we are normal to be inclusive at the cost of the truth.
That’s probably the most interesting and sympathetic interpretation of George’s words I’ve seen so far. Do you think he’s really making that much of a nuanced point? Genuinely interested
@dogmatictales did you listen to the interview? Because that's exactly the position that George expressed. Repeatedly. Unambiguously. It was very, very clear. Everything else is just typical leftist screeching over ideological purity tests.
In their full interview, Novara mention that Galloway voted for gay marriage, a Conservative policy, about 10 years after same sex civil partnerships had already established the same rights. I would have liked to have seen that discussed and unpacked and also his Stonewall award for promoting equality for gays and consistently voting for it.
Heteronormativity is seen as a bad thing in queer circles. Assuming straight people to be the norm is something that is pointed out in order to be criticised. And queer is a reclaimed slur it is not us calling ourselves abnormal
The majority of people aren't LGBT. Britain is way more homophobic and transphobic today than it has ever been with the rise of the far right that Galloway's words incite. That's why there should never be any referendums about the rights of minorities voted for by the majority, a majority that has no real understanding of it and are more likely to be bigoted about it.

The last thing I could care about regarding a politician is the aesthetic: how they appear honest or answer clearly. The leader of Germany in the 1930s was likewise honest and straightforward. It doesn't matter, the words are just an indication.
Using that logic, how do you find Israeli politicans' like Gallant and Ben Gvir's claims that Palestinians are "animals"? Are they also "refreshing... You have to respect that"?
A British MP who's doing great work exposing the barbarity of the Netanyahu regime and the corrupt state of British politics is trying to be undermined, it seems, just because of his opinions on sexuality and how he chooses to protect his own children in his own way, that his opinions on the matter differ from the presenter(s) opinions is neither here nor there. @@RadiantStar8997 actually, he didn't say that. He repeatedly said that being gay is "not normal". Aaron asked if he meant "not typical", and he said no, he meant "not normal".
According to Oxford dictionary, "normal" means "the usual, typical or expected state or condition"--so Galloway is correct when he says that homosexuality is not normal. Why is such a claim polemical?
It is for the simple reason that the antonym for usual is unusual, the antonym for typical is atypical while the antonym for normal is abnormal. You would have to be disingenuous if you claim that the latter word is not used consistently in a judgemental or derogatory sense. I am left handed. Nowhere have I ever seen myself described as abnormal or even not normal. Here's a question for you to ponder : Is it normal for about 10% of the population to be left handed? Now, by extension : Is it normal for between 5 and 10% of the population to be gay?
@@tonybennett4159 Unfortunately, the word abnormal has taken on negative connotations as you say--so, what if instead I use the term "not normal" which is what Galloway uses . As for your question--well that is just changing the subject. The fact that something happens less than 10% of the time makes it atypical and unusual by definition and your question just asks if it is normal for there to be exceptions to general rules. I don't see the relevance to the question at hand.
@@tonybennett4159You raised the same points I was going to , only worded it better. It's a question of statistical "norms". Homosexuality is perfectly normal.
I agree with you, George Galloway grew up and has lived most of his life in a different cultural reality, he isn't disrespectful, he is simply a very conservative person with a four square understanding of family structure, were he younger he would probably be more elastic and broad minded about family structures.
He was asked specifically if he meant normal as in typical and he explicitly said he didn’t mean it in that manner. I respect his honesty but not his bigotry and his express desire to translate said bigotry into policy
I don't always agree with George but he's one of the few, very few, that stand against the slaughter of Palestin!ans. Very disappointed with Novara Media .
The SNP (the third biggest represented party in Westminster) has stood consistently against this...but so much of the focus is on the 'big two'. The farce of their own motion being denied should surely not be forgotten.
“Respect and affection”. Until it comes time to set the school curriculum, where according to Galloway, kids must be taught to be nice to the gays, but that they’re abnormal and that trans people can’t use this or that bathroom. “I’ll pat you on the head and have you over for dinner, but I won’t give you rights”. Doesn’t seem very respectful to me. Of course he has a right to this view. And the rest of us have a right to say “that’s abhorrent”.
I don't need to agree with everything he says, and Galloway can be unbearably smug sometimes. But he has balls, he has integrity. He's not a genocide -accepting piece of shit. I'm not sold on the 'normal' argument either. Openly supporting the IDF is done by millions of people. It's not normal. (I wouldn't call homosexuality abnormal, but think your argument that it is not can be easily unpicked).
George Galloway is for equality for all people of all genders. He's not homophobic and there are many gay members in his party. He is a Roman Catholic and is entitled to his beliefs. Fir that he is being demonised
No one is claiming he isn't entitled to believe whatever religion he wishes to subscribe to. But he is not entitled to spread nonsense and fact free rubbish, especially when that can incite more hate and bigotry (whether he means to or not). And as for this "normal" and "don't want kids sexualised", well one, what's normal? (there's no such thing as normal) and two, no kids are being sexualised or taught anything controversial in schools, unless you think telling kids that LGBT+ people exist. And if you think he is being demonised, you've no idea what truly being demonised is
All Abrahamic religions not just the Catholics are uncomfortable around gays. I agree with you Galloway is not homophobic. There are more important issues to focus on.
He is homophobic, firstly because he claimed that gay relationships are not normal or equal and, secondly, because he equated education about trans and gay people with the sexualisation of children. This evokes on one level an old homophobic trope that gay people are all about sex, furthermore, there's a whiff of another homophobic trope, that of paedophilia. So, no, he is definitely not "for equality for all people of all genders". He said it himself.
@adammorgan1776 Everyone is entitled to their opinion bt galloway having his opinion makes him bigoted??? Really. These buzz words r losing their worth.

