- Brendan Coyle, aka Mr Bates in Downton Abbbey, chats about his upcoming storylines in the fifth series of the hit period drama, including Bates and Anna dealing with the death of Mr Green, as well as his Scottish links.
I love Bates, he's the reason I started watching. How he struggled and Anna and him and all that crap
sarah bowles Yes indeed. First Bates struggled then Anna. Somehow they both got back to being with each other. It's the drama that makes us love Downton Abbey downstairs. Also, upstairs staff are just as great.

When scotland is mentioned...you suddenly hear his scottish accent..🙂😊! So lovely!
I was thinking that but from the start he has a Scottish tinge I don’t normally hear from him. I suspect it’s because the lady interviewing him is from close to where he says his mum is from and his accent is changing slight to meet hers. My uncle was brought up in Scotland but has lived in England for about 40 years. When he visits, his accent seems to change and he becomes more Scottish to fit who he’s speaking to. It might be the same for Brendan.
