How To Bend Plastic Glasses Frames

  • Here is how to bend plastic glasses frames. To reshape and bend plastic glasses frames, you need to get them warm. The easy way to do this is to soak them in a bowl of hot water. It doesn't have to be boiling hot. It should be cool enough that it doesn't burn your hands. After the glasses frames are warmed up, for 30 seconds or more in the hot water, slowly bend them to the shape you want. Keep putting the plastic glasses frames back in the hot water between bends so they stay hot. Keep on bending your glasses frames until you get them into the shape you want.

    I had to do the opposite. My glasses kept falling and i kept getting tension headaches (never get them). Totally worked. Kept at it until they didn't fall off my face. Took 1 hr because i was being extra careful since they are my only Rx glasses. I have one suggestion. Place glasses in the freezer/fridge for 2 min after molding them in hot water. This will make plastic hard so the now malleable frame wont re-configure as plastic cools

      Would pouring cold water after you mold it work the same

    • @partyfowlproductions
      @partyfowlproductions 2 роки тому +9

      I’d be worried that the expansion of the plastic from the heat to then being hit with really cold water causing instant contraction of the plastic might be too much stress on the arm and cause it to snap

  • @vloggerazzi

    Thank you very much!!
    This worked really well for my back up eyeglasses (TR90 material). They were backups because I never like how the arms felt too short. After adjusting them with this method, now I can wear them no issues.
    The pair of eyeglasses I just received in the mail today have the same problem (arms bend too soon) but it has a rubberized coating on the plastic. With some complaining their glasses are turning white, I think I will try the hair dryer method instead. If I can get them adjusted too, it'll be like having two new pairs of eyeglasses.

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  8 років тому

      +vloggerazzi You're welcome. I'm not sure if rubber turns white or not when you heat it. I've only ever tried this on plastic frames.

    I did this to my regular glasses. I've had them for about four years now, but I neglected them for personal reasons up until late last year. I found that they were incredibly tight and left deep marks by the root of my nose.
    After trying this method, but with slightly hotter water and for about three times as long, I found that bending them became rather easy. Definitely recommended!

    Just now received Ray Ban Liteforce RB4213 and unfortunately they are a
    bit wide to my face. They are made from high end durable and flexible
    plastic. I have tried heating them and bending, but even following all
    the procedures with hot water or hair drier, they will return to the
    previous shape. Is there any way I could bend the bridge to make them
    narrower or bend legs? Thank you.

    I've been a Licensed Optician for over 40 years now and though this would work if people want to adjust their own plastic frames, I think it would be easier if you use some sort of hot air like a hair dryer.

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  10 років тому +1

      I'm sure a hair dryer would work well. I would be afraid that people might accidentally overheat it and melt the plastic with a hair dryer, whereas hot water wouldn't be hot enough to melt the plastic, but would get it warm enough to bend.

    • @MrDoncope
      @MrDoncope 10 років тому

      It depends on what kind of plastic material. Some must be heated as high as 250 or it would just snap. Water boils at 212. I would say if they are in bad shape you've got nothing to lose, give it a try.

    I fixed my Ray-Ban Wayfarer RB2140 this way. Staighten the temples so it would fit better on the back of my ears. Perfect way to do it. Just bend it tiny bits at a time, repeat it a couple of times. Don't rush it, you might break your sunglasses.
    Also I just used a glass with hot water, you can just place the temple you want to bend in the glass. So you don't have to hold the sunglasses when it's warming up.

    I tried this with my $12 sunglasses. I couldn't change their shape using the hottest water that comes out of my tap, so I tried boiling it. Wearing work gloves I dropped the glasses in a pan of boiling water for 60 seconds, took them out with tongs, and reshaped one temple. Repeated for the other temple. Good result. Thanks for the pointer to the hot-water technique.

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  8 років тому

      You're welcome. I know that some plastic will melt or change color in boiling water, so starting out with warm water first is a good approach. If that doesn't work, then use progressively hotter water until it bends.