On the other hand, Galloway agreed to an interview, and is now in meltdown over the follow-up media scrutiny over his comments on homosexuality. If he can't deal with the push-back, then being a politician probably isn't the right vocation for him.
As Galloway has been consistent for many years now on the Palestine issue and Novara agree with him on that, it's pretty much telling us what we already know. More interesting is what Galloway thinks about OTHER issues. He shouldn't be standing as a single issue candidate.

@@EnglishAbundanceI think NM has failed when it decided not to present the level of understanding to what Mr. Galloway said on the interview, but instead concentrated on the linguistics. It decided to overemphasize the form not the content. He has stated on multiple occasions during the interview that he has personally shown only respect and affection to homosexuals and transsexuals. He supported their rights even at times when many did not. The man was even awarded for his contribution in elevating their rights. From what I understood from a related video on his channel, NM also did not respect their agreement on when to publish that interview.I wonder why they mentioned nothing about that. All of the above makes it reasonably clear to me, that NM decided to smear Mr. Galloway. It decided to do the same disrespectful act as the mainstream media is doing to eg Francesca Albanese when putting their own interpretations for that person's words with the aim of "hurting" their reputation. Based on the same interview I am convinced that George Galloway is not homophobic and I cannot see someone coming to that conclusion unless he is so biased and overly sensitive on the matter, or it is in ill faith.
@@helo6172 Galloway said one of the reasons he didn't want his children taught that "Adam and Steve" was normal, was because if the world were suddenly only populated by gays, our species would die out within two generations. This is homophobia by definition - an irrational fear that doesn't align with reality. 3% of the global population is gay and there is no evidence nor reason to suspect that will dramatically change. Why then ruminate on a wholly fantastical counterfactual whose only effect is prejudice? The rationalising over the very obviously loaded term "normal" here is also pretty hilarious. Even if he meant it as akin to statistical likelihood within populations, when talking about a group that has been treated as other, vilified, violently attacked, murdered, criminalised over history because of a departure from straight hegemony, calling that group "not normal" is woefully poor judgement at best. And it's contradictory to his other objection - "Adam and Steve" shouldn't be considered normal because it's a minority, but he's also scared that gays could become the dominant population, which would then be normal, but then we'd all die, so he doesn't want that either. It's all thoroughly bemusing. The mention of "Adam and Steve" is an obvious homophobic slur, despite his backpedaling attempt to say he meant there probably ARE couples whose names are Adam and Steve. Utterly risible and contemptuous. We all know the line 'God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve,' as a way of othering and delegitimising, implying there's something unnatural about homosexuality and therefore not to be accepted by broader society. But perhaps most hilarious of all is the straight people here sermonising on what homophobia is without ever having experienced it or ever having really thought about it. Or even having thought much at all. Lots of 'he's just being honest ', as if honesty is a get-out-of-jail-free-card for offensive remarks; lots of euphemisms like "socially conservative" and "strict religious" views, as they lend respectability to small-minded bigotry. And as for the video going out before the scheduled time, a teaser went out and the full video was released when it was supposed to be. This is pretty common, and this clip was chosen because it's the most divisive. Click bait is right, but he still said the things he said and could only have caused the furore it did because of the content he provided.

