Wow! This is the coolest video I have ever seen. I am very interested in the engine room tech and when I watch this I feel like I am really there! Thank you so much for sharing this.
Jeff, great videos. I'm a retired US navy nuclear operator and this kind of stuff simply gets my interest. Keep posting and fair winds and following seas to you
First year marine engineering student here, your videos are awesome man! my life as student is difficult but watching your videos cheer me up, im like "man, one of these days i'll be like him" Great visual work, and awesome channel mate! Keep up the good work
good tour of the engine room, the most modern engines in the current vessels, for the cadets of machines is very good this video because it allows us to know the spaces to which we must work, the tools to use and everything that make up the engine room
although I'm not a fan of 360...this was a well put together video. and thank you for sharing. I'm a 20w+ yrs automotive tech. so I really found this video interesting. how loud is it standing next to the crank case, and cylinders heads?
Very nice video, once again. Was just kind of staggering getting a feel of how big those engines really are, this 360 shows the immense scale very well.
This is an incredibly cool look around the engine room. I think I'd definitely get lost, since I couldn't always figure out fore and aft. My father was an oiler on a T2 tanker at the end of WWII - I think that entire engine room would fit just in the footprint of this crankcase! Keep 'em coming!
All that machinery and only a handful of people to operate and maintain it. Having been in the Navy (albeit not a snipe) it is amazing that so much is done by so few.
Lots of cool stuff, i hope technology takes engines to a level where they dont create vibrations throughout the entire vessel some day.. i find it hard to sleep sometimes.. Gotta love that big engine rooms have a bathroom, mindblowing :)
Wow , gigant engine room!! im from Argentina and i want to be a merchant mariner , i Hope travel around the world like you .. i see al your videos and are amazing !!!!
First 360 ` tour of an engine room I have seen. Labels appreciated, although my computer does weird things with the 360 `, sometimes making them hard to see.
Hey Jeff, I don't know where in the world you are now or when you will read this but I thought I'd quickly tell you that I enjoy your videos. Being as isolated as you are at sea, I think its remarkable that you are able to post this many quality videos. You have a great story to tell and I like your video style. Keep up the great work and keep posting as much as you can. Can you shoot more videos on your short stays in ports and what you do when you're there?
Jeff maybe you can explain to me why on every naval vessel (including submarines) the engine power setting is always "a suggestion" and the engine room has to acknowledge the requested power setting. Even the Star Trek's Zulu had direct control of the Warp drive (with the occasional whining from Chief Engineer Scott)!
Hello, if possible could you make a video showing an Engineer's typical day or something like that? Going to an Academy myself and I have to decide which route I'd like to take. If I could get your perspective, I'd figure I would have a better idea of what I want to do
A typical day for an engineer is to perform planned maintenance. The duty engineer will also do rounds in the engine room to inspect the different machinery and attend alarms. Cleaning is most likely also included in a typical day for all engineers. But then again no day is the same. There is always something that needs to be taken care of. This is my experience at Maersk Line. Hope this gave you a better idea of the work engineers carry out. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
Hey Jeff! Any chance you'll be doing an About Me video or segment anytime soon? Would love to know your story - how you ended up on the ship, how you have experience making videos, whether this is a career-long venture, or only temporary, etc. Thanks!
Hey man! I just stumbled upon your videos and I gotta say they're amazing! Great production quality and interesting updates. Keep up the great work! :)
A little slower would be helpful so that we could really scan the area closely, as we viewers may never see what you see everyday. These are wonderful blogs and are genuinely appreciated. (subscribed)
The Best engine room video I ever watched. Just a question. After the shaft generator is the gear box and then the propeller ? If yes, maybe you could show them sometime. Keep the good work !
I doubt you have a gearbox on the shaft from the main engine. Since this is a low-speed diesel engine, they are generally directly connected to the propeller but can have attachments like shaft motors and/or shaft generators.
Cool view of the engine room! I still remember how hot the fuel purifier room was!! I know you’re a mate, so I would recommend you get an engineer to proof your spelling. 😉 Ram
Hay Jeff, does your Chief Engineer hang around on the Bridge drinking coffee and BSing? I ask, because that seems to be their favorite pass time on most of the ships I've been on
+Christian Bischof i was there just two months ago! my last ship route went there regularly. Signed off already though... so next time! thanks for the offer, happy to sit down and have a coffee chat with my viewers ☺️☺️
Couldn’t help but notice that you don’t wear PPE e.g. helmet , gloves in most of your videos when on deck/ ER. Is the safety standard so lax on cargo ships?
I've heard you can access the crankcase while the engine is running, and even, somehow, work on individual pistons and cylinders, change big end or small end bearindgs, replace liners and pistons without stopping the engine. Is this true?
+Stuart Crouton I dont think so, i always help the engineer call up port authority on radio to notify then that we are immobilised doing engine work (replace liners and pistons) maybe different ships or more advance ones.., some ships do have two engines
hi Jeff, love your vid. i am currently working on a tug boat in hk, interested in seagoing live. Can you make a vid shows how a sextant work and what brand are recommended, many thanks.
i like the way you do your videos, also next time your down in the engine room can you show the data tag on the generator? just curious on who made it and the power output. also i would not mind seeing something on the refer units.
Hi! This is really awesome! I just have a question, is it impossible to get a work on a ship with a very Small/mild colour deficensy? This is a very small deficensy so it doesen't affect me anything in my life, im out with my boat very often and i do have a Boating Education/license so this deficensy doesen't really stop me to do anything plus my Eye sight and everything else with my eyes is perfect, but do you know if it's impossible to get a job with this mild deficensy?
hey jeff, im thinking about training as a deck officer. my one question is what are the work rotations like. do you usually work like 3 months on 2 months off. or how does it work.? i would ideally like 2 months at sea/ or working and 2 months off. I understand its variable but how does it all work. Also love your videos. The best source of information out there if im honest.
hey JeffHK when you are back at sea in the Mediterranean sea can you do more of that super time-lapse video like the one you did on the Suez canal and the stary night. thanks you and I'm hope you will be very successful in life. I'm also a big fan of your vlog. much love from the USA.
Can you please guide me through the procedure for a mechanical engineer to get the necessary documents and lisence from AMSA? I'm currently pursuing my BE mechanical engineering in India. Wow.. Just amazing... But I can't charted it on my mind because you moved to quickly from a place to another!! Please... do not speed up so much when you are walking to change the place of camera. BTW great idea loved your vid!! Thanks for keep making!!
It's thanksgiving here in the U.S...I just found your time lapse video last night after I dropped my bf off at work. I'm binge hard on all your videos. I love your videos. keep up the good work!!!

