Is Delila capable of nursing him? At 4 months of age, he must need mother’s milk to grow. I wish I knew more about them. I have watched several baby great apes having to be reared by surrogates but they were all matched by zoo staff to lactating mothers who had lost their babies. I am grateful that he has a surrogate within his own troop.
@@VA4LVRS Dalila was sent to Gaia Zoo because she refused to accept the new Silverback Jambo's leadership. @@HSR-bk5qb Queen Dalila is always so enigmatic👸🦍. Her eyes are full of stories, and she has a queenly, sharp gaze, but with a heart as warm as the sun♥️. She lovingly cares for the baby and steps up when needed. Let’s give her a thumbs up! 👍
@@AllThingsGorillaIt would be nice if the zoo could put out a blog post about the transition of the troop. People are really charmed by gorillas. It’s always good to have the facts of the story.
@@shawna6683 🤝🤝I also look forward to the zoo publishing a detailed blog, covering everything from Tamidol's passing to the plans for baby Makongo. I have many questions and would like to hear their explanations and solutions.
I'm so glad that Dalila was able to step up and give the baby all the love he needs. I'm new to this story so I don't know the details of why Dalila is caring for Makongo. But I'm really glad she is. I'm not sure if the baby is getting milk from her or is suckling for comfort. I'm guessing Dalila is higher ranked in the matrilineal order but it's hopefully a beautiful story that continues with lots of love. 💕
Queen Dalila is the baby’s surrogate mother. The baby’s biological mother passed away from illness on August 12th of this year, when the baby was just 4 months old. The zookeepers handle feeding the baby with a bottle, while Dalila is responsible for raising and protecting the baby to help him return to the family as soon as possible. Dalila is indeed the highest-ranking female in the troop. At 52 years old, she stepped up to save the family, even though she is at an age when she could have retired.

Is Delila capable of nursing him? At 4 months of age, he must need mother’s milk to grow. I wish I knew more about them. I have watched several baby great apes having to be reared by surrogates but they were all matched by zoo staff to lactating mothers who had lost their babies. Is Dalia part of the troop, what’s her backstory, soo happy for Makongo!!
@@VA4LVRS Dalila was sent to Gaia Zoo because she refused to accept the new Silverback Jambo's leadership. She caused a significant uproar about him replacing her beloved Silverback Bongo at Apenheul’s Primate Park. She was quite a feisty gorilla in her prime.
At Gaia Zoo, she eventually accepted the Silverback Makula and stayed there. Unfortunately, Makula passed away, and a new Silverback, Lomako-who is baby Makongo's father-arrived at Gaia Zoo in 2022 and took over the troop.
Well said neptunes3279❤️🤙🤙🤙❤️❤️
Is Dalila able to nurse Makongo?
I've seen baby Makongo searching for milk on Dalila many times, and I also noticed the zookeepers capturing it on their phones.📸
Y'all might think it's heartwarming but I feel the baby going to get hurt being dragged like that. I do think the Queen cares deeply for the baby. Although she looks quite up there in age herself. That growth on her chin is concerning.
Don't worry; Queen Dalila is amazing, and she will undoubtedly look after baby Makongo well. Dalila has two lumps on her neck, but they are nothing to be concerned about. She has had them for 10 years, and they haven't affected her health at all.
How does the foster mom feed the baby? Does her milk just naturally come in? Also it looks like she has a cyst or boil under her chin.
I wonder the same thing. Are they giving the baby a supplement bottle?
@@kriquetteshepherd1217 @pamcansler6960
The zookeepers feed the baby with a bottle daily on a set schedule. There’s no need to worry about Dalila-the two lumps on her neck have been there for 10 years and haven’t impacted her health.

First time here. It looks like Dalila is pretty old, probably a grandma. This is her last chance to be a mommy and she's grabbing it.
Is that a growth under her chin? She looks very tired so could she be unwell?
Queen Dalila is already 52 years old. The lump on her chin has been there for 10 years and hasn't affected her health. She is tired because of her age and the responsibility of caring for the baby, which makes her look exhausted.👸🦍♥️💪👏
Poor old girl, it looks like a grandma having to take on her grand baby . I bet that little guy really misses him mama😭he sure is cuddled up to her, but you can see it on his face he knows she isn't his mama😢 I'm glad he has a seraget to hold on too. I can clearly see she can't nurse him though 🥺
Queen Dalila is the ideal surrogate mother, holding a position of unquestioned authority within the troop and having vast experience in raising young ones. While she may appear a bit fatigued, she has taken on the responsibility of caring for the baby at a time when she should be enjoying retirement, ultimately saving the family. She has even adjusted her routine to accommodate the baby’s needs. Both Dalila and the baby are working together, making efforts for the baby’s smooth reintegration into family life.

Doesn’t always work this way. I saw where the female almost killed the baby. And, she had been a very good mother to her own babies. So, you never know.
@@RichardPennetti I don't understand your meaning. Are you referring to which female gorilla almost killed the baby?
Idk it does not appear to me that she is doing well with him. She’s dragging him along. Is she producing milk? Not blaming Dalila, she seems too old . She is not Freddy.
Queen Dalila doesn’t produce milk, so the baby is being bottle-fed by the zookeeper. Dalila can no longer fully support the baby’s weight; she is indeed physically not as strong as Freddy.
I wonder how the baby eats. She doesn't have Milk.
The zookeepers are responsible for bottle-feeding the baby, not Dalila.♥️🦍
I was wondering the same thing
I also think this female is too old for this
@@RichardPennetti Queen Dalila is 52 years old and should be enjoying her later years, along with Freddy and Toto. These selfless females have stepped up for the troop, especially since the other female gorillas have shown no interest in the baby. As a result, the responsibility of raising the baby has fallen to Queen Dalila, which is a considerable challenge for her.
Many people doubt the intelligence of gorillas, but I advise them to watch how gorillas in the zoo in the Japanese city of Kyoto manage a computer and numbers - no human can think as quickly as they do. And to those people who talk about the "law of the jungle" in animals, I will show videos of foster mothers-gorillas, with Delilah, and with Freddy from Cleveland.
I completely agree with you 🤝🤝🤝. Gorillas often display qualities that surpass humans in certain ways. For example, Dalila, Freddy, Toto, and Nemsi are all wonderful surrogate mothers.