Personally I think Novara Media showed its hand. Throughout that segment of the interview George was clear he was honest and he was reasonable. He never for a second showed any hate or disdain toward the LGBTQ community and approached the issue from a position of respect and fairness. You don't have to agree with the agenda to not be opposed to it's existence. Whereas for an organisation that calls itself people powered there was definitely an agenda here. When you couple that with Novara breaking tthe promise that this interview would be posted on Sunday rather than Saturday to avoid impact on the elections it's damning. Aaron Bastani pressing George on the issue is all well and good. It's also ok to say that he does not agree with George and Novara distances itself from his view BUT launching this campaign against him to try and delegitimise him is PATHETIC. So much for being independent Novara.

I’m not too keen on how self congratulatory the interviewer is. These comments by Galloway and NM remain far from concrete about: A. What kids in school are actually being taught about sexuality. B. What are the moral consequences for the current curriculum C. Whether or not the sex education is even the biggest issue for kids these days. None of you sound informed or in a position to comment. NM guys aren’t speaking from experience of having children in the current school system and don’t have the worries parents have nowadays so they need to un-smug themselves in this area.
There is nothing wrong with Galloway’s statement. The normal sexual orientation for most all species is heterosexual and anything different from this is not normal. It absolutely doesn’t mean it’s wrong or something that should be discouraged, it’s just different. The statement, I also believe, was not implied in a derogatory fashion either.
Normal in the way Galloway uses it necessarily has a normative connotation to it, it is not just a description of what most people do or what orientation most people have. Since he is a Catholic, homosexuality for him is a sin and intrinsically immoral, so according to his worldview it would make sense why it is not 'normal' and why it should not be encouraged. Now what you said doesn't make sense. You can't have your cake and eat it too. If by 'not normal' you mean anything else other than not typical, then you are stigmatizing gay relationships. Period.
Bastani described straight parents as hetero-normative (the clue is in the definition) literally admitting they are normal, ergo anything to the contrary is not normal. lol 😂 fake outrage and a failed attempt at an hatchet job is all this is.