Glad you guys enjoyed it! Made specifically for enthusiast like you and engine cadets aspiring to join ships :D
JeffHK witch vessel you are sailing on?
i hope next vlog sir radar or ecdis familiarization for aspiring deck cadets thank you.
+John Johan oocl atlanta
Wow. This has got to be the best 360 degree video I've seen.
+VagueDirector _ thanks!
You are doing an excellent job with these productions. I'm a former submariner, 1962 -1970.
+Robert Taylor huge respect for you sir! those things were cramped!
Jeff, great videos. I'm a retired US navy nuclear operator and this kind of stuff simply gets my interest. Keep posting and fair winds and following seas to you
Thank you sir!

good tour of the engine room, the most modern engines in the current vessels, for the cadets of machines is very good this video because it allows us to know the spaces to which we must work, the tools to use and everything that make up the engine room
This is the best vdeo for me as im a student in marine university in Malaysia. This really helps me a lot ! Will going onboard a ship in 3yrs 😆
Now THAT is a proper engine room! So much machinery!
Take that Science Fiction!
Whole new meaning to engine "room" when its spread over five decks, holy cow. Beautiful, ha ha, great video!!
Very well done. 10 min video took me 40 mins to get through and then went back for more. Superb .... :-)
although I'm not a fan of 360...this was a well put together video. and thank you for sharing. I'm a 20w+ yrs automotive tech. so I really found this video interesting. how loud is it standing next to the crank case, and cylinders heads?

