Have you heard of the book The Pilgrim Project? Basically, it’s a 1964 book where America, desperate to beat the USSR to the moon, uses 2 modified Saturn 1Bs to launch first a small hab module, and then a Mercury capsule to the lunar surface, intending to pick the astronaut up in a year or so with Apollo. Launch him supply ships in the mean time. Was made into the film Countdown in 1967, which drops the realism a bit due to stock footage limitations, and uses a Gemini. Either way, I thought it would be an excellent backup plan, especially given your experience with space stations, and your proven ability to send Gemini to Lunar orbit.
@@N9GamingOfficial Oh definitely. The size of the shelter in the book (just large enough in diameter to stand in, just long enough for a bunk) I think it would be suicidal. But I’m sure you can launch bigger, given you aren’t limited to a Saturn 1B. And you put SRBs on your equivalent now. The book has the shelter originally designed as a survival shelter in case Apollo got stuck on the moon (a very real idea, though not this particular design). You could also use it as a starting point of a moon base. Book, if I’m honest, was a little dull, but it’s saying something when it’s a 1964 book about a moon mission and I could only find one factual error (I don’t think they had any plausible way to power the habitat). Everything else, including how you cobble together a moon lander in a few months, actually seemed plausible.
The other interesting quirk, is that both Russia and America decide to home in on a Surveyor probe to land. Which means they both aim to land in the same location at the same time.
I just wanted to say that I'm so glad the algorithm recommended this series to me last week and I binged it all.