This interview actually showed NM's true colours. Galloway clearly stated that homosexual relationships are not normal i.e. that which is usual, typical or standard. This is obviously a fact attested to by almost any individual with eyes in their head. Bastani then spinned (or at least made an awful attempt to spin) his words into saying that not normal means an aberration or an abomination (i.e. he fixated on the negative connotations associated with not normal). This disgraceful conduct by Bastani and the subsequent inappropriate behaviour of the rest NM is particularly distasteful. The left is a spectrum. It should accommodate a range of different views and ideologies on shared concerns. Galloway is in fact an outstanding example of this. He disagrees with LGBT and Green views in a way that is neither dismissive nor calls for them to be cancelled. He disagrees respectfully and yet remains inclusive (despite the offence brigade trying to undermine this approach).
@Ahl-im7on: That summation isn’t quite accurate. If you listen to the interview carefully, you will realise that GG went a step further by describing same sex relationships as being ‘not equal’ to those of heterosexual couples. That’s an odd, and to some, offensive, claim.
@@MontyCantsin5 well, he ALSO explained WHY that is.... hetero relationships keep humanity to go on....due to...oh I don't know, that whole procreation stuff.... heterosexuality tend to produce babies to add more humans and prolong humanity as we know it. can homosexuality do the same? of course not. so...how are they EQUAL, exactly? but, ya see....this is the problem with this topic. no matter how someone like Galloway, who's openly and actively supportive to the alphabet group, and promotes respect and compassion for them....many in the group would just attack him blindly for having a different set of personal beliefs and values. they seem to have forgotten how it was for them to be forced into conformity, only a couple of decades ago...now y'all trying to force EVERYBODY to accept your way of life and even force it on everyone else's...even through their children. give it a break.

I agree. A very big disappointment from NM.
Why? Because they’re calling out homophobia?
I’ve never liked Aaron Bastani. Here I have confirmation.

@@firstnamelastname-bu1xm Should he be shamed for it. This is what Novara repeatedly do to people on the left.
It's clear the future path of Novara Media. I've been rather uncomfortable with NM lately.
I suspected the gutter journalism was lurking beneath the surface and this just confirmed it.
NM are going to lose followers real quick if they persist with this dirty gotcha type of journalism.

One man in parliament standing up for thousands of murdered children in Gaza and you choose to focus on whether he used the correct word to describe gay relationships. This behavior is not normal, but it is typical. Never thought Novara was just a typical media group, very disappointing.
Oh yes look at the lessons learnt from UKIP 😂
Vote on one issue and ignore the rest of his views 🙄
He is not the only person in parliament standing up for Gaza.
Both Novara presenters are bigging this up when it doesn't deserve it. It's just hairsplitting. It's true most of the world's population is hetro. So, yes ''hetro is typical and in layman's terms considered 'normal.'
@@RadiantStar8997 Well you are not normal using that definition of normal 😂

Answer this. Why did you release the clip on the eve of the local elections after you'd assured him you wouldn't??
A publicly elected politician shouldn't try and hide their political views. If you don't want your political views known, don't run for public political office.
Because in a free and fair election, the voters should be well-informed about the candidates?

@@londonoverground I have tried. But my comments keep being deleted. Many others in this commentary agree with my sentiment. Their comments remain...for the moment.
But let me try again.
The deepest complaint about politicians is dishonesty. And the devious doublespeak, decontextualisatoon, character assassination, nit picking focus and many other techniques used to facilitate that dishonesty.
Here is someone actually willing to go out on a limb and express his own real views on topics he is very very aware, that are controversial. Especially in modern political culture.
He has actually supported gay rights through his political power, his vote. Has received awards accordingly. He has behaved with affection and respect towards gay people and trans people.
Yet Novara chose to characterise him as a homophobe and a narrow minded, possibly confused or self destructive dinosaur.
Because he actually expressed his own view on how his children should be taught about sexual and relationship matters.
And apart from the tired attempts at conflating trans controversy with a gay context....Novara implies that he us a homophobe over the definition of the word "normal". Using the very political cowardice and dishonesty we all complain about.
They have very obviously attempted to decontextualise Galloways overall contention and acrual application by dishonest emphasis
@@reachforthesky1576 that's a long winded way to say you're a bigot. bigotry isn't normal so why don't you stop?