You Sir, deserve a medal! One of the coolest video's on youtube! Thank you very much for sharing, it is greatly appreciated.
+SOT03Y thanks for the support!
I have no idea what you're talking about nor do I care but great video. By far the best 360 video I've seen. Crazy how big that damn ship is.
All your videos are pieces of art. Beautiful to watch and educational simultaneously. Keep it up Lad!
This is a fantastic video. I’m going to watch it again.
More power to you. Thanks for making such quality videos!
Fascinating. You guys certainly run a clean ship. Thanks for sharing.
All that machinery and only a handful of people to operate and maintain it. Having been in the Navy (albeit not a snipe) it is amazing that so much is done by so few.
+Inspadave navy ships on the other hand amazes me to provide for so many people!
Lots of cool stuff, i hope technology takes engines to a level where they dont create vibrations throughout the entire vessel some day.. i find it hard to sleep sometimes..
Gotta love that big engine rooms have a bathroom, mindblowing :)
+Denstoradiskmaskinen nuclear power perhaps
Great video Jeff, good to see a navigator taking interest in what goes on down below :)
Thank you! Its like a ship familiarization but only on my bed and mobile phone at 12:23am 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Congratulation for your very interesting and comprehensive video ! Please keep on uploading such interesting material !
Dude. Best 360 video ever.
Great as usual Jeff
This was FANTASTIC! Thank you so much!
Wow! That is incredible. It is mind boggling how that is designed and installed.
+Jo Ro yea! the placement of machines are often between many floors in mind to squeeze in all of them
Wow , gigant engine room!! im from Argentina and i want to be a merchant mariner , i Hope travel around the world like you .. i see al your videos and are amazing !!!!
+gabriel romero good luck!
i am become ur fan brother...superb...keep it up...it is so helpfull for us....👍👍👍
Very cool and nice video ! Keep going Jeff :P
+Mattéo Iachkine aye aye!
Those central coolers are a huge ass to get to the main deck without a elevator. Had to gas cut though 3 decks and use a deck crane to get them up
Does this ship use high temp and low temp coolers or just one loop and call it done
Thank you Jeff. You make great videos :)
+Scott Cole thanks Scott :)
Well done, Jeff.
Yours vídeos are awesome bro... Never stop
thank you for this visual treat....
First 360 ` tour of an engine room I have seen. Labels appreciated, although my computer does weird things with the 360 `, sometimes making them hard to see.
Thank you Jeff. Really nice and informative video. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Ajay
Thanks for the video......................................... & THUMBS UP :D
Do you have dedicated wiper personnel on your ship? Everything is spotless. Thanks

So. Much. Complexity.

+Mohammad Mukhtar great suggestion, will do one next month
Found this really interesting as my man is a 4th engineer for maersk 😍 so nice to see something like this properly
This video is amazing, thank you, keep doing it!
Hey man! I just stumbled upon your videos and I gotta say they're amazing!
Great production quality and interesting updates.
Keep up the great work! :)

The Best engine room video I ever watched.
Just a question. After the shaft generator is the gear box and then the propeller ? If yes, maybe you could show them sometime.

+Daeron Barth im not sure since im no engineer, ill try and find out
Thank you !
I doubt you have a gearbox on the shaft from the main engine. Since this is a low-speed diesel engine, they are generally directly connected to the propeller but can have attachments like shaft motors and/or shaft generators.
How many MW Can be used on the Electrical Circuit Room? in this case on the second room.
Good tour--I'm guessing the engine room area is under the bridge/living area as every where else is containers!?
Depends on the ship design as the accommodation of the ship can be located away from the engine room. As you can see on Maersk Line's Triple-E ;-)
Do you recommend your job to other people because im intereates in pursuing a career as a deck officee but im hearing alot of negative things :/
Cool view of the engine room!
I still remember how hot the fuel purifier room was!!
I know you’re a mate, so I would recommend you get an engineer to proof your spelling. 😉
Ram
Thank you, great ER tour :)
Thank you for this video, this is awesome!
Can't wait to start my assistance soon.
+Nikola Rodic good luck!
Thanks broda
Hay Jeff, does your Chief Engineer hang around on the Bridge drinking coffee and BSing?
I ask, because that seems to be their favorite pass time on most of the ships I've been on
+Edward A YES LOL most CE do that hahah
That can is realy cool. Congrats. Goog job😀
Awesome videos! I love them all. If you ever come back on a sail to Charleston let me know. I live there and will be happy to give you a city tour!
+Christian Bischof i was there just two months ago! my last ship route went there regularly. Signed off already though... so next time! thanks for the offer, happy to sit down and have a coffee chat with my viewers ☺️☺️
JeffHK The offer of course also stands for future voyages. :-)
hey I am waiting for a new video pls make a video on food tour at sea I mean how does the cooks manage to cook variety of dishes and all!!!!!
Couldn’t help but notice that you don’t wear PPE e.g. helmet , gloves in most of your videos when on deck/ ER. Is the safety standard so lax on cargo ships?

