- Matthew 19:9 & 5:32 explained.
Many Christians misinterpret these "exception clauses".
The Greek word "porneia" can refer to different types of sexual immorality. The exception in Matthew 19:9 & 5:32 is for sexually immoral marriages. Jesus was referring to incestuous marriages according to Leviticus 18:6-18.
This exception would also include same-sex marriage, remarriage (when a person's first spouse is still living), and adulterous marriage (being married to a divorced person while that person's first spouse is still living). These marriages are all considered sexually immoral (porneia), and they are unlawful according to the bible. In these cases divorce is allowed because remaining in these types of marriages is sinful. Remarriage would only be allowed if the person has never been in a lawful marriage.
The exception for divorce and remarriage does not include when a person's spouse has been unfaithful within a lawful marriage. Some bibles versions translate the word porneia to mean marital unfaithfulness, but this was not what Jesus was saying.