I'd rather have a straight Galloway response than a poll tested finger in the wind Starmer or Sunak response. At least we know where he stands and everyone can take what they want from it. Personally I don't have that an issue with what he said.
Dear Novaro team, as an outsider non-west, as much as i appreciate your meticulous approach to news topics you pick, i have to say, there is something called “Opinion” “facts” “history” etc. that you cannot agree with but true. Galloway is the only Man that many outsiders can related to. Yes, relate to, in terms of social ethics and integrity.
I would be amazed to see if any of you are believing in God or religion .
I'm now convinced that NM doesn't fight for the Working Class. (petty narcissism of weaponized identity politics - don't upset the rulers)
Well said, George!
George doesn't seem to respect women. He does not respect their opinion in sexual situations
Mind telling me if you're yourself LGBT or asked anyone how they felt at his comments? Or are you just telling the people angry at being attacked to "get over it" because it doesn't affect you?
PATHETIC
Re-read this comment you typed and tell me you don’t sound like a cult member.
I'm with George
Why does Novara Media have to be so disingenuous? So disappointed. This is what puts me off being a paid subscriber. George Galloway didn't say any thing wrong.

Extremely disappointed in you guys Novara Media, this was very disingenuous of you. George is entitled to his personal beliefs and it was very clear that there is no hateful intent and everyone is still to be treated with respect and affection despite his religious beliefs. Unlike many, many other politicians. I don't share the same religious beliefs as him but completely respect him for what he said. The clip you released was virtually clickbait on your behalf, the full interview gave much more context. There was no hate directed from him towards gay people or anyone else for that matter. Shame on you for making a 'thing' of this .

I agree George came out of the interview a lot better than Novera Media.Even now they are trying to twist his words and most of Georges opinions come from a religious standpoint but they don't want to highlight that point.
How did it backfire, they interview lots of people they disagree with. This is a well viewed 2 hr interview. As Aaron said he kearned allot from this interview.
I’m not too keen on how self congratulatory the interviewer is. These comments by Galloway and NM remain far from concrete about:
A. What kids in school are actually being taught about sexuality.
B. What are the moral consequences for the current curriculum
C. Whether or not the sex education is even the biggest issue for kids these days.
None of you sound informed or in a position to comment.
NM guys aren’t speaking from experience of having children in the current school system and don’t have the worries parents have nowadays so they need to un-smug themselves in this area.
There is a lot of projecting here
There is nothing wrong with Galloway’s statement.
I cant see what the problem is, He said what billions of people on this planet agree with, the sad part is, out of them billions only a very small number have the courage to say it out loud. You are the man Mr Galloway.
Vote freely, vote fairly, and vote justly.......so vote for the workers party of britain.....George Galloway freed us all from the shackles of the Labour Party....you fail to vote Labour once in your life and you never vote for this Labour Party again.

Doubling down? Okay. Don't ask about people's personal beliefs if you're going to get offended.
Someone tell Galloway “protecting children” and “Catholic school” does not belong in the same sentence.
it is not fair to invite George Galloway to an interview and then dissect the interview ex post in Galloway's absence... let the interview stand by itself... this is giving Bastani the opportunity to try Galloway in absentia

So with your 2 hours interviews with him it the gay part you decided to promote.? Just wow
Are we supposed to ignore it? Just wow.
@@BethellAthletico Don't like people's personal beliefs then don't ask about them.
Dead right. Spot on. Thank you.
Excellent comment 👌
Agreed.
@Ahl-im7on: That summation isn’t quite accurate. If you listen to the interview carefully, you will realise that GG went a step further by describing same sex relationships as being ‘not equal’ to those of heterosexual couples. That’s an odd, and to some, offensive, claim.
@@MontyCantsin5 well, he ALSO explained WHY that is.... hetero relationships keep humanity to go on....due to...oh I don't know, that whole procreation stuff....

so...how are they EQUAL, exactly?
but, ya see....this is the problem with this topic. no matter how someone like Galloway, who's openly and actively supportive to the alphabet group, and promotes respect and compassion for them....many in the group would just attack him blindly for having a different set of personal beliefs and values.
