one of the biggest issues i have with tng is its sort sort of a sitcom but instead of being a sitcom its a drama where most issues get resloved by the end of the episode. and nothing rarely changes for the main characters.
Errr... last episode a main character left. A few episodes before that another character's wife got murdered, left him with a son who he became a deadbeat dad to, and then he went and killed one of the leaders of a powerful alien race which ultimately plunges them into a civil war, the outcome of which will determine the political and military makeup of the galaxy. That said... they never talk about any of that stuff again.
For a moment I thought the writers might actually remove Troi's empathic abilities permanently just because they were sick of always failing to make them useful or relevant. 🤣
Another “Cut to Troi crying, or freaking out” episode. To be fair. At the very least the writers tried to find some of her character in the writers room. It shows.. . That’s literally the least I can say
The plot of the episode could have probably been more interesting if it had centered around Geordi. Because Deanna Troi has an ability the others don't possess, her losing that ability simply brings her to the same level as everyone else on the ship. If Geordi lost his ability to use his VISOR, it would have made for an interesting story about disability in Starfleet, how others treat him, and how he would have adapted to having to go back to before he had his VISOR to rely on.
All of your ideas are great The problem is Gene Roddenberry had a mandate that said If the main character's fight it must be resolved within the same episode. It cannot carry over.
This was the episode where I came to the realization that I hate Counselor Troi and find her completely useless. I hate her as much as most Trekkies hate Wesley Crusher. I give the episode an F.
Troi sucks as a counselor because 1. She uses her powers to force people to tlak to her and 2. The fact that she does not want to get counseling for herself is a red flag and i took it as though she feels "above" other people becaus eod her powers or whatever. "Heal thyself" y'know
Honestly I find a lot of character episodes kind of blow but I think its more because the characters themselves dont easily translate well to carrying an episode. Its sadly mostly the way they are written.
I always assumed they figure there shit out by the end of the episode because the TV channels back then could show them out of order, and dumbass TV watchers, like me, would have trouble understanding what was going on. Plus isnt that a star trek thing in general, either they hammer the moral home, like having your brains beaten out with a slice of lemon, or its so subtle you're left feeling It's something... elsewhere. Elusive.
So who are the two dimensional things? Why did they want to go into what's dangerous for the crew? Why did they bug out Troi's brainwaves? That's why TNG sucks more than often. The writers do the 45 minute scifi mystery with the five minute "just end it any ole way." (Gates Mcfadden sucks also)
"Troi loses her empathic abilities, and nothing of value was lost. The end."
Oh no! Troi went from being unsure of people's emotions to being unsure of people's emotions! What a horrible loss for herself and her crewmates.
The "script not having depth" joke at the end made me laugh way harder than it should have.

Syndication. All the networks aired the episodes out of order, so nothing could really change so as not to confuse the audience.

That's TV before 2000. That said story arcs are overrated.
Ummm, Picard and the borg? That wasn't resolved on one episode.
Cosmic Strings are a real theory in astrophysics.
The Orville has a pretty fun take on the '2D species' thing
Explain
They discover an anomaly that brings them into a two-dimensional universe and it's depicted looking like a giant circuit board.
Guinan is a much better counselor than Troi any day.
For a moment I thought the writers might actually remove Troi's empathic abilities permanently just because they were sick of always failing to make them useful or relevant. 🤣

To be fair. At the very least the writers tried to find some of her character in the writers room. It shows.. . That’s literally the least I can say
This is where Troi became my least favorite character, she is so whiny and emo here, it makes me want to see Guinan replace her.
I genuinely don't understand why her personality changes?
I felt bad for Sirtis. She was let down so many times by the character writing. She wasn’t a bad actress at all when she got a decent episode…
"The Loss" Yep, you'll lose 45 minutes watching this episode.
Another excellent review gentlemen thanks for this!
Troi is supposed to be a trained psychologist, but when she loses her empathetic powers, she can't do anything and is completely useless.
So if a psychologist loses sight or hearing, they are supposed to not react like a human? Your logic isn't logical ingredient at all.

This whole episode felt like it was written in the 3 days before you go on a 4 day Holiday on Thanksgiving
1:03 it’s not like they have an electronic device on their chests that could at least be as effective as a FitBit or Apple Watch 😂
casting; can you say big words & are not to bright? yes
writing; can you write big words & are not to bright? yes
This is the kind of epsiode that people forget about when people gush about TNG.
the Orville did the 2 dimensional beings idea much better
All of your ideas are great The problem is Gene Roddenberry had a mandate that said If the main character's fight it must be resolved within the same episode. It cannot carry over.
Troi was always non-empathic. 🤣
This was the episode where I came to the realization that I hate Counselor Troi and find her completely useless. I hate her as much as most Trekkies hate Wesley Crusher. I give the episode an F.
Dianna losing her powers would have absolutely no effect on the plot of any other episode.
I don't like that widow, I feel sorry for her husband tbh.
He probably faked his own death to get away from her. She's in denial about that.
Normally I could sit through a second viewing of an episode of the next generation. Not this one. Her constant whining was too much to handle.

Great timing. I'm watching Star Trek universe chronologically (their time) and just finished this episode. Good job.
I give it a "D" for "Dianna".
Worf and his kid, and Crusher centric episodes usually blow as well.
Honestly I find a lot of character episodes kind of blow but I think its more because the characters themselves dont easily translate well to carrying an episode. Its sadly mostly the way they are written.
Can’t wait for “Fistful of Datas”
Fart in the Wind was the dropped title
Only thing I liked about this episode was when Troi called out Picard for the "other heightened senses" BS.
Unlike other Picard palm memes, the Picard Double Head Palm did not become popular.
I had a D lightfull summer. I am D lighted Troi kept her clothes on like Data did with Fajio.
Troi acted like a brat in this episode.
Nice work
Troy was the most dispensable character. She's only there because of some offshoot of the bald woman on The Motion Picture.

God I hate troi 😆 I wish she never got her useless power back
I always assumed they figure there shit out by the end of the episode because the TV channels back then could show them out of order, and dumbass TV watchers, like me, would have trouble understanding what was going on. Those things may be true, but they don't merit a free pass, especially with how well they've handled things like the Klingons/Worf.
So who are the two dimensional things? Why did they want to go into what's dangerous for the crew? Why did they bug out Troi's brainwaves? That's why TNG sucks more than often. The writers do the 45 minute scifi mystery with the five minute "just end it any ole way."
(Gates Mcfadden sucks also)
Deanna and how bad writing wastes a good character who could have done lots with those powers. Even her gets counseled by Guinan lol
I love Troi but I’m not sure how much of it is because she’s hot
This one is clearly an F for me and by far the worst Troi centric episode. She was simply insufferable.
Episode was stupid but the beginning with the widow was great. A+ opening and F- story. Averages to a D-
That was a bad episode. Bad writing and bad plot, it deserves a D.
The concept reminds me of the book from the 1600s titled Flatland
The book is free to read since it’s Public domain and not a horrible book
This episode was so 2 dimensional.
🎉
If you don't know the difference between 2D and 3D, you should go back to elementary school or watch "The Outer Limits."
♥
Omg! These guys are so vicious with their shade, I’d be shocked if at least one of them weren’t gay. Disappointed, actually 💁🏻🤣
I would agree with the D-. I really did not like this episode.
