- Live at Juan Les Pins, Antibes, France, July 23, 1967. Dave Brubeck, piano, Paul Desmond, alto saxophone, Joe Morello, drums, and Eugene Wright, bass. Part of a television broadcast from the jazz festival. The CD of the concert is available as "Dave Brubeck Quartet - Live at Juan Les Pins 1967 ".
I studied with Joe Morello. I also was blessed to interview Dave Brubeck for my radio show. He told me that often Paul Desmond's solos contained special "inside jokes" and musical quotes" to make the band chuckle. Sometimes Paul played fragments of tunes that reflected events of the day That the band experienced before the concert! Paul Desmond was an extremely articulate and intelligent man, and it showed in his playing. Then of course there was his matchless tone. Gene Wright played perfectly in the quartet. What a wonderful musician he is.
You lucky lucky person. What a wonderful write up you have done! Congratulations and that you for sharing your experience and opinions!
@@nancymccracken3663 Thank you, Nancy. God bless.
A great jazz number makes you feel real good jazz does not get any better than this Chris taylor
One of the most perfect musical groups of all time.
Dave Brubeck was a genius! He influenced progressive music clearly. The synergy between the musicians is absolute, a delight for the ears and the eyes.
Once again the greatest Jazz quartet ever formed. They could read each others thoughts about tempo, key, when to compliment each other, contrapuntal playing etc. Dig it and all the other great tunes they played over the years.
Deze samenwerking van muzikanten heeft mij zo geraakt ,blijf mooie momenten ontdekken.Geniaal.
Desmond is the best sax player ever
Ik ga helemaal mee .
Excellent music just pure soul, love this style of jazz
This is the closest you’re going to come to hearing Bach reincarnated as a jazz musician-Paul Desmond. Magnificent jazz group, lucky to be alive when they played.
Great Paul's solo
Maybe they looked like accountants, but they were musical gods ahead of their time.
Well said! That's good!
Dave Brubeck Quartet! The Greatest!!
Whenever something musically interesting is about to happen, Joe pushes up his glasses.
Dave's solo showed he was already thinking about time and tempo changes where he was playing in one tempo and the others playing in a different tempo. He of course later developed this into the first 1 million jazz recording seller " TAKE FIVE". How awesome that is. RIP Dave, Paul, Joe, and Eugene.
Eugene Wright is the only surviving member of the "classic" quartet and is 94. Paul Desmond actually wrote Take Five in 1959.
Thanks Jan I appreciate your help.
Right on, Larry! Dave Brubeck and his great quartet continue to touch the hearts of millions. Thought you might want to know this--once Paul Desmond got diagnosed with terminal cancer, he sat down with his attorney and had his will drawn up so that all the royalties from TAKE FIVE would go to the American Red Cross. Since Paul Desmond died in 1977, over seven million US dollars from TAKE FIVE have helped people in need. Every time we hear TAKE FIVE anywhere, somebody is getting some kind of medical help. Paul Desmond was triple-hip. They all were, and are, of course. The story of Dave Brubeck bringing Paul Desmond into the band, in the first place, is one for the ages, too.
Never the same sound from an upbeat song all the way at the other end of the spectrum comes this relaxing masterpiece..
Comme les Beatles, la capricieuse illusion d'une parfaite harmonie...
Paul Desmond's solo sounds a bit like a Bach invention to me. Don't you?

Wonderful!
Ten out of ten
Masters of the cultural war.
Wonderful! Where did you find this?
Possibly one of the best recorded visuals of the greatest of his quartets.
It is also possibly the only time Brandenburg Gate was recorded (on film, I assume) by the quartet live.
Do you have more? Great job Jan.

Paul Desmond was a genius, Dave Brubeck was not
What?????
That’s the first time I’ve ever seen a drummer fix his high hat while playing.
So, I play a decent harmonica. I hack at guitar and piano. I was 1st chair saxophone in jr/high-school. I traded my old sax for an electric guitar my senior year. I shouldn't have.
I saw an old saxophone today at the pawn shop. After seeing several random saxophone videos in my feed oddly. I really want to buy it but I don't know if I should. Its been 35 years since I played. Anyone have an opinion?😢
Sounds like you came back home to your true love. You still got it, I'll bet.
Is this Jazz? Real Jazz? Yes, it is! 😮
