I'm going to take a slightly different stab at why having the 90mm vs the 85mm is a good choice: versatility. The 90mm macro simply can do more than the 85's: it has closer focusing, extra sharpness, it's stabilized, and it's weight sits right between the f/1.8 and f/1.4 85mm's. Sharpness is not the end-all/be-all of a great lens, but I'd rather have more and process it out, than have less. I'd also rather be able to compose and focus closer, then have to crop. . . . time and time again, when shooting portraits with the 85mm f/1.4, I always find myself wanting to get "just a little closer" to the subject - but not being able to. And for those random times when I'm not shooting a model, but instead walking about in nature, then I can have some fun shooting flora - both normally, or REALLY up-close. I rarely find myself needing to spend "that" much extra time retouching less than favorable skin after using the 90mm, so I find that point moot (for my own work.) So, def understand your reasoning - and that's cool. But at the end of the day, I'd rather have "more" than less . . . and the 90mm - in my book - trumps the 85mm based on sheer versatility, outside of it's small list of potential downsides.

Okay, I was one of those asking about Excalibur. And I really like the 90 f2.8 macro both as a macro and for portraits. You make a strong explanation why It didn’t make the top 5, and you’re right. I will say I would NOT suggest anyone buy the 85 1.8 if you already own the 90mm. They are just way too close together to justify that second purchase. Good video Miguel.

In fact, the 90s macro from Sony was my first fixed focal length - and is still one of my most used lenses today, alongside the 135 GM, 85 GM, 35 GM and 24 GM. All great lenses! 🙏🏻 Now I'm waiting for the 50 GM ...

I think, skin issues can be fixed post. I have a6400, no ibis. So for $999, I'm getting a telephoto prime (around 130mm or so full frame equivalent) + a macro lens ( both with stabilization). So I'm really considering buying it over the 70 to 200 f4. What do you think ?

I have been hunting UA-cam for this answer, I have the 85mm 1.8 and love it, that is the sharpest lens I own or used, but I was thinking of selling it to get this 90mm 2.8 lens, as I saw it as a more versatile lens to do those closeup macro shots as well as the portraits, like Mathew Bushey previous comment says

    • @Rustomhavewalla

90mm would be a better choice.
The best focal length for portraiture is 85mm. Even for shooting any picture, if you set your lens somewhere at 85 or 90 mm and then do your composition by moving forward or backward, you will get a better picture at that focal length than any other setting.
I just don't understand why photographers punish themselves by carrying such a heavy lens like 70-200 f4. To me it's an average lens.

LOL - full video to explain why a lens (which I own and love btw) did not make your very personal top-five - people do have the strangest issues with other people's (i.e. your) opinion. So, only about 2371 other lenses to go from here (including vintage manual lenses) - perhaps open a separate channel, e.g. to explain why the Asahi 135mm f/2.5 did not make it either :o). But well done, nice video as always - keep it rolling!

I have the 90mm and the 85mm 1.8, they're both amazing for portraits. But I'm thinking of trading in the 85mm for the 135mm. Which pairing do you think is better: 90/85mm or 90/135mm? I'd prefer to keep the 90mm because I use it for product photography as well.

That's a tough one to answer. They are all so good at different things. I'd probably let the 85 1.8 go in that situation. You could always dial down the clarity on the 90G if needed.

I got called out by a portrait photographer as 'stupid' when I said I preferred the less sharp 85mm 1.4 over the crazy sharp 90mm. When I purchased the 90mm I used it on 3 portrait shoots. On my shoots I have my 27" iMac hooked up so we can all see the photos. ALL 3 shoots, the clients did not like the 90mm photos. I switched to the 85mm and instantly they all said 'much better, love them now'. Even on near perfect skin, the 90mm can pull out and showcase the slightest inperfections. I very rarely use it for the exact reasons you said and I knew it wouldn't make your list for that reason. It is the most unforgiving Sony lens I've ever used but damn, so sharp!

I need help with portrait family photo shoots. I have the sony cx6700 camera and bought the sony FE 90mm Macro lens open box for 500 dollars since the lens that came with camera just never took any good pics and my phone actually took better pictures. The 90mm FE lens is amazing when it comes to quality and macro images but as i'm just starting out, i am having a hard time taking portraits and family pictures as i cannot get far enough away from the person/persons to take a good picture. Seems all the people are way to close on shot even at 10 feet. Any suggestions?

    • @MiguelQuilesJr
      @MiguelQuilesJr  3 місяці тому +1

Congrats on the deal you got for that lens! Given that you have an a6700, you're not actually seeing a 90mm focal length. Since the a6700 has a 1.5x crop, the 90mm acts more like a 135mm which is pretty tight for family photos. If you can't get back far enough it's going to be a tough lens for that application.

The way I see it, by being the sharpest and having macro capabilities, the 90mm is the complete opposite of a specialty lens: it's the most versatile. Sharpness and close focus are what limits most lenses: you can pretty easily soften a sharp lens (diffusion filter would be my move, though you can also do it on post-processing) but the inverse isn't really possible. The only real point against the 90mm would be a small loss of aperture, and that's a tiny price to pay for what you get IMO.

Not an excuse to not be on your top 5. For portraits:
    A. Turn in-camera sharpness to total negative, and or
    B. Tone down Texture and or Clarity in Photoshop (at least).
It's easier and better to apply softness in post to a sharp image than to apply sharpness to a soft image. The Sony 90mm G Macro is a keeper, no questions asked.