maybe different ships or more advance ones.., some ships do have two engines
awesome video, Jeff! Thanks for sharing. I'd like to see a video that includes audio so that we can hear the inner workings of the ship.
+VeeDubTDI engine room would be pure noise from the engine haha
hi Jeff, love your vid. i am currently working on a tug boat in hk, interested in seagoing live. Can you make a vid shows how a sextant work and what brand are recommended, many thanks.
+anthony13315 sure thing, brand dont matter, most are no brand made in china
you are living in HK atm? i just signed off back in hk
yeah i am in HK XD. So if i want to get a sextant, should i get it from ebay or are there any local store in hk?
i like the way you do your videos,
also next time your down in the engine room can you show the data tag on the generator? just curious on who made it and the power output.
also i would not mind seeing something on the refer units.
That was really cool! Thanks
How does it work when with rough weather the turning propeller rises out of the water, does it go wild?.
+Pitt Brad propeller is pretty deep that even when rolling 30 degrees it will be submerged
Hello jeff i am vikrant from india i am studying DNS did u will make morning operation of the ship
+Vikrant Bagal not yet coming soon
Well done, fascinating
Great video..
do a 360 tour of the ships keel.
Love your videos keep it up!!!
+Señor Sequoia too low light might be tough
+Nils Hedstrom as long as you can pass the medicial exam
hey jeff, im thinking about training as a deck officer. my one question is what are the work rotations like. do you usually work like 3 months on 2 months off. or how does it work.? i would ideally like 2 months at sea/ or working and 2 months off. I understand its variable but how does it all work. Also love your videos. The best source of information out there if im honest.
6 months on 3 months off is standard in containerships, cruise line i heard 4 on 4 off
hey JeffHK when you are back at sea in the Mediterranean sea can you do more of that super time-lapse video like the one you did on the Suez canal and the stary night. thanks you and I'm hope you will be very successful in life. I'm also a big fan of your vlog. much love from the USA.
+Tong Cheng one coming up!
Thanks JEFFHK much love
really good video ...
Can you please guide me through the procedure for a mechanical engineer to get the necessary documents and lisence from AMSA? I'm currently pursuing my BE mechanical engineering in India. But I have an Australian PR and I am planning to come back to Australia. I couldn't get a clear idea from the internet.
Wow great detail my friend
Thanks president Xi
Your content is soooo goood. Love you man, no homo
thanks 4 the video
Thank you again for another enjoyable video stay safe and looking forward to more videos from you
Just watched this with VR goggles, just amazing! One small question, do you have “ship time” regardless of where you are? Or do you adjust to local time zones?
Yes, true to both your question. ship time adjust to local times
JeffHK Thanks! It was always a small dream when I was a kid to become a merchant sailor. Now I’m too old to start, but I still love boats and the sea. Thankyou for living my dream and sharing it with the world.
nice video!! ♥ Do you know how much horse power the main engine and the diesel generator's has??
Hi Jogamming
The engine is a
Burmeister Wain 12K98MC-C from MAN Diesel & Turbo. It is built by Doosan Engine. The name stands for 12 Cylinder and the diameter of piston 98 in cm.
MC-C stand for.
M for engine program C for Camshaft Controlled and last C for Compact Engine. It has generates 68.520 KW or 93.360 BHP
Runs with 94 rotations/minutes.It is built to run for 30 years 24-7 and is only down for maintenances. For the Generators I dont know?Kent
Thanks man for the informations!! My dad work on the containership ,,Cap San Juan". This is a really big ship of the company ,,Hamburg Süd"! Do you know this ship or company? The engine of this ship has more than 100.000 horse power!!
+Kent Ellekær Hansen thanks for the help!
Hello Jeff, first of all I got to say your videos are amazing in terms of quality and content. Since I'm just finishing high school and I'm thinking about working on a ship after college and I'd like to ask you a couple of questions..
First of all, after you do the cadet work, with a maritime nautical studies degree (5 years), where do you start from in terms of title, I've heard that you start from the 4th/3rd mate but I'd like to confirm it??
Secondly, is every ship ( like yours for example) equipped with enjoyable free time stuff/activities. I don't hear about this very often, and I'd like to know if your work time is 8 hours and are you free to do overtime as you like.
For the last question... in your experience- Is every crew as polite and welcoming as yours (or have you encountered rough people with no intention to help)
PS: If you have any tips for a beginner be sure to write 'em down :)
+Josip Barbir yes third mate
id say every ship will have recreational equipment, because even if there isnt any, we can always make our own
yes free to organise my own over time
just like in any other industry, you'll encounter rough, ruse co-workers. the good thing is that we only have short term contract and chances are never see them again
Are there more videos coming soon ?
Yea...when i stop procrastinating.. on my holiday =_=
